I got 2 on reserve via email from my girlfriends brother. I walked in got mine...went out and stood in the waiting line playing with it for like 30 minutes waiting for her to drop off the other reservation ticket. Right as she pulled up by the curb I said screw waiting in line for 8 hours, grabbed the ticket waved it at the people waiting in line and went in to meet her while she parked the car. Why would you wait in that line for several hours when you could have reserved one via email and walked right in and bought it?spent like an hour total, 15 minutes each to purchase the 2 phones and the 30 minute wait for my gf to arrive...

I've been reading on it for a couple hours. The text is much crisper, like as clean as my LED LCD on my netbook. Can't wait to buy a Bluetooth keyboard and be able to type on my novel anytime without straining my finger and eyes or having to bust out my netbook and wait for it to boot....

Lot of problems with version 4, which I'm enjoying. Steve Jobs is so arrogant, I love that he fell flat on his face. It'll still sell like crazy, but it's already being said that while the software is top notch, the design is a failure. Apple's solution? Hold it differently.

I was a little hard on it... I'm sure its a good phone, but it's nice to see apple knocked off it's high horse once in a while![]()

Shit I consider that a plus, while in a conversation I want to get out of I can just wrap my hand around the antenna band...it does work a little bit, I just tried it on my phone dropped 2 bars. Though I did notice that I had full bars, usually out here at work in the big steel warehouse it has one or 2 bars missing on my old phone...

Android > Apple
The agrument used to be that the Apple phone such a wonderful peice of hardware, it was the best phone.
The counter argument was the best phone in the world is still useless if you can't get a connection because its locked into a crappy service.
Now with the new iPhone, you still have the same crappy service... and the hardware is just average, run of the mill compared to the new androids. And to top it off, if you hold it wrong, you loose bars? lol. FAIL!
I like a selection in my phones. I can get an Android with a keyboard or without. I can get it to film 720p and display it through an HDMI cable. I want to be able to change the battery or add and change out the SD card. The 5 mega-pixel camera is weak compared to the newer Androids.
I also don't want Steve approving every app that is available. If I want to get a porn app, dammit I should be allowed.

Being that we both get discounts on AT&T service through our companies, that we rarely use the video, never had a problem with our batteries, don't waste time on porn and have been using Iphones since they came out....My coworker has the Android, it didn't impress me much.....I also find being able to access my calendar or notes while talking on the phone to be the most valuable thing about having the Iphone...

i don't hold my phone like that so i guess it's a non issue. Why would you monkey palm the thing. weird.
Sometimes the truth can rape your entire belief system.

I've never seen anyone use their Iphone bare, as long as you have a case you don't touch the antenna and it doesn't fade out....
I have been having problems with it locking up at the end of calls, when I move it away from my head the screen doesn't come back up, when it finally does it is locked up and I give it a shake and it usually fixes it...but thats beta testing as the first buyer common in any product....

Apple should be providing cases to every iPhone 4 user. His majesty's recommendation to "hold it differently" or "buy a case" is horrendous.
A firmware fix is rumored to be coming to correct it. Maybe they can play with the firmware to make it less noticeable, but it's a design flaw.
Yeah, it's an expensive electronic why wouldn't someone put a cover on it. Plus you get to personalize it.
I still have an original and it works perfect, i am going to buy the 4 though. Probably in a couple months, hell they should give me a free one cause i've had this one since the day it came out.

I did watch the bars drop off last night as I laid in bed reading a book, I take it out of the case when I do that, but I didn't need them since I was reading. I don't give a shit though because the text is so clear it was like I was reading an actual book....

I'd love to get one too. Even with all those problems mentioned. How is your phone doing by the way? Is everything good?

It works great figured out the screen lockup prob was due to my old case blocking the sensors. I'm still just happy about the ease of reading on this thing.

This is what I just don't understand about die hard apple fans. They are willing to accept an incredibly expensive piece of equipment with a tremendously limiting flaw, just because it's by Apple?
People should be outraged, yet all over the web "buying a case" has become an acceptable workaround rather than demanding apple fixes it.

guess I'm not the only one who thinks so...

I am so in love with the retina display it could zap me every time I pick it up and I would still love it...but I had a case that fits this with room to put my little notepad and a quick snip of the top edge made it perfectly suitable....I also have 2 more cases, plus the 7 my gf has since she changes them to match her purse of the month, along with the 2 Iphone4 specific ones she just bought....if anyone is making money big time on these phones it's the case makers...if Apple does decide to give free ones it'll just be the cheesy edge band, I like my flip cover leather one that covers it completely....

