Anyone well read on the nrf2 pathway/brain neuroplasticity?

Read a couple of pretty good books/listened to a few good podcasts on this stuff. Very fascinating. If you haven't had a chance, there is a pretty good book titled, "Power Up Your Brain" by Dr. David Perlmutter about diet, exercise, supplementation, and how they can improve brain health through this nrf2 pathway.
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

    This one?

The quest for enlightenment has occupied mankind for millennia. And from the depictions we've seen - monks sitting on meditation cushions, nuns kneeling in prayer, shamans communing with the universe - it seems that this elusive state is reserved for a chosen few. But now, neuroscientist David Perlmutter and medical anthropologist and shaman Alberto Villoldo have come together to explore the commonalities between their specialties with the aim of making enlightenment possible for anyone. Joining the long-separated worlds of science and spirit, Perlmutter explores the exciting phenomena of neurogenesis and mitochondrial health, while Villoldo brings his vast knowledge of shamanic and spiritual practices to the table. Together they draw from the most powerful tools in each discipline to create the Power Up Your Brain programme, a ground-breaking, five-week plan that helps prime the brain for enlightenment. With nutritional advice, dietary supplements, physical exercise, shamanic practices, meditation and visualisations, Perlmutter and Villoldo guide readers, step by step, through a program to help them clear their minds from previous trauma and open themselves up to experience the inner peace, vast insight and extraordinary creativity that define the experience of enlightenment.

Yeah, I'm not much in to the spiritual stuff, but there is a ton of hard science in it. Also, there is a torrent with a 90 minute interview with him from coast to coast radio that is pretty kick ass. They are a bit on the sappy side with the compassion and stuff, but the hard info on how to keep your brain functioning optimally is solid. You'll never guess which food group they recommend you limit, outside of sweets/sugar, in order to optimize brain function.

That is complete and utter bullshit, the equivalent of 8 minute abs for the brain. Spiritual masters have been studied plenty by panels of neuroscientists with remarkable results. But, those people were fully dedicated to their brand of spiritualism. Daniel Goleman wrote many books about the studies done in collaboration with the Dalia Lama, Buddhist monks, and skeptical scientist. He called those monks Olympic meditators who lived a life of peace and tranquility. It's easy to stay centered and mindful in a temple. The lifestyle produces results. But making an "enlightenment preparation program" for people busy with their family, friends, and career bombarded by information and technology is as useful as giving a skinny beer bellied college kid the training program of a IFBB champion.

They go over that stuff, not watching the news in the am, etc. What they are referring to with enlightenment is thinking from the prefrontal cortex, not necessarily speaking to god and such. They go over what the shamans call the feminine life force, the mitochondria, which is inherited from your mother. They also discuss a host of diseases (MS, possibly some cancers, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's) that are all related to mitochondrial damage. Basically, your mitochondria produce free radicals as a result of the work they do and this in turn damages the organism. Activating this nrf2 pathway initiates a chain of events that turns on genes for brain plasticity AND production of glutathione, an antioxidant/anti-inflammatory pathway in your body that cleans away these free radicals and amplifies the power of antioxidants you may be taking to do the same. I've always thought cancer was simply abnormal cell growth that eventually your body can't take care of and at a certain point, there is no turning back from. I don't look at it as a meditation book, it is more of a brain optimization book that requires you to meditate. I don't meditate, but he talks about what it does in your brain and how to practice it. He basically gives you supplement and exercise recommendations, tells you to meditate, and fast once a month for 24 hours. Actually, the fasting information and how it affects the brain was pretty cool.

As for what he tells you to limit....Grains. Also, he says you want a higher percentage of fat in your diet than what most eat.
