    Gas tops $3.90 nationwide

    Gas tops $3.90 nationwide

    By Ben Rooney, staff reporter
    April 29, 2011: 07:35 AM EDT

The average price of a gallon of gasoline reached the $3.90 mark Friday, after climbing 2 cents overnight, according to a survey by motorist group AAA.

With Friday's boost, gas prices have increased for 38 days in a row. During that time, prices have risen more than 36 cents, a jump of 10%.

While the national average remains 21 cents below the record high of $4.114, gas prices in some U.S. states have already risen to new all-time highs. Ohio became the latest state where gas prices now average more than $4 a gallon. Gas prices in the state now average $4.054 a gallon, up a staggering 12 cents from Thursday.

Gas now averages more than $4 a gallon in nine states and the District of Columbia. But prices remain below the national average in 18 states, with the cheapest prices in Wyoming, where gas averages $3.59 a gallon.

The recent surge reflects a runup in the price of crude oil, which has spiked above $110 a barrel, up 20% in the year to date. But gas prices are also being driven by seasonal factors, including scheduled maintenance at oil refineries.

Many states require gas stations to sell cleaner blends of gasoline during the summer months, when Americans do most of their driving for the year. As a result, oil refiners often shut down for a period of time to retool, which can put upward pressure on gas prices.

While gas prices typically rise at this time of year, many analysts note that prices were already unusually high before the annual runup into the so-called summer driving season. That's because oil prices have been extremely volatile, with turmoil in the Middle East and a weak U.S. dollar spurring the rise. In addition, demand for energy has been strong in rapidly expanding economies, particularly China's. Meanwhile, consumers appear to be cutting back on spending as gas prices take a bigger bite out of household budgets.

Government data released Thursday showed that U.S. economic growth slowed in the first quarter to 1.8% from 3.1% in the previous quarter, reflecting pullback in consumer spending and higher prices imported oil.

The economic pain caused by high gas prices has become politically charged, with officials in Washington calling for an end to federal subsidies for oil and gas companies.

President Obama announced earlier this week that the Justice Department will form a task force to investigate possible manipulation of the oil and gas markets.

Nothing like a good Congressional task force to waste a few $B more. Don't you just know they'll get the problem solved once and for all now. I wonder if the Congress will bring some oil execs to cap hill for another dog & pony show.

Just remember, when gas prices went up under Bush's administration, it was his fault. But now that it's happening under Obama's administration, it's not his fault.

It was Bush and all his bog oil buddies. Now it's Qaddafi's fault. Truth is, it's OPEC and the speculators. At the same time, I doubt Obama seriously wants prices to come down at all. Quite the opposite. It's mind boggling to look back at all the issues he was given a pass on during the campaign. He could have promised to pardon Charles Manson and liberals were so drunk on the Obama kool-aid they wouldn't have blinked.

This is correct. However, when your presidents are starting wars in the Middle East, it gives power to the speculators, which raises gas prices.

The task force will investigate, then decide they need to form a committee. The committee will then meet and have discussions, perhaps forming sub-committees. There will be proposals and motions, and it will all be done with the best interest of the American People in mind. In the end, they will decide that action may or may not need to be taken to address said issue.

I started a thread predicting Brent Crude hitting $150-200 a few months ago.

The current gas prices were long ago predicted.

Why are people complaining in the US?

Gas prices in the US are CHEAP, even at $6 per gallon.

And also, The President has NOTHING to do with international Brent Crude prices, nor the WTI prices.

Want gas prices to come down? Any time gas goes above say $2/gallon nobody goes to work that day. Across the country. They'll notice when you hit them in the pocket book. What's going to happen? The whole country will get fired? Ha! When you hit them where it hurts they'll take notice and actually do something CONSTRUCTIVE.

But it will never happen because this country is so against standing united we're easily beaten by anything. We bicker at each other like siblings with brain damage all the while the world is happening around us and we are oblivious to it.

$4.25 around here. I'd welcome $3.90 right now.

Ive been using E85, I take a 20% hit in gas mileage, but I can get it for 3.05 and gas is 4.17 here. When gas spikes is the only time it is actually worth it to buy it.

    I'm terrible at math.

If you pay 3.05 versus 4.17 does that offset your 20% dip in mileage?

    That's like $1 versus $1.20, right?

Does that work out to $3.66 per gallon equivalent for the same mileage.

    I hate math.

remember, we have beens spoiled, compared to other industrialized nations we still pay the least. When my husband was in the military stationed in germany they were paying the equivalent of 8 dollars a gallon ( over a decade ago)

Now that china and india are becoming addicted to oil and china has surpassed us in purchasing it ( thanks to capitalism winning out over communism), free market principles deem that higher prices are necessary as there is more demand for a limited supply of resources. We need to wean our addiction as quickly as possible, as an ex chemist, i can tell you we use billions of gallons of oil just to make those stupid plastic bags you trash at the grocery store, fat asses need to ride their bikes , carpool, etc. I ride my bike the 32 mile round trip ride to work 2 days a week ( i invested 75 dollars on good front and back lights) and drive my honda civic ( 8 yrs old and fully paid for ) the rest so I spend only 80 dollars a month ( up from 50 two months ago though). If you paid for your SUV already, don't invest 15 grand getting a new honda civic, but if you are looking for a new car ( your suv is toast) , hell, get that economy car. ( forget priuses, honda civic hybrids will help you recover your investment quicker)

The question is what would that something "constructive" turn out to be?

Your boss probably has nothing to do with gas prices. I know my boss doesn't. So if we all just don't show for work... how long until your boss calls and asks what's up?

And then who tells the "gas people" that we didn't show up?

I'm betting the boss would hire a new employee and Shell and all the other gas folks would focus on China as eager consumers.

Let's all bicycle to work for a year and then see what the pump prices look like.

Of course that's a 26-mile hike for me. And it rains a lot. Plus winter would sucks. And... Okay, so I don't have a 100% solution either.

Funny how the big push was "save a tree use a plastic bag", wait just a fucking moment, we can plant more trees. You can't make more oil.

internal strife will be the downfall of the US. China, Japan, Germany, etc. do not have political party's built on racial divides that dictate policy in their countries that divide them. conservatives on the far right are so busy trying to keep minorities down by attacking unions, cutting social services etc. they haven't even noticed that Asian men now have the highest median incomes in the US.

No lesson learned because they didn't have to suffer the consequences of their actions.
