'Lovergirl' Singer Teena Marie Dies: Report
UPDATE II: CNN, for whom Martin works, is also reporting that Marie's manager confirms the passing.
UPDATE: Martin reports that Marie's manager told him that Marie's daughter found her dead in her home today, and that she suffered a seizure last month. To follow the story, head over to Martin's Twitter feed.
According to Roland Martin, R&B singer Teena Marie has passed away at the age of 54. Martin cites Marie's manager, Mike Gardner.
Philadelphia radio station WDAS, was the first to report the news; Chicago radio station V103 is also is reporting the death.
Born Marie Christine Brockert, Teena Marie rose to prominence in the late 70s and 80s, striking a musical and personal partnership with funk legend Rick James. She released 13 studio albums, six of which went platinum on the US R&B chart. Two of her albumswent platinum, and six altogether were gold.
Marie's biggest hit came in 1984 with her single 'Lovergirl,' which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Teena Marie was signed to Motown Records in 1979. The singer-songwriter played the rhythm guitar, congas and keyboards.
Marie switched labels and signed to Epic Records in 1983 and released a slew of albums for them, including Robbery and Emerald City. She left them in the mid 90s, produced an album of her own, then signed onto Cash Money Records.
Born Marie Christine Brockert in Santa Monica, California, she was known for her pitch-perfect voice. Teena Marie overcame an addiction to prescription pain killers and released her last album Congo Square in 2009.

She was very reclusive for the last few years, and I had always wondered why she wasn't recording anymore. Now I know the poor thing had health issues.
Very sad, thankfully she had 1 more Christmas. I hope she was able to tell her family she loved them and was able to be told she was loved.The journey of a thousand miles must begin with a single step.

Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012
