    Seven Open Gov Websites Shutdown

    Original

Obama has money to attack Libya, but not enough to keep his "open government" websites going.

If you're not saying this is bullshit, it's because you have a black cock in your mouth.

Many of the Obama administration's top open government initiatives are set to be turned off by May 31.

Government sources confirm that the Office of Management and Budget is planning to take seven websites dark in two months because of a lack of funding.

One government official, who requested anonymity because they didn't get permission to discuss the topic, said funding will begin to run out on April 20 for public sites IT Dashboard, Data.gov and paymentaccuracy.gov. The source said OMB also is planning on shutting down internal government sites, including Performance.gov, FedSpace and many of the efforts related the FEDRamp cloud computing cybersecurity effort.

The official said two other sites, USASpending.gov and Apps.gov/now, will run through July 30 but go dark soon after.

"We need at least another $4 million just to keep USASpending.gov operating this year," the official said. "We are looking at a pass-the-hat approach, but it could be challenging to get that done in time."

I'm more curious how exactly it would cost 4 million to run USASpending.gov .

Are the servers solid gold or something? Wikipedia has much more traffic and costs less, so it's certainty not a traffic issue. Are they paying their webmaster/developers 500k a year or something?

I think it's also the costs associated with aggregating the information for use on the site. Supposedly it's a small army of people.

But yeah, that number is questionable.

Now, if they could shut down the Oval Office, Senate and House for a little while... We all may like it so much we wouldn't want them to turn the lights back on. I jest of coarse. We would need them turned back on to give them time to clean out their desks.

The servers are prolly in a centralized database - the juice cost alone is a monster. I take care of a large database center for a telecommunications company and the electric bill is monstrous - let alone the cost of the farm itself, cooling, heating, upkeep and salaries.

Oh I agree (and am aware of datacenter costs).

That said, the government already has a datacenter in place. I'd like to know how decomissioning this website would save 4 million dollars. They could certainly decommission a few servers and fire a few people, however how does that translate to 4 million dollars? The website can't be that highly trafficked.

It's not like since they're retiring this one website they get to shut down an entire datacenter.

    That was the lowest bid.
