I was just watching that special on the attacks with Rudy Giuliani and the video is still so hard to watch. They were showing people jumping from the top floors. I can't believe it's been 9 years already.
What were you doing when the attacks happened? I was at home, off from the Air National Guard. Then I was activated 16 days later.

I was a young teacher, and I arrived at school with no knowledge of what was going on. One of the other teachers told me about it, and we started watching the news reports. I basically canceled all my classes and we watched the events unfold together. The students had a lot of questions, and we just discussed what was going on all day. Some kids became very emotional, and some remained relatively unaffected, at least outwardly. Mostly I just remember a strange feeling of closeness because of the shared experience of us all sitting in class and bantering about thoughts and feelings about the events unfolding before us on the TV screen. Seemed like the only reasonable thing to do, under the circumstances.
I was in middle school watching the TV...

I was in Indonesia, the worlds biggest muslim nation and Anset Airlines (who I flew over with) went broke while I was there and I became stranded. Rumour was at the time was that Bin Laden was seeking refuge in Indonesia somewhere.
I had a good muslim friend who I knew that I could count on and he was watching people jumping out of windows and those buildings going down on the big screen in a bar with a stone cold face. Teary eyed I asked him "Do you realise that muslims were behind all this? How does that make you feel considering that you are a muslim?
He just glared at me and told me he felt as though his football team had just won,I had no time for him after that.
The following year I left two days early which saved me from being blown up in Bali as I was at that bar at that time every night.
i was in drug rehab all fucking wacked out i thought i was dreaming how could the gov not stop the 2nd plane after the first 1 hit there should have been fighter jets up there as soon as the first one happened![]()

well, i was working in manhattan that morning, and I'll never forget when my boss came into my office and goes, "hey look at this a plane crashed into the twin towers". of course, at the time we didn't know exactly what happened, we assumed it was a small plane and an accident. but I will never forget looking out the window and seeing the smoke plume and all. Then after we found out what was happening, I remember there were just tons of people just standing in the middle of 5th avenue just watching and talking, and then the sounds of people screaming as we turned around to see the first building fall down. Then the second....ugh, what a day. We all packed up our bags in the office and started to head home, me and my boss lived in long island so we started walking over the 59th st bridge and we figured once we got into queens we would figure out the rest. finally got on a subway to go to jamaica station and then the long island rail road to get home. When the train pulled out of the station, you could just look back and see the smoke still, oh man what an image. I'll never forget walking home from the train station either....everyone on the main highway next to the train tracks was just stopped dead in their cars and they all were asking us (who came off the trains) what it was like.
my ex girlfriend's mom at the time worked in a building practically right next door to the towers. If you notice on videos, it's the building with the staggered, slanty roofline. She had it worse than me for sure, she saw some of those poor people who jumped out....
perhaps my most lasting images from the whole thing was two days later when we came back to work and I was walking to my office and I saw a NYFD engine covered in dust from the towers, and people used their fingers to write little messages all over the truck, praising the heroes and stuff like that....very moving. then of course in penn station there were the bulletin boards set up with pictures of people who were lost that day or missing. you want to talk about heart and gut wrenching at the same time....
so, RIP to all those lost that day and to their families, maybe someday they will be able to have some semblance of a normal life again, but probably not....

I was working at the time. I was in NJ and some of my co workers were wondering how many of their family members had been killed. Luckily, I am one of the very few people I know from this area that lost no one I knew personally that day. I went home and there was light gray soot like substance on my windows(3rd floor). I was about 14 miles away from the Trade center and could see the layers of smoke. I didn`t have cable tv at the time. I only had one channel that was broadcasting out of Secaucus, NJ. Every other station had their transmitter on top of one of the Trade Center buildings. The other stations began showing up on my tv about 3 weeks later. I still feel ill whenever I see photos or video and even as I type this.
I had just walked into the gym, got on the treadmill looked up at the TV's about 30 seconds before the second plane hit.
Even though out here in Cali we didn't see it directly there was a strange feeling the whole day and a couple days after as well.

I was at work. Just saw what was going on on the internets. They let out early around noon. I went and got some lunch, then met up with a friend in the parking lot and decided to hit the strip club.

I was in the airport waiting to go to Greece.![]()

I'd been up late working on a Psych paper, took something to make me fall asleep around 6am had just nodded off with the TV on when I woke up feeling weird and a news break was just starting showing a the initial plane crash...I thought I was dreaming, so I laid there in a half wakened state until the second plane crashed that's when I sat up and thought "Oh shit the machines have taken over, planes are going to start dropping from the sky!!!" Then shortly thereafter I heard the fighter jets outside and I ran out to see if maybe they were chasing something to shoot it down.... I thought something a lot bigger was going down, I imagined shit was going to happen coast to coast, water plants were going to be poisoned, biological agents would be released.... Especially after the one went down in Penn. and the one hit the Pentagon....I was actually somewhat relieved when things stopped getting bombed by commercial airliners.....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
