democracy on the american way :)

    'This is real democracy'

I was presenting the news on Al Jazeera English on Tuesday, as Binyamin Netanyahu was speaking to the US congress in Washington, DC.
We carried the whole speech live, and did a good job, I thought, of presenting a rounded analysis of the content and the implications of Netanyahu's hard-line approach. (And I am still always amazed at how the Israeli press is so much better at critiquing Netanyahu than are the US media.)
Anyway, within the overwhelmingly partisan chamber there was, rather unexpectedly, a heckler. We didn't get to see her, barely even heard her yell "stop the occupation" before she was dragged away.
The cameras remained fixed on Netanyahu and the proud legions of American legislators stood to applaud his stoicism and, it seemed, the men who forcibly removed her.
Netanyahu seamlessly incorporated the moment into his overall narrative:
I take it as a badge of honour [...] that in our free societies you can have protests... you can't have protests in the farcical parliaments in Tehran or Tripoli. This is real democracy!
Out of curiosity I thought I would try to find out what happened to that woman. Not many in the mainstream media bothered to pursue the issue, but it turned out that her name is Rae Abileah, she is a Jewish Israeli activist, and she ended up in hospital and under arrest.
I wonder if this is what Netanyahu meant when he was waxing lyrical about freedom.

Yes in a democratic society we treat our protestors for injuries before locking them away for mere hours, where as in places like Iran, North Korea, China, etc they will toss you into a cell bloody and naked for years..... Do you deny this?

How did Benazir Bhutto fair when she stood up against oppression by the Muslim right wing male chauvinists?
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

    Muslim Nation Kills Protesters

Iranian hardliners attempts to resist the biggest uprising in decades seemed to be crumbling today after popular pressure forced officials to announce a recount of the country's disputed presidential election.
Massive rallies in Tehran on Monday saw tens of thousands defy a ban to take to the streets to protest the declaring of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad as the winner of Friday's election over the more moderate Mir Hosein Mousavi.

Today the Iranian regime seemed to be reversing its position which had been to declare Ahmadinejad the winner by a landslide. The aftermath of Monday's massive rallies, said to be the biggest since the Iranian revolution, was reported to have left seven people dead, with further rallies expected today as the challenge to the Iranian regime intensified.
The powerful guardian council announced it was ready to hold a recount in areas disputed by opposition candidates. No detail of the scope of the recount and who would carry it out were available.

The guardian council was reported to have said that a recount may lead to changes in the votes recorded for the candidates.

Iran's post-election political unrest saw seven people killed in clashes between supporters of the defeated presidential candidate, Mousavi, and militiamen loyal to the hardline incumbent, Ahmadinejad, state radio reported this morning.

According to the report, seven people were killed as shooting erupted after a group at the protest "tried to attack a military location" last night, in western Tehran.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.
