    Question Attn Canadians need an answer please...

    suppose a person needs mental health care in Canada... does it take two months or more to even get an appointment with a shrink and get on an anxiety med? or is that bullshit? is it good health care to see a social worker once a week 6 times or so then finally get to see a gp then have a couple appointments with him before he can then send you to a shrink who can actually prescribe meds? is this standard?

    i'm being told this

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    i needed a referal for a psych eval so i got one from my neurologist
    i show up at the clinic with the referral and say i waana see a shrink
    they say no u cant u need to see a social worker
    then she (social worker) said theres a clinic where they r accepting patiients so go there
    i went and they charged 200 bucks just for a blood test...
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    blah blah blah. a person needs an anxiety med and it takes over two months to even get close to getting on one?

    supposedly it will be 8 weeks to even get to having a physical with this dr before they get put on a waiting list to see a shrink?

    sounds like bullshit. is health care really that fucked up there?

    You can get anxiety medication from your doc, here is the deal, some docs are busy and yes you might need to wait a while but every clinic has walk in hours or days, so if you need anything urgent then you use the phone to call couple of clinics and find out which one is accepting walk ins..
    for the psychologist, if you are referred by a doctor it is free(government health care), if you go your self then you gotta pay an hourly rate plus if you do have private insurance from your work then it can be a different story...
    This what i know about eastern provinces, it might be different in Quebec and western provinces.

    And blood tests are free...

    thank you. pretty much knew i was being lied to.

    i asked why he didn't just go to an er or crises place and he said that's only for if you are suicidal. i think this is a person very content to remain living with his parents and having nothing expected of him. being well would mean he might have to live like a full grown man and not a 15 year old boy.

    $200 for a blood test. Lol

    My friend needed a nose surgery he was worried how long they were going to make him wait for his condition is bad. One hospital said 2 weeks, the other hospital said come back in 2 days. Hes surgery is done. Theres never that long of a wait. Oh and his surgery was free.

    It depends on what your situation is, if your going to a dentist to polish and shine ur teeth then yes you pay but if you need to fix terrible teeth or something then its covered. And a lot of times, schools/work have some insurance benefits that you can use even to shine your teeth once a week if you wanted.

    200 for a blood test is a load of crock.

    There is more than likely a referral needed for a psych eval. That can be organized through the GP. Yes the wait time could be 2+ months to get an appt. I am not sure about getting anxiety drugs from your GP, but I imagine they could prescribe them.

    The story doesn't really make sense though. You don't just show up to a clinic with a referral, you make an appt. If you have a referral to a psychiatrist then you wouldn't be seeing a social worker. Seems to be more to the story.

    Social workers are not covered by our health plan - psychiatrists are though, by referral, and as mentioned, any GP may prescribe anxiety meds. I have a few friends here who take them. The GP prescribes the meds and writes a referral to see the psychiatrist. You MAY have to wait a while to see the shrink, but you get on the meds in the meantime and it's all covered. I don't recall anyone needing a blood test first, but because depression and anxiety can be caused by hormone problems (thyroid and testosterone come to mind) it's prudent to test these before going on medication, unless of course he's having an acute attack in which case sure, get emergency care right away to manage it.

    Bloodwork ordered by a naturopath isn't covered. I wonder if this is what he was trying to do?

    thank you for the answers.

    he's trying to bullshit me that he has a plan other than living with his parents. supposedly he has had 6 weekly appointments with a social worker and needed a blood test and physical from a gp before he even gets referred to a shrink. when he said you watch i'll get well 2 years ago he got all this work done and put on a thyroid med so that has been done and of course it would be monitored right? i take thyroid meds and they test your blood to make sure it's balanced and at the right dose... he was prescribed an anxiety med then but his gp took him off it while he went on the thyroid med. he never went back on the anxiety med after he realized his agoraphobia, germ phobia, etc etc etc weren't caused by a sightly under active thyroid. but supposedly he has no family dr who can refer him to a shrink or prescribe meds. his whole life consists of avoiding everything he possibly can. he has had a "germ thing" for as long as i have known him, has to use his own silverware etc can't kiss a girl is scared a vagina has germs in it. he knows it doesn't but instead of getting help for this he expects the world to baby his phobias. he hasn't had the motivation in 6 years to even just get on an anxiety med and see if it helps.

    i see a person not at all committed to getting well. i see a man CONTENT to live at his parents on his computer avoiding doing anything to change it and i'm sick of hearing the whining and bullshit of a person who isn't taking the actions he should.

    Why should he change? His parents are content to support him.

    if that's what he wants to do fine but be honest about it for christ sake.

    i'm tired of hearing how he wants to change and is SO unhappy blah blah when he won't actually lift a finger to do anything about it. seriously it's like you're walking down the road and see someone laying there crying cuz they are stuck in the mud. but they won't do anything but lay there and cry. next time you walk by they tell you how hard they are trying to get out of the mud so you won't give up on them but it's all bullshit. so you say ya know if you really wanted to change this situation you would... cuz it's obvious. they cry and say oh no don't give up on me i'm trying really. at that point if you actually believe they are trying you're as fucking retarded as they are.

    he just wants company on yahoo while he lives in his safe little mud hole.