Having an iPhone 3GS for a year now, I can honestly say it's the worst phone I've had since the 90s. It has a lot great features (like how I'm using it to make this post) but the actuall phone seems to be an afterthought. Also, I drop more calls in one week with AT&T than I did in one year with verizon.

Does the iPhone 4 Really Have a "Retina Display"? (Updated)
Jason Cross, PC World

Complete PCWorld Coverage
Dr. Raymond Soneira runs DisplayMate Technologies, which makes software to test display quality. He has a PhD in Theoretical Physics from Princeton University, and was a Long-Term Member of the Einstein Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. (Read Dr. Soneira's Bio.) He also knows more about digital displays than just about anyone I know - and I know some pretty tech-savvy folks. This morning, Dr. Soneira shot me an interesting email regarding the so-called "Retina Display" of the iPhone 4. To clarify: a retina display is one whose resolution meets or exceeds the maximum resolution the human retina is capable of resolving, assuming perfect vision.
This is a bit tricky, since the eye doesn't have "pixels" and the resolution required to match the human eye's capability depends on the distance from your eye to the display. If you sit four feet away from a 50" 1080p television, you'll see pixels. If you sit 100 feet away, you won't. The distance between any two visual elements is a matter of how many pixels per "arc degree" of vision it covers. Dr. Soniera's email, in full and unedited, is as follows.
...
The iPhone 4 has an outstanding display... and I'm glad that Apple resisted the emotional rush to OLEDs because they still need lots of improvement before they will be ready to compete with the highly refined IPS LCDs. The iPhone 4 display should be comparable to the outstanding IPS LCD in the Motorola Droid, which I tested and compared to the Nexus One OLED, which was trounced by the Droid.
Steve Jobs claimed that the iPhone 4 has a resolution higher than the retina - that's not right:
1. The resolution of the retina is in angular measure - it's 50 Cycles Per Degree. A cycle is a line pair, which is two pixels, so the angular resolution of the eye is 0.6 arc minutes per pixel.
2. So if you hold an iPhone at the typical 12 inches from your eyes, that works out to 477 pixels per inch. At 8 inches it's 716 ppi. You have to hold it out 18 inches before it falls to 318 ppi.
So the iPhone has significantly lower resolution than the retina. It actually needs a resolution significantly higher than the retina in order to deliver an image that appears perfect to the retina.
It's a great display, most likely the best mobile display in production (and I can't wait to test it) but this is another example of spec exaggeration.
...
So there you have it - some math from a display expert showing that, while the iPhone 4's display is certainly exciting and probably represents a step forward for smartphones, it may fall short of Apple's claims of meeting or exceeding the resolution of the human retina.
Update 06/11/10: Dr. Soneira sent us some additional information, clarifying some of the misconceptions flowing around in comments and on other sites. He wishes to stress that his comments do not mean that he thinks the iPhone 4 display (or the phone itself) is bad. On the contrary, he thinks the display seems like a significant step forward. Dr. Soneira's comments are only regarding the claim Steve Jobs made of 300 pixels per inch being all that the retina can distinguish at a distance of "10 to 12 inches." Dr. Soneira's update is as follows
...
The iPhone 4 is actually very far from a retina display. It's a substantial discrepancy and not even close: At 12 inches the 1 dimensional linear difference is 326/477 = 68 percent. But the pixel (area) density for two dimensions, which is the actual relevant observable, is that value squared = 0.47, so the iPhone 4 is more than a factor of two from being a retina display at the typical 12 inch viewing distance. Stated another way: The iPhone display would need to have 1.3 megapixels instead of 0.6 megapixels to be a retina display.
There have been some comments that my analysis is for perfect vision. Jobs' statement is for the *retina* not the *eye* with a poor lens. If you allow poor vision to enter into the specs then any display becomes a retina display. That turns it into a meaningless concept that will be exploited by everyone. The iPhone 3GS is a retina display too for good percentage of the population.
Specs need to be objective, precise and accurate. Allowing puffery and exaggerations in the sales and marketing starts a snowballing effect that eventually leads to the 1000% rampant spec abuse that I document for many other displays.
Retina Display... lol
Jobs is such an ass. Making ridiculous claims like that. Sure it has great resolution but calling it a retina display is just bullshit
Though I don't like Steve Jobs at all, I don't blame him for that: he's trying to sell something. The real asses are the minions who blindly fork over all their money because Jobs says it's "magical".
Apple products are kind of Obama-esque. Most who love them can't tell you why, they just do.Not to say apple doesn't make good stuff, but the love fest is undeserved.
