Carlin was a bitter old man. Yeah, sometimes he was right, but he wasn't spreading humor, just bitterness.
He was also a lightening rod for pseudo-intellectuals.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
to improve their lives.

If you're bitter, it means you lost at life. The reason is simple. Life can't make you bitter. No matter how shitty it gets, it can't force you to be bitter. Bitter is what happens when you decide that you can't do anything worthwhile for yourself or others.
In other words, it's what you become when you give up.
That old man fed his bitter hate to younger generations, and sadly, some foolishly ate it up. The world is better off now that he's dead.

I didn't perceive Carlin as bitter. Not bitter at all.
He comments on a wide range of topics.
With his take on this topic, he's spot-on, IMO.
The Federal reserve giving money to McDonald's and Harley Davidson. Bailing out the banks.
Here, Carlin is succinct and to the point. He says a lot with few words, in 3 minutes.

George Carlin and Bill Hicks were constantly referred to as bitter because they called things how they saw it and although they were always right on the money, the majority of the US population deemed this unpatriotic and anti-American.
I was blown away when I first discovered these two and I'm an outsider looking into America. Bill Hicks was a hero in England yet he struggled filling a small room at an American comedy bar and often complained that the crowd "just don't get it".
This is why I love these guys. They had the balls to speak out against the stupidity and ignorance that many American people are so proud to display. Both had eventually given up on their race and realised that the US was the biggest culprit for hypocrisy and they had most of their citizens bluffed.
Bitter, yes. Unpatriotic, not at all. They are true Americans.

yep...the people that don't agree with him are the ones politicians love.
the sad truth is that the US could not survive in a free market world, our primary schools and now for profit colleges are a joke.
my parents travel all over the world but also take several cruises a year. they always tell me how they see the American children playing video games, etc. while at the dinner table (which is rude of course), while the Chinese and Japanese children are always reading books...
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

First off, I've never listed to anything from Bill Hicks, so I can't comment on him.
Did you not listen to Carlin? He bitch, bitched, bitched. "Oh, life it horrible and it ain't gonna change. Nothing it right. It's all bad." He was the definition of bitter.
I watched that clip. He mentioned nothing about change. "But, oh! Change isn't possible! We're all screwed forever!" Change only stops being an option when you're dead. Like Carlin.
True American? Yes, just like the founding fathers who said "What's the point of resisting? The British has a stronger army than we do. Let's go drink our overtaxed tea." Right...

Doms, I've referred to you as IM's resident flag waving patriot before so it wont offend you if I say it again. You are the audience whom Carlin and Hicks consistently targeted. You strike me as a proud patriot for patriotism's sake and that to me is a sad state of consciousness. Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike you and I don't want to come across as attacking you, I just rarely agree with anything you have to say.
Indeed, LAM.
I teach in East Asia.
Very competitive. Education is serious stuff. Parents can be very difficult and demanding.
The difference is enormous.
I'm not saying this is good, but East Asia is growing by leaps and bounds in many ways.
Many of my students are in the US to study now, and will go to the US to study....but they will return to work in East Asia.
They know that the American economic model has many flaws.

Where exactly does patriotism fit into what I've said about Carlin? When did I claim that I didn't like Carlin based on his views of America? I didn't. I said that I don't like him because of bitterness he spews and nothing else.
You're the one that brought patriotism into this. You're seeing flag waving where there is none.
So, what do you think my opinion on different issues are? Since you disagree with so much of what I express, I'd like to know.

An entertainer's job is to...wait for it...entertain. That's not to say that entertainers can't have a political opinion, but the idea that every entertainer should share that with the public is ridiculous. That's like saying that every politician should be an entertainer. It's not their job.
And no Carlin won't be forgotten, but every passing year will diminish his memory.

I agree with him except that I believe it is the state's fault for creating a system that allows this. Sure greedy corporations lobby and buy off politicians but without corrupt politicians it wouldn't pass. Everyone's greedy, the 'fatcats' are no different than us in that regard but their job is to make money and if the politicians did their job we wouldn't have this problem. When you bitch about 'big business' realize the federal government is big business.
Hippies blame corporate greed for hemp(fuel) being banned because the oil companies didn't want the competition. The oil company exists to make money, the politician's job however should be public service and the one who deviated from that is the one to blame. Legislating away competition is also not a capitalist move.

the "american dream" is more for immigrants than those who are born in america......

agreed with the above post..most people immigrate because they see dollars, but the reality strikes them when they face reality

I labelled you a patriot and I'd go as far as to say that you resent Carlin because of his outspoken views on America, not his bitterness (which is actually passion in disguise). Where you see bitterness, I see brutal honesty on a range of topics that many people can relate to 100%.
You say that you agree with him on some topics however you state that "the world is better off now that he's dead." Really?
What entertainers do you have now who can relate to the the mainstream US and get them to think about the world in which they live? He would have been one of America's most valued social critics in my opinion however you're glad he's dead? Sounds to me that your glad he is silenced however he will never be silenced and his words will become more and more poignant in future years.
"I leave the symbols to the symbol minded" - George Carlin

Speak the truth and you are labeled a <insert hated political name here>. Believe everything the talking heads tell you without a single thought and you are enlightened.
Carlin was right on the money. We have no say in how this country is run. Voting? Dead people vote and they vote often. This happens with incredible frequency but nothing is ever done about it because there has to be some failsafe so the "right" person wins whatever election. Rarely is the outcome not a foregone conclusion.
The God bless America clip is another thing that Carlin was right about.
