Angry CA court oks tuition breaks for illegal immigrants

Why don't we just to the inevitable and that's get rid of California....they have no money for their own and now we have to take care of another countries problem.
    Send Mexico the bill dammit.
New York ain't too far behind.

Illegal immigrants in California can continue to receive the same in-state tuition breaks that other students get to attend public colleges, the California Supreme Court ruled unanimously on Monday.

Students who spend at least three years in California high schools are eligible for the tuition breaks, the Los Angeles Times reports - a decision cheered by the state's estimated 25,000 illegal immigrants.

"[The ruling] appropriately expands access and educational opportunities to all legitimate California high school graduates," the lawyer for the California state university system said in a statement posted on CNN.

"[California's public university system] continues to advocate that racially and ethnically inclusive college universities better prepare students for the diverse workplace of the future."

The ruling reversed a decision by the state Court of Appeals that students who have illegal immigration status should pay out-of state costs.

That gives these students - who are unable to apply for federal education grants or loans - a break of more than $22,000 at a school like UCLA.

The lawsuit challenged a 2002 law allowing students "without lawful immigration status" to get the tuition break if they "filed an application to legalize his or her immigration status," according to CNN.

California continues to be one of several states - including Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, New Mexico, Texas and New York - to allow illegal immigrants to receive tuition benefits if they have spent enough time in the state's high schools.

The law also applies to California high school students living in the country legally, who are technically residents of other states - i.e. students from Massachusetts who graduate from boarding school in California.

Meanwhile, retiring Florida Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, a Republican, is seeking to pass legislation giving states the option to allow illegal immigrant students to pay in-state tuition.

"Allowing undocumented students to attend primary and secondary schools but requiring that they pay out-of-state tuition for college creates an unfair financial burden," Diaz-Balart told the Associated Press.

The California decision came the same day that President Obama met with Democratic lawmakers to speak about the Dream Act - the proposed law that would give young illegal immigrants a path to citizenship if they attend college for two years or join the military, according to Politico.

The senate blocked the DREAM Act at the same time it blocked "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in September.

Politico reported the legislation could be back on the House floor this week.

Man, I just have to say, this shit just gets more comical everyday. I mean, if weren't so tragic.

These politicians keep saying how much they despise illegals, and how we need to build a berlin style wall to keep them out. Meanwhile, BillyBob and billyjoe form a milita to try and apprehend them.

    Then this crap!

That wall isn't to keep them out, it's to keep them in!

considering that they spent almost a 1/2 billion dollars on a school for low performing students, this is no surprise.

3000 teachers laid off.....even though it's a separate budget it still makes no sense.

My old roommate teaches 7th grade math at a Jr High. (Here in Southern California). 98% of the junior highers at his school are ESL (English as a second language) students. This is a school in L.A. County, but miles away from central L.A., where the illegal alien problem is the most rampant.
California politics is BS. Northern California are the "tolerant" people with their santuary cities where illegals can "safely" live, yet Northern California wants to separate as a state from Southern California because we're too much of a financial drain (which is true, but hello, your own politics is one of the premier reasons why). Water is another reason they want to separate, but primarily, its financial and that's because we have people taking from the pot who arent pitching in and now we've increased how much they can take from the pot when our pot is already empty.

We're a sham of a state, I completely agree and it won't improve with the election of our new Governor who is uber pro amnesty & pro illegal alien and the failure to replace our Senator, who is also pro amnesty & pro illegal alien.

The Mexican Cartels own our borders. During Bush, we had two border patrol men put in prison for 10 years for shooting at a Mexican cartel member running back across the border (shot him in he butt, not even a fatal wound). The two border patrol men were eventually pardoned due to public outcry after a few YEARS in prison when Bush left office, but what kind of message does that send to the border patrol? Effectively do your job and risk going to prison.

California is a sham, our Federal stance and enforcement on this issue is a sham.

Yeah, out of state? Fuck you! Pay more! Out of country? Come on in and enjoy in state tuition! ...and tuition keeps going up and programs keep being impacted, and students keep complaining. Something wrong with this picture. At Cal State Universities, out of state tuition is about $10,000 higher. It would be interesting to see if that difference times as many students as it would apply to would help save tuition increases and lost jobs.

On a side note, Cali still has the some of the lowest in state tuitions.

tuition goes up but wages stay the same. apparently the new economic game in town/US is basically bilk the American tax payer for as much money possible in as many ways while they get nothing in return.

Look at Calexico/Mexicali....because of the Silicon Border people on the Mexico side are doing better than people on the Cali side.

Yep-and a college degree is worth less than ever. I don't understand how you get a tuition break for residency when you aren't even a resident.

I do agree. But tuition increases in California are the least of our worries in that department as Cali tuitions are the lowest around. Like I said:

At Cal State Universities alone, out of state tuition is about $10,000 higher than in state tuition. It would be interesting to see if that difference times as many students as it would apply to (if illegals were at least paying out of state rates since they're allowed to attend anyway) would help save tuition increases.

Because they were allowed to attend California public schools for high school (and elementary/middle schools too). They were let into the system early enough and when they wanted to attend Unis at in state costs, but weren't allowed, they filed suit and won.

We set the precedent by allowing illegals to attend our public schools for primary/secondary education. Now we owe it to them to let them pay in state tuition at our universities. They are entitled damnit! Someone else will have to pick up the tab for the extra costs. Think of those poor people who otherwise wouldn't have any opportunity to get an education. Hell, they should be able to go for free for being oppressed by America for generations.

entitlements for the rich are what's bankrupting this country...losses in big business are socialized while the gains are privatized. kills me that people want to reduce SS benefits and increase the retirement age basically so the average American taxpayer can work longer to subsidize the wealthy.

CA is doing the right thing. Someone has to make up for the racist law in AZ. How horrible would we look if immigrants are coming over here and not even given access to a college education? CA used to be part of Mexico anyway before the founding war mongers stole it from them. This is the least we can do to make up for all of our crimes against humanity. If CA taxpayers don't pay for it, who will? At least they're willing to step up to the plate for immigrants.

big difference between immigrants and illegal immigrants. Immigrants pay taxes, illegals don't yet they live off of the people who do pay taxes.

Also, AZ law isn't racist, SP1070 was just a reinforcing decree, saying AZ will in fact execute pre-existing federal law from now on. There are a lot of "racist" federal laws on illegal immigration, we just don't enforce it, which is why we have such an "issue."

It's bad enough that we exploit them, making them work long hours for slave wages. Now, we're supposed to tell them they can clean our house and cut our grass, but they can't go to college? Sure, that's a great deal for us. In the meantime, we encourage our kids to flaunt our imperialist flag on their bicycles to remind them they are outsides.
