    Advice about Internships

Hey guys, so I'm a college junior, majoring in exercise science. I love sports, most specifically; hockey. I'm looking for a paid internship that I can apply to for this summer, i know it seems trivial but any suggestions of which direction I should take.

    Thank you in advance!

Your college should have a career center where you can get help with your resume and co-op,internship placement. At the very least they should have a list of employers.

Job fairs always worked really well for me, but I don't remember seeing opportunities for exercise science majors. There should be a list of employers and cooperations you can check out to know if it will be a waste of time or not.

If nothing else works just take things into your own hands and start submitting resumes to any place you can think of that requires that type of education.

Internships aren't trivial man, having experience will really help you when you are looking for a career.

go down to your nearest local professional arena. start knocking on doors and introducing yourself. don't be afraid to tell them what you want to do and your future goals. look for any entry point into the industry.

I've gotten internships through school and through determination. Both work and both are beneficial. If you have a place you want to work for then start getting some contacts built with them. Ask for a tour, ask to talk to someone, get your name out there and let them know what you want to do. If they see ambition they'll probably bite.

It looks like you live in Connecticut...from a national context, you are close to Mike Boyle's facility, and he just so happens to specialize in hockey players. I don't know how practical the distance would be for you though.

I know he does internships, that is a very big part of his business, but I don't know they are paid internships.

Either way, you would be much better off interning unpaid with Mike Boyle, who many consider the premier S&C guy in the world, than doing some paid intern with Joe Shmoe.

    Definitely something to think about!

I was lucky enough to do a paid internship for college because I already had a job in that field. Otherwise I think paid internships are very rare.

It depends on your degree. I've never had one that wasn't paid but I'm an engineer.

Whether the internship is paid or not should not be the driving factor in selecting an internship. The work experience and what you can talk about coming out of the internship is the thing that will land you your "real" job.

Yeah, I understand that non-paid internships are much more valuable, however I'm a student and spending a whole four months without any source of income would be pretty rough, especially because I'm used to making a good amount of money for the school semester during the summer, but I appreciate everyone's response..

I am very interested in Mike Boyle's strength and conditioning internship, that is obviously the ideal situation, however with only 6 positions, it will be hard for me to get the spot, but that's not gonna stop me from doin my best to land it.

I would suggest definitely doing an internship. My college had a program that offered internships or you can find your own but still get credit for it. I basically wanted to be a stockbroker/financial planner thru school. I interned at a prominent firm and absolutely hated it. Right then I knew it wasn't for me. Kinda bad timing as I was in my last semester of school and needed a career when I finished. Then I stumbled into my job whcih I never evem thought would be a good career, and here I am six years later. If you can't find one thru your college, I would suggest going out on your own and searching for one. The company I first approached told me they didn't have anything available. I basically told them I would work for free and that I just wanted it on my resume. I told them once I finished school that I would appreciate if they would consider me for a full time position. They hired me as an intern and even paid me. I would start with maybe your parents friends or thru acquaintances. Use your networking skills. Go to various association meetings in your field. Employers love it when you take the initiative while in college and go out of the norm. Association meetings are probably one of the best places to start. For example, if you want to be a lawyer, you would look up various associations geared toward lawyers and go to their scheduled meetings. Generally, anyone can attend these meetings so don't be shy and check them out. Good luck to you!
