Got laid off, and my 26 weeks ends one week AFTER the deadline to get an extension on Nov 30th. Can't get a teaching job in this area, and I'm not moving. Probably end up teaching at the prison, or some shit. Buddy of mine drives for UPS, and makes 80 grand a year. They work hard, but he loves it. Looking better all the time. Gonna have to make a decision by the end of the year, unless congress decides to allow for federal extensions. Some people in Cali got 99 weeks, and I get 26. What are you gonna do?

UPS drivers sometimes spend years as box throwers awaiting their chance, they usually hire from within, and yeah they are somewhat taken care of (they used to start at $25 an hour here like 10 years ago). I believe they are much better off than FedEx peeps.

Unemployment is only nirvana for those that don't aspire to much, although its a good time to brush up on certifications for IT folks. Otherwise, personally, I don't enjoy being out of work for a long time - doesn't feel right.

I agree. I've been working steady since grad school. Frustrating thing for me is that in California it is almost impossible to get hired in education if you have years of experience along with an advanced degree, because it costs the district too much money. I'd rather work for less money, but the union won't allow it. I'm getting sick of chasing my tail trying to find work in Teaching. At this point, I just want a job. Being out of work does feel weird.

if you're truly thinking of leaving, then make sure that you've searched out and have alternative money gain or another job. I mean if you're in a position of not having to work to pay your bills then, before you do something that might land you in court or other bad situations, leave the site, but if you've much in the means of overhead, then search out alternative jobs or means for those bills.

sorry to hear that, it is tough in the field of jobs with those types that make a daily habit of getting into other people's hair, so to speak.

Hey MDR. I was laid off 10 weeks ago. Yes, that fucking sucks. In NJ some got 99 weeks also.... and there is a move for a Tier 5, but that is only going to help the people that already got 99 weeks! No one cares about the recently unemployed and only get 26 weeks. I certainly don't want to be a "99er", but getting a job right now is very difficult, especially since I am turning 55 in December. I had 4 interviews, they like my resume and seem excited after speaking to me on the phone. But then after the interview they say something like "we will be making a decision in the next few weeks". I swear my age turns them off. They say you are at a big diadvantage if you are over 40. 40!? I would love to be 40 again! Some sort of extension would be nice, but it isn't likely. To make matters worse, I am at high risk for prostate cancer (long story), so I can't let my health insurance lapse. My COBRA is $503 a month!

Yep-my cobra is over 500, I'm over 40, and there are no teaching jobs in California. I don't want to be unemployed, either, but it is pretty bad out there right now.

Yeah, but I lived in a right to work state before I moved here (Arizona), and I didn't make shit, so I can't complain too much about the teacher's union. I'm looking for federal jobs now. Teaching in the federal prison system has a pretty high turnover rate. Can't imagine why. Gotta find something in the next two months, or I'm gonna be selling cars or life insurance, or some such shit.

Yep, three years ago it seemed like a great idea. Then the economy went into the toilet, and they cut 10,000 teaching jobs in California. Fun times. Damn baby boomers need to retire. Of course, none of them are retiring now because of the economy. Talk about a catch-22.

Many states all over the country are cutting back on hiring and laying off teachers. I am seeing more and more people with education teaching certificates (licenses) from the US in Asia, because they can't find a teaching job.

4 of my relatives (cousins and in-laws) have been unemployed for a year.

They used to be solid middle class and upper middle class.

    Tough times for many.

No doubt there. At least I've been fortunate enough to be employed steadily over the last 10 years, since I got out of school. Folks with no savings at all are really in a spot. Lotta people hurting out there these days.

I understand the money is pretty good in Japan. Friend from grad school paid off his student loans by going over there after graduation. Plus, the kids actually want to learn, for the most part.

the culture is totally different in Japan...there you are an embarrassment to the family if you are stupid and fat, here in the US it's encouraged and your "right".

in the US Asians usually make up one of the smallest groups in most demographics yet they obtain the majority of the advanced degrees, etc...being a "smart" student in Japan is really just average while here in the US smart or extremely intelligent people/students are typically ostracized in schools and considered "weird"...
