So... uhh.. my Dad has cancer

    Skin cancer. Melanoma.

Good news is that it hasn't spread to organs below the shoulder. The bad news is that the results for the brain, and everything above the shoulder (the spot) haven't yet come back yet. It appears pretty localized to that area on his back but that's coming from an obviously hopeful, bias, optimistic fuckhead like me who can't even imagine my Dad being gone from this earth in less than a year.

    I don't want your sympathy, I really don't.

What I want is some personal stories, some information/facts about this kind of skin cancer, etc.

    Fuck the world.

i'm really sorry. i know one person who has this on his arm. it branched out under the skin but it was removed and he was treated and is fine now. that was over 20 years ago. i think you should try very hard to not assume the worst. i hope things go well with the test results.

Don't look back ~ You're not going that way!

Where and Why Can Melanoma Spread?

Where and Why Can Melanoma Spread - Location of Melanoma Metastases

A thread regarding a similar situation:

Brain Metastasis - Melanoma and Skin Cancer Forum - Cancer Forums

I do not have any personal experience to share however I've lost a few people close to me recently, one to breast cancer. The links above seem relevant to your situation. I'll keep you and yours in my meditations bro.

My dad was a sheet metal worker, foreman, etc. his whole life. He would work on building or renovating skyscrapers in Boston, MA and other metropolitan areas mostly in the eastern half of the country and in Texas.

He was in the sun. Allot.

He was found with melanoma and it's pre-cursors several times in the last 5 years of his life. They would detect a spot and cut it out lickity split. No probs. Then he got lung cancer from asbestosis and smoking that spread to his brain before it was even discovered. He went through intense kemo and they thought it was in a good remission state, but it was aggressive. It came back with a vengence less than a year later and he died in front of my family and I at his side. Even on his last day, he was still managing his usual humor and hitting on the nurses.

With melanoma, as long as it is detected early enough, it's all good. Hopefully your family just has a scare - but he will need to be checked out at LEAST every 6 months by a dermatologist. They will keep chopping at him for the rest of his life on a routine basis - it's just the way it goes.

Additionally. I grew up with a kid who developed it at 13. Everyone in his family had it and he was one of those kids that lived on the beach all summer from when he was 6. Last I heard from him, he was doing well.

    i'm sorry bro.

i had basal cell carcinoma 3 yrs ago on the side of my face. i let it go too long and it spread under the skin. by the time they cut it out, it took 54 stitches to sew me back up. i looked like frankenstein for a while, but i'm beautiful again now. just a 2" scar.

i avoid the sun like the fucking plague now. . . i know being tan is cool, but not at the risk of your health.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I do have good anecdotal stories, though. My mom had cancer in her head twice and once in her uterus. She managed to live though it both times with the help of good doctors and superior medicine. So no matter how bad it seems, remember their is hope.

I'm hoping the in-bold portion is what happened. The doctor seemed very blunt yesterday. For instance, my Dad played golf two days ago and asked when he could get back out on the course. The guy was pretty straightforward in saying that July at the earliest and that there was a chance he wouldn't play at all this year, unless he went on an extravagant winter trip. Although discouraging, planning that he'll be able to golf next winter is just what the doctor ordered... literally.

    Thanks for the reply.

It's crazy to think about my Dad out of the sun. My grandmother would always call my Dad stupid and an idiot but my Dad just loved the sun, and rarely put lotion on, if ever.

Definitely a lesson learned as far as my marinating in the sun habits go.

Positive, positive, positive. I like this.

Again, it's tough to imagine him out of the sun. But if that's what will keep him alive when he skullfucks the shit out of the cancer, that's what's going to happen.

    Thanks.

Sox, I really have no personal story for you, I mean I have watched my grandmother battle cancer but I was really young. I am, however, going through something with my Dad as well and I can relate to how you are feeling. He is in the middle stages of Alzheimer's and things are really starting to go down hill as of just the past month or so...So, I know when you think about your Dad that it gets you down because I am in the same boat, i feel for you man. PM me if you ever need to talk about shit man I'm serious because it might make both of us feel better. Take care brother and I wish your Dad serious good luck.

