South African reserve’s last rhino butchered for her horn
South African reserve
Poachers have butchered the last adult rhinoceros at a South African game reserve, cutting off her horn and letting her bleed to death, the chief game ranger says.
“We’ve had rhinos here for 20 years,” Japie Mostert told the Star on Thursday from the Krugersdorp Game Reserve, 60 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg. “She was the last one.”
The nine-year-old rhino at the 1,400-hectare reserve was likely attacked by poachers who hovered in a helicopter, shot her with a tranquillizer dart then leapt out and sliced her horn off with a chainsaw, Mostert said.
“The whole operation would take seven to 10 minutes.”
he animal’s female calf had been killed by poachers in January; her nine-month-old male calf was taken to a different reserve for sanctuary after the killing on July 14, he said.
It would take “a guard working day and night” to protect the rhinoceroses, which are being slaughtered at a record rate across South Africa, he said.
Rhino horn has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine, although tests reported by National Geographic have shown that it has no special properties and is similar to a fingernail.
More than 90 rhinos have been killed in South Africa this year, compared with 122 in all of 2009, said David Mabunda, chief executive officer for the South Africa National Parks. Only 13 rhinos were poached in 2007.
Ninety per cent of the world’s rhinos have been slaughtered in the last 40 years to feed the illegal horn trade in China and Vietnam.
Poachers can get more per ounce for rhino horns than for gold.

China is a plague, not only does their black magic medicine market keep poaching alive, not only are they communists, not only are they flooding the world with poorly made products, not only are they the worlds largest polluters, but they are also the number one over-populaters.....they really need to get a boot in the ass a nice long boot so they straighten up and fly right.....

This kind of thing just makes me sick. Anything for a buck, I guess.
Why just tranquilize the poor animal and let it suffer ? i imagine it's still semi-conscious during the butchering.
why not kill it first.

I wonder what we could do to any poacher caught doing this to any other Rhino...bet they use that for an aphrodisiac in China as well!

It shouldn't by now, but I am still amazed at some of the things people will do for money.
I have said it before, and I will say it again: If you were to remove currency and religion from the would, you would likely end up with a near perfect world.

More per ounce than gold. What people won't do for money. No excuse, of course, but it's South Africa. They make about $3K per year.
Gross National Income (per capita) by country. Definition, graph and map.
Gold sells for about $1200 per ounce.
GoldMoney Gold Bullion
So they take seven to ten minutes of their day, chainsaw off an animal's horn, and "earn" $115,200US and the rhino horn actually brings more per ounce than gold.
A rhino horn weighs about 6 lbs. or 96 ounces. (96 ounces X $1200 = $115200)
White Rhinoceros
That's three thousand in an entire year versus $115K in ten minutes.
Note: I'm absolutely not condoning poaching, however the economics are obvious.

i see.

^People are [expletive deleted] idiots. All tigers will be extinct before we know it, rhinos, what else? Everything but cockroaches.
Would the Chinese start passing the word that cockroaches work as an aphrodisiac in a pinch?
Edit: Was that racist? I only used "Chinese" as I read somewhere that they have been known to use ground up tiger penis as an aphrodisiac.

I am pretty sad now.

killing the poachers needs to be profitable as well. a sizeable bounty on anyone dealing in the horn might be a solution. this rhino never should have been accessible or her horn should have been safely removed and destroyed.

^Who's going to pay $1200 per ounce for a poacher?
Of course, I believe China also has a strong black market for human organs...
Perhaps something could be arranged.

Looks like Japan was also in on the dealings (2006)...

Turning Poachers into Conservationists in Rwanda - Intelligent Travel Blog
In Rwanda, conservationists have discovered that you can't protect species like mountain gorillas without also looking after the people who live around their habitat. And in the area around the gorillas' home, Volcanoes National Park, where there are nearly 600 people per square kilometer, the potential for human-wildlife conflict is particularly great. I learned about challenges and some of the possible solutions from former Volcanoes National Park Tourism Warden, Edwin Sabuhoro, whom I met while traveling in Rwanda. As it turns out, cultural tourism is a big part of the answer.
In 2004, Sabuhoro rescued a baby mountain gorilla from poachers who had killed several adult gorillas and where attempting to sell the baby on the black market. The baby survived but the two young poachers received life sentences in prison for their crime. After their conviction, Sabuhoro visited with the poachers' parents to find out why they did it. One of the boy's father said "If you were starving and couldn't feed your family, wouldn't you do something desperate to survive?"
Sabuhoro did further investigation into the lives of the nearly 500,000 poverty-stricken people who live around the park and found that the residents suffered as a result of their proximity to it--animals like Cape buffalo and elephants ate their crops and trampled their dwellings, and access to fresh water, firewood, and other resources was limited because it was illegal to harvest them from the park. The locals resented the park, and saw little reason to conserve it, so wildlife poaching and illegal harvesting of trees and other plants was rife.
"I realized that if people's basic needs were not being met--if they couldn't feed their families or pay for health care and school fees--the mountain gorillas and the park would disappear," says Edwin. In 2006, Sabuhoro decided he would help address these needs by opening a tour company, Rwanda Eco-Tours, which would share its profits with the locals so that communities could fund agricultural projects and other initiatives that would allow them to improve their lives. He also decided to open Iby'iwacu Cultural Village, an educational tourist attraction that would employ former poachers as cultural interpreters and performers of traditional Rwandan dance and music.

South Africa vows to fight rhino poachers to "last man standing" - NatGeo News Watch
Poison rhino horns?
The spate of rhino killings in South Africa has people so upset that there is talk in the country's media of treating the horns on live rhinos with a poison that would kill anyone who consumed medicinal products made from poached horns.
"Ed Hern, owner of the Rhino and Lion Park near Krugersdorp, west of Johannesburg, believes poisoning the horns of rhinos will result in consumers of the product falling ill or dying and knock the demand for this illegal product hard," the Times reports on its website.
"We need to try poisoning the horns with something like cyanide so when someone uses it for medicine they will die. I have started testing with a vet," Hern told the newspaper.
