A Staten Island doctor charged with peddling steroids to NYPD cops and bodybuilders walked out of court a free man Wednesday as his lawyer gloated over the no-jail deal.
"They wanted 30 years. They didn't get 30 minutes," Richard Lucente's lawyer, John Meringolo, boasted after his client was sentenced in Brooklyn Supreme Court.
Lucente, 38, was facing dozens of years in prison when he pleaded guilty in March to getting kickbacks from a Brooklyn pharmacy for feeding it patients, including a heart transplant patient who later died.
He was sentenced Wednesday to five years' probation and 200 hours of community service, and promised to give up practicing medicine for two years.
The sentencing marked the end of a wide-ranging, highly publicized steroid probe that ended with no one going to prison.
"I want to apologize to my friends, my family and my patients," Lucente said.
Lucente had admitted to one count of conspiracy for taking kickbacks from Lowen's Pharmacy in Bay Ridge, which also was charged in the case initially.
The charges against the pharmacy were dropped, but its owner, John Rossi, 56, committed suicide in 2007 during the investigation.
Staten Island bodybuilder Joseph Bagli, 40, who got steroids from Lucente despite having had a heart transplant, died of heart problems March 8, 2007.

If you strike me down(ban me)I'll become more powerful than ever.. Don't say i don't warn you.

John Rossi killed himself for nothing...
Joseph Bagli, 40 years old and already had a heart transplant, bound to kill himself no matter where he scored, the doctors advice and availability of pure meds may have kept him living a bit longer, for all we know he ended up needing a transplant from using questionable black market products....
During the Bush era this guy would've been in front of the Supreme court facing Treason charges the way they pursued roids back then....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
