    Cover Band Question

I'm in the process of putting together a cover band with the obvious goal of playing gigs out at local bars in the near future. I don't expect us to play anywhere really big and popular in my area, but I also don't want to be relegated to playing at dive bars in front of 5 drunk 50 year old guys.

My question involves our music selections. We're having a pretty big debate about what direction we want to go in. We all love rock and the so called pop rock, and we like the current stuff more than the old stuff. So bands like Creed, Metallica, godsmack, Nickelback, Three Doors Down, Three Days Grace, STP, Breaking Benjamin, you get the point. Our dilemma is, do we play these types of songs for our set list, or do we go with the "jukebox" method, where we choose songs that are classics, and ultimately the super popular songs that people all know and can dance to?

Would you guys go to see an all "rock" cover band, or would you need there to be the usual songs in there to keep your interest? I really don't want to have to play Bryan Adams, and Brown Eyed Girl, and Sweet Caroline, but of course if that's what the people want, I guess we'll have to adapt.

But can we have some small success playing all basically current rock songs with some popular 90s stuff like Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains thrown in?

construct 3 or 4 set lists

group set lists based on the tunings / set ups of the songs / kind of song

gage your audience when you play songs to see if you are good

^ yup, I have a friend whos in a cover band. Stick with the populars first, and go by the crowd. After they are in the "mood' and diggin ya, then you can stumble off the path a little, to lesser known songs, that still sound just as good if not better.

My buddy and his band play similar songs as yours and at their last gig they played some of The Cult's greatest hits. After finding out that the crowd really liked them they played some lesser known songs, as well as a few from Southern Death Cult, which I think i was the only one there that heard of them before lol.

    Crowd still loved it.

If you wanna get laid you gotta play some of the lamest shit that drunk bar whores love to yell "Oh my gawd that's mah song!!!!" Like the Toadies barn song or Dave Matthews, Third Eye Blind, STP Vaseline, Nickleback or Ever Clear...I remember my friend used to sing those and the chicks would fall in love with him...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
