Schwarzenegger: lets gays and lesbians marry now
    Jill Tucker, Chronicle Staff Writer
San Francisco Chronicle August 6, 2010

(08-06) 17:04 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called today for the immediate restoration of same-sex marriage in California, urging the federal judge who overturned Proposition 8 to impose his ruling while the case moves through the higher courts.

Allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry "is consistent with California's long history of treating all people and their relationships with equal dignity and respect," said a legal brief written on behalf of Schwarzenegger.

Schwarzenegger was a named defendant in a lawsuit brought by two same-sex couples and the city of San Francisco that prompted a nonjury federal trial on Proposition 8. However, he remained neutral during the trial.

Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled Wednesday that the November 2008 ballot measure, defining marriage as between a man and a woman, is unconstitutional because it discriminates on the basis of sexual orientation.

Attorney General Jerry Brown, who is running for governor, also filed arguments Friday against extending a stay of Walker's ruling. Referring to the ban on same-sex marriage, Brown's filing stated that "the public interest weighs against its continued enforcement."

Supporters of Prop. 8 have asked for Walker to stay his ruling while it is appealed to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Written arguments relating to a possible stay were due today, though a hearing has not been scheduled and Walker has not said when he will make a decision.

    Schwarzenegger = Another "conservative" RINO.

I'm not religious, but marriage was created by the church and therefore should be regulated by the church. When the gov't takes it over they then give a bunch of sick faggots a right that should be decided by the church.

I think that the church is worried that if gays are allowed to marry, all of the young gay men will feel social acceptance in there gay life, find loving relationships and have a happy life. instead of repressing their gay feelings, becoming priests, and eventually molesting young alter boys...

what would the church be without child molesting predatory priests??

Yeah, but many of the benefits of marriage are regulated by the government. I'm not familiar with all or nearly any of them, but things like your wife or husband being in the hospital and if you're the same sex then your "marriage" or relationship isn't recognized and you have to sit in the parking lot.

Okay, I probably have that wrong.

But it's definitely not as you describe.

Exactly. I remind him that he vowed to me, my country and to God that he'd do these things.

Actually, we were so shell-shocked during the ceremony we don't remember our vows.
So we just make up random shit:
"But you PROMISED to let me flirt with hot-looking men on bodybuilding boards; it was in our vows..."

People in tribes who have never been touched by the "church" got/get married, cultures all over the world not influenced by the "church" have their own rituals and ceremonies, even the pagans had their own marriages.....so just because they may not be in a cathedral with a tux and a bridal gown and a balding man holding the Holy Bible people still get MARRIED all the time, you know some have Elvis read the vows and some others just sign a paper in the courthouse and never even *gasp* have a Wedding Ceremony omg blasphemy...

And here's another shocker; just because gays can't sign the paper they still have ceremonies, some of them do it in churches with preachers who are being true to "love thy neighbor" even if he may love you in a different way....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

manicilon is right, marriage has for the most part been an economic contract, religious tones may or may not be interjected. Now that marriage has evolved to mean "love" why not give it to the homosexuals as well as heterosexuals?

the concept of marriage has been around a lot longer than any organized religion and especially Christianity which is relatively new at less than 2010 years old.

the concept of marriage started even before ancient Egypt when most societies developed a concept for the perpetuation of the species,a system of rules to handle the granting of property rights, and the protection of bloodlines.

Marriage ceremonies were held in Ancient Greece centuries before even the birth of Jesus Christ.

This being the case there is no direct correlation between marriage and Christianity, the concept has been around a lot longer than any organized mainstream religion followed today.

Then there shouldn't be a marriage license or any legal implications of getting married.

If the government is going to stay out of marriage and let the church decide, then they should stay out of the whole thing and just let it be a marriage ceremony... As it is being married has a ton of legal implications both good and bad. Without marriage being allowed for gays they are not able to take the same legal path that a straight couple would.

They should make marriages a church issue and keep the government and law out of it.. and then make a legal "union" that is available to both straight and gay people. That way the religious and legal issues are separate.

If you are in a car accident and wind up in a wheel chair, they are going to have to financially look after you whether they decide to leave you or not.

But this could go the other way too...

If your company doesn't offer health insurance or you are unemployed, you can get it through your spouse.

You can gain citizenship to a different country based on marriage.

If you end up in jail, you could get visitation that is only allowed by immediate family.

Some areas are zoned for families only. If you want to live there you have to be married.
