    New PC Build & CrossFireX

So after 10 years my cheap ass is finally building a new PC and retiring my Asus system running Win 2K Pro. I'm going AMD Ath II to take advantage of the 64-bit processing to max out RAM on Win 7. The only thing I don't really know about is the Crossfire support for 3D, etc. I seriously haven't done any PC gaming since Half Life 2 came out. But I haven't been able to find any monitors that even support the same resolutions as the 3D graphics cards, so what gives?

Dude. Buy a laptop. There is NOTHING like it. Before I got my laptop I built every PC I have ever owned but I really dig this. Esp. if you can get wifi or some kind of wireless. It's so relaxing just to sit on the couch and watch the television and type what you want when you want. Building a PC was cool when it was more economical, but you can get a laptop cheat these days. That is just my recomendation...

I have a bunch of laptops and netbooks for work, I need a desktop for my business (file server, record storage, etc.) but it needs to be dual-purpose. I just want to make sure I get the right video chipsets to support future video demands, etc.

    WTF?

Small shitty screens, no room for high power video cards, limited expansion space for high performance I/O devices, and outrageously expensive replacement parts for when things breaks.

I would never recommend a laptop for entertainment purposes.

Anywho, I recently built my first enthusiast build. I have found that both crossfire and SLI is over-rated, and in many situations net you less performance than a single video-card. If you are asking about crossfire, I assume you want high FPS for games. Most games have serious driver issues with both crossfire and SLI setups. That has been my experience so far. I had two EVGA GeForce GTX 470s, and took the second one out and sold it to a friend for a loss just because the SLI was causing a shit ton of issues with games like Fallout New Vegas. Nvidia is bad about testing their drivers before releasing them.

Also, I would splurge on the mobo if I were you. You'll get more performance increase out of a high quality mobo with lots of OC settings. I bought an EVGA mobo and love it. Mine is fucking nasty. I have my 930 Bloomfield quad-core overclocked to 4.0 Ghz, and it hasn't ran over 80 degrees celsius even during a prime 95 torture test.

Also, EVGA boards have fantastic raid controllers built into the board. I have 3 intel X-25 SSDs in a raid 0. Crystal Mark showed my sequential reads and writes were hovering around 600Mb/s.

Say what you want but it works great for me. For one I can sit on my recliner and not have to worry about sitting at my uncomfortable computer station that I used to sit at. The screen size works just fine for me as well. It don't need to be much bigger than it is considering it's sitting on my lap most of the time I'm using it. The only part that seems to be that expensive to replace is the touch pad that I never use because I have an external mouse. Not to mention they are dirt cheap now compared to what they used to be. For me it works out perfect, and I don't see myself buying another PC again. Not to mention I can pick up free internet where I live, so it's basically paid for itself, but to each their own.

I can see the point when it comes to gaming, which I never do though.

I don't get why that's even so funny. It would probably be funny if I said how smart I was, which I did not.

The man is talking about crossfire, and your suggesting laptops. He reiterates the point in what I consider to be a very polite manner, and you get all vaginal about it. You accuse him of not having much intelligence about the matter, while sounding like a dofus. The situation is funny from start to finish.

I was not being vaginal about it. I told him that he seemed to have a lot of intelligence about him on the subject which I meant as a compliment. I was not trying to insult him at all. Because you want to be a jerk and take it that way that is fine, but that's not how I meant it.

You're still being vaginal about it. Sometimes it's better to just concede that you were being overly sensitive, laugh about it, and move on. It's not like this is a subject of any importance. It's just nerd talk.

lawl. Okay, point taken. But I really wasn't trying to be a smartass by the comment to LAM. I really did mean it as a "you probably know more than me about it" type of thing anyway. That is all.