P.S. my dad is only 62....62 and midway through Alzheimers??? what the fuck

    Thanks Kelju.

These are the stories I love to hear. At Mass General in Boston, he'll be taken care of by some of the best doctors in the world. There's definitely hope...

    Glad to hear that, man.

I really can't envision him going out this way. These positive stories are giving me hope.

62... 58... it's all too young to be inching towards death. If I were older, perhaps I could understand it better. But I'd feel pretty cheated if my Dad left this earth while I'm still in my 20's.

I'll probably be taking you up on your offer as more and more information is made available in the coming days.

Take care and good luck, dude.

My favorite uncle got melanoma when he was like 23. I don't remember how long his battle was but he died within that year. Only personal experience I have with it.

Hang in there my friend. This must be tough on you. Princes dad has melanoma on his face. Lucky he was smart enough to treat it early. He goes in every 6 months to get things checked out and cut off if necessary. It have been a few years now, and it seems to be under control. As long as he follows up on his appointments and doesn't ignore anything out of the ordinary, hopefully things will be ok.

My father was diagnosed with cancer of the bladder about ten years ago. They quickly removed his bladder which had a massive tumour in it and he now uses a colostomy bag as an external bladder.
Late last year his Doc discovered a lump that was growing fast on his kidney. After monitoring it for some months they decided to remove half of his kidney and the results came back that it was infact a mallignant tumour, he has been fine ever since.
My advise is to keep your bias, optimistic attitude unless you have concrete evidence that suggests you should think otherwise. This was the only way I could cope with the thought of losing my father and it paid off for me both times.
These days, a cancer diagnoses doesn't necessarily mean the worst as it did in the past.
My father sat in silence for quite some time with his cancer and eventually told us that "he could feel it inside him." He was so depressed that he didn't even plan to see the doc therefore it was not a case that an early diagnoses saved his life.

    I hope this helps.

My dad had it on his shoulder at 48, had it removed......then age 49 he had a heart attack, lived through that (Texas man ate Steak at least 3 times a week, plus my step mom cooked with bacon grease,, fried chicken, gravy, eggs, anything needing grease she had a tub of old bacon drippings)....then one day at work he died from electrocution when a breaker he thought was switched off somehow magically got turned back on, age 50. He was always fishing, working on the car or doing yard work with no shirt on, never used SPF anything, just sweat which with beads on his skin probably just magnified the sun.....
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

I'm sorry to hear of all the worry sickness has caused so many of us and our families.

I've had actinic keratosis on my face - it was treated with topical chemotherapy (5-fluorouracil) and I basically had no skin in the middle of my face for about two months - just a weeping red yuck.

This next part's gross so stop reading if you're squeamish.

I basically had to blow-dry the plasma on my nose so I could get dermablend to stick to it. Removing it at the end of the day was excruciating. Some days I just couldn't face that so I'd leave it off, but I looked so frightening that women would pull their children to their sides to keep them from looking at me. Clerks in stores weren't nearly as helpful as I'm used to - in fact, they'd avoid me altogether if possible.

I'm used to being thought of as attractive; this was a real eye-opener for me. I only had to visit being disfigured; some people - survivors of burns for example - have to live there.

Actinic keratosis has about a one-in-five chance of progressing to carcinoma; I'm glad I caught mine in time to do something about it; I've had about $2000 worth of laser treatments so far to improve the colour and texture of the skin that grew back and these treatments are not covered by medicare. I'll probably need another few thousand dollars' worth before I can go without makeup to cover what remains of the discolouration and damage to my skin.

I used to use tanning beds a few times a week - I was told it would give me a "safe, protective" tan.

I'll never use a tanning bed again.

soxmuscle, I'll have a good thought for your dad,
Wondering where to start? Confused? "Homework 1" will get you started.
