Jack Kevorkian a.k.a. "Dr. Death" hospitalized for pneumonia, kidney trouble

Kevorkian hospitalized for pneumonia, kidney trouble

    By the CNN Wire Staff
    UPDATED: 04:06 PM EDT 05.19.11

Assisted-suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian has been hospitalized in Michigan for pneumonia and a kidney-related ailment, his attorney said Thursday.

The 82-year-old former pathologist has struggled with kidney problems for years and had checked into a hospital earlier this month for similar problems, his lawyer, Mayer Morganroth, told CNN.

He checked back into Beaumont Hospital in the Detroit suburb of Royal Oak on Wednesday after suffering a relapse Wednesday night, Morganroth said.

"He has some testing to have done," Morganroth said Thursday on his way to the hospital.

"He's a little tired, but he's doing all right," he added.

Officials at Beaumont Hospital could not comment, citing confidentiality policies and privacy clauses.

Kevorkian, dubbed "Dr. Death," made national headlines as a supporter of physician-assisted suicide and "right-to-die" legislation.

He was charged with murder numerous times through the 1990s for helping terminally ill patients take their own lives.

He was convicted on second-degree murder charges in 1999 stemming from the death of a patient who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly called Lou Gehrig's disease. He was paroled in 2007.

I never saw what the fuss was all about with his work. If someone is on their deathbed, why go through insufferable pain and anguish and put your family through it as well. Both of my wifes grandmothers passed a few years back in the same year - the one I knew very well was a very sweet woman. At the end, she was puking up her own shit from cancer and getting backed up. A horrendous way to go.

I hope one of my family members can start the car in the garage and tube in the exhaust for me to huff if I am on the way out.

Gotta agree with you. This will be my only response, but IMHO I think that the family members just can't let go. A lot of times, we say that we "know how someone feels", but in all actuality we don't. In a way, it can sort of be a selfish act because we know that time is against us and the ones we love are going to die.

I have already told my family that if something were to happen to me, don't make me suffer...just end it

Hey Dr. Kavorkian, would you like a compassionate visitor to help end your suffering?

I'm sure he'll be able to end his own suffering if he wanted to.

Curt, did you ever catch the HBO movie starring Al Pacino, as Jack Kevorkian?
it was pretty entertaining. I just hope, that if I'm fortunate enough to make it too a nice ripe old age, and end up in a hospital bed wishing I were dead, someone would assist me and speed up the process.

Dr. Hannibal Lector might do just fine in this role. Too bad he's a fabrication.
