    Republicans block child nutrition bill

Republicans block child nutrition bill - Yahoo! News

WASHINGTON – House Republicans have temporarily blocked legislation to feed school meals to thousands more hungry children. Republicans used a procedural maneuver Wednesday to try to amend the $4.5 billion bill, which would give more needy children the opportunity to eat free lunches at school and make those lunches healthier. First lady Michelle Obama has lobbied for the bill as part of her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity.

House Democrats said the GOP amendment, which would have required background checks for child care workers, was an effort to kill the bill and delayed a final vote on the legislation rather than vote on the amendment.
Because the nutrition bill is identical to legislation passed by the Senate in August, passage would send it to the White House for President Barack Obama's signature. If the bill were amended, it would be sent back to the Senate with little time left in the legislative session.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md. said the House would hold separate votes on Thursday on the amendment and the bill.
Republicans say the nutrition bill is too costly and an example of government overreach.
"It's not about making our children healthy and active," said Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., the top Republican on the House Education and Labor Committee. "We all want to see our children healthy and active. This is about spending and the role of government and the size of government — a debate about whether we're listening to our constituents or not."
Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has also taken a swipe at the first lady's campaign, bringing cookies to a speech at a Pennsylvania school last month and calling the campaign a "school cookie ban debate" and "nanny state run amok" on her Twitter feed.
The legislation would give the government the power to decide what kinds of foods could be sold and what ingredients may be limited in school lunch lines and vending machines.
The Agriculture Department would create the standards, which would likely keep popular foods like hamburgers and pizza in school cafeterias but make them healthier, using leaner meat or whole wheat crust, for example. Vending machines could be stocked with less candy and fewer high-calorie drinks.
The bill would provide money to serve more than 20 million additional after-school meals annually to children in all 50 states. Many of those children now only receive after-school snacks. It would also increase the number of children eligible for school meals programs by at least 115,000, using Medicaid and census data to identify them.
The legislation would increase the amount of money schools are reimbursed by 6 cents a meal, a priority for schools that say they don't have the dollars to feed needy kids.

Why does every article about the GOP have Sarah Palin's name in it......will this woman ever go away?
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

nah with an adult population that's 60% obese and increasing we certainly don't need to do anything. just sit back and watch the problem will resolve itself...lol lots of critical thinkers here

Speaking of obesity, I just threw back 2 McD's dbl cheeseburgers and a large fry. I can do this everyday and still sit at 11% bf. The answer is for the parents to put away the fucking Xbox, get their kids' fat asses off the couch, and learn to say no when it comes to too much junk food.

This bill is as useful as any other govt program aimed at solving social problems, such as war on poverty, war on drugs, etc. It go as far in solving the obesity epidemic as any entitlement program has ever gone towards combating poverty. Obesity is a societal problem that will not be solved through govt spending The govt can't legislate a solution for this. Public awareness empowers people and will be the cure ultimately. Why do you think that only about 40% as many people smoke now compared to 50 years ago? It has fuck all to do with govt. Good thing this garbage was sacked.

If the GOP will continue to block 95% of all Obama proposals for the next two years, maybe we'll be able to stop some of the bleeding that is destroying the economy.

The U.S. obese population is not 60%, it's about half that. The second part of your post is closer to the truth, the obesity rates have leveled off the last few years rather than increasing.

This is just another racist piece of legislation to control black people. There's only one state according to the CDC who's white population is obese (W.V.) but most states have a black population that is obese. Yeah let's control what the poor black and hispanics eat since we already control what they think. Good to see the democrats are still supporting slavery 145 years later.

Yeah you can word it to make the GOP look like sht but the real sht is this joke of a bill to combat child hood obesity.

I haven't read the guidelines for what criteria they consider healthy but im picturing lots of canned veggies loaded with sodium and void of nutrients. Still fried or fat ladden protein sources.

It's there parents faults in many cases teaching there kids to eat like crap and live sedintary life styles. I dont want to waste tax money on financing useless pointless shit like this!

