Fixing a corrupt Microsoft Word document

So just recently I wanted to update my resume I used for the job I currently have and when I went to find it, found out that when I formatted my old computer I completely forgot to backup my resume.

I used a data recovery freeware program on my USB stick and was able to recover it from there, but when I tried opening it in Microsoft Word it told me the file was corrupt and wasn't able to open.

I was just wondering if there is any possible way or freeware program to use to fix the file so I can view it?

I guess I should add I've already tried the "Open and Repair" option given in the Word program.

Also if it means anything the error message that comes up is "The Office Open XML file... cannot be opened because there are problems with its contents."

    What size is the file?

If nothing else surely it don't take that long to make a new one (?). Of course, I might just be saying that because I can type extremely fast at about 60 WPM or so.

I realize this, but I had a sweet template that I have no idea how I got or where it came from. I was quite pleased with this resume and actually don't think I could replicate it lol. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

I need the actual size. The point is that if the file is too small for what it is, then it's too corrupted to recover.

You could download Open Office and try to open the file with that.

    My bad.

    It is 48.13 KB.

RE: Open Office - I'll give that a shot.

Download 7Zip or another file that can extract zip files. Try to unzip the .docx file and see if you can get at the internal XML stuff.

A .docx is nothing more than a bunch of zipped XML files.

I won't lie, I tried to work with that 7Zip, but I'm quite illiterate when it comes to programs like that and realized I had no idea what I was doing.

Thanks for all the suggestions but I'll just start from scratch, it's the easiest thing to do at this point I think.
