Woman Dies After Silicone Injections to Buttocks

(July 31) -- Striving for the perfect body may have cost one woman in California her life.

Mayra Lissette Contreras, 22, died after receiving injections of silicone to the buttocks, CBS reports. Autopsy results are still pending, but she is thought to have died from respiratory problems after the operation.

"Stories like this are all too common," cosmetic surgeon Michael Kane told CBS. "I don't know any licensed professional who would inject large amounts of silicone into the body."

When silicone is used for breast implants, it is medical-grade and placed in the body in a capsule.

Underground cosmetic surgeons are not always so careful, using industrial silicone and injecting large quantities of the substance, rather than implanting it.

Silicone injected into the body can have serious medical consequences. These range from heavy scarring to death from breathing problems – as appears to be what happened in Contreras's case.

"It's easy for an injector to hit a vein, the silicon hits the bloodstream and goes to the lungs," Colin Stewart, a columnist for The Orange County Register, told CNN.

Police are now hunting for the two sisters, Alejandra Viveros and Guadalupe Viveros, who are believed to have performed the operation.

The two women were taken into custody on June 21 for practicing medicine without a license, according to The Los Angeles Times. Authorities held the sisters on bail of $20,000, then released them.

The women have gone on the run and may have fled to Mexico.

but there immigration status is part of there stupidity as they probably did not attend basic american school, not to mention immigrants are crook's they already broke the law coming here, no surprise they will break it again espically if they didnt get in trouble for breaking it the first time

There was something like this going on in NJ a few months back. Someone was pumping caulk into women's butts for about $2000. They complained when they began getting ill... I don't blame the guy for making a quick buck. I blame the women who thought that getting bathroom caulk in their backsides in a hotel room was a good idea.

It would be interesting to know what sort of income bracket they are in. Was it somebody with money to burn trying to be cheap or someone without a pot to piss in looking for a quick vanity fix?

My guess is dirt poor. Many of the women in music videos get it done now, so they are just trying to follow in their footsteps. This reminds me of these two women at my job that have some "Jolie lips" they got from a surgeon. They both look like they have chewed-up gum for lips. Angelina's lips always looked dry and chapped to me anyways... I have no idea why women want them.

My guess is a woman on the fringe of lower middle class, just dangling by a thread of credit over poverty from chasing all the latest fashion trends to the point of trying to pass off VL labeled chinese bags as Louis Vuitton, wearing bug eye sun-glasses,. capturing bees in the yard to sting her lips, tattooed makeup yet has a purse filled with high-glass empties of designer cosmetics to look the part....one of those types I'm guessing/.///