Fucking give me back my money and let those little diabetic fuckers croke at age 30

Yeah, federally mandated surgeon general's warning on every pack, ginormous tobacco tax, and the billions of federal dollars the gov't pumped in to the NIH to fund studies on Lung cancer had nothing to do with the drop in tobacco use, it was simply spontaneous enlightenment.

What I meant is that people became armed with knowledge and began to quit on their own. I don't think anyone would be against programs designed to increase public awareness about nutrition and the dangers of obesity. This bill, however, is just another example of the govt taking on the role of parent. Providing additional meals in public schools will not put a dent in obesity rates, so long as kids and their parents remain ignorant about proper nutrition and physical actividad.

People weren't armed with knowledge, the gov't spent a shitload of money to determine the risk and disseminated the information. Now, there is all of this solid information that everyone has access to that shows these fat little shits plugging their pieholes with twinkies are going to live miserable lives with a horrible disease that will cost this country billions more in healthcare than it does to provide healthy food in school. How is this even a discussion? How are people on a health and exercise website arguing about whether the gov't should make sure schools feed kids healthy meals and not diabetes inducing sugar sticks? I thought that was what I was paying taxes for, it sure wasn't so that they could dole out corporate welfare, start senseless wars, and give Gears' family that gubment cheese they love so much.

People have known obesity was very detrimental to one's health for at least two thousand years before this government existed.

The republicans are a bunch of old vaginas: crusty, musty, dry and angry. This shit is all politically positioned to target the Obamas. They want that black man done, out and labeled a mistake. That's been clear from day one when Roberts read the wrong swearing in oath to him to make Obama look the fool when he stumbled on the words as he recited them back.

Interesting. I grew up going to a public school. Sometimes we had pizza, and sometimes we had mac and cheese. We had different stuff on the menu all the time. Sometimes, I even brought my own lunch to school. I guess I was wrong for doing that since there were other kids that couldn't afford to do the same. But, even then, we had poor kids with deadbeat parents that were on the free lunch program. I guess that program wasn't getting the job done, so now we need another program on top of it, similar to Obama Care on top of the now insolvent programs, Medicare and Medicaid. Hey if one 2 trillion dollar program fails, let's keep funding it and dump another $2trillion program on top of it that's designed to accomplish the same goal. My god, what would we do if we didn't have such an efficient govt and cheerleaders like LAM to remind us of how lucky we are.

It should be no wonder to any of us that we are such a fucking comedy routine to the rest of the world.

lol @ your reading comprehension, please show one line in any post where I champion for the government or praise it. just because I don't' spout anti-government rhetoric do doesn't mean I'm pro-government. only a simpleton would think that as the world and society gets more complex that the government would play less of a role. name one industrialized country anywhere, anytime in history where the government played less of a role as that countries population increased and became more complex over time.

For the uneducated Vitamin water would be the ultimate drink but it's far from it....the outrage and energy wasted against this nutrition bill would be better used against the companies that mislead the kids and those who are uneducated when it comes to nutrition and let me tell you if you think we are so knowledgeable the nutrition section and a other forums would be empty.

so, again the viagra for medicare and medical and allow 300 lb fatso just sit at home and leave the world for a tv or a computerized version of life, prevails again. I still don't understand why their just not plugged a few in the back around, the t1:t8 this being a position on the spine.

Oh what a happy future we "Americans" will see with these sick demented F***s as they see for "themselves" also pinch the dollars of our "tax money" from each and every F*ckin one of these BullSh** systems.

    Thanks Min~!
This again, a decrease for progress in education, economics, future employment, security with science and other areas that require an education; not to mention a complete slap in the face on the issues of political science.
Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but Cabbage with a College Education.

Most everyone knows that fast food is unhealthy. You don't need a lot of eduction to understand that. The main culprit is probably lack of physical actividad. The internet, 200,000 different channels on TV, and video games are probably just as much of a problem as the fast food industry. When I was a kid, we didn't have any of that shit and we were out riding bikes or playing kickball in the neighborhood. In have to come in and force my boys to turn that shit off and get outside sometimes.
