I lost my inheritance to the doomsday prophet!

I lost my inheritance to the doomsday prophet!

    By Blake Ellis
    June 01, 2011: 10:54 AM EDT

When the world didn't end on May 21, many people who had given up their earthly possessions were left with nothing.

But one believer never lived to see the day. She left nearly her entire estate -- around $300,000 -- to the group behind the failed prediction, leaving some family members out in the cold.

Eileen Heuwetter was shocked to find out that her aunt left the majority of her estate to Family Radio, the group responsible for the doomsday warnings that the world would end on May 21.

She and her sister were each left $25,000 from their aunt's estate. The rest is going to Family Radio. The network of Christian radio stations based in Oakland, Ca., is almost entirely funded by donations.

According to IRS filings, the group brought in $18 million in contributions in 2009 alone. Heuwetter, the executor of the will, knew how much her aunt loved the radio station and admired its leader, Harold Camping, who is viewed as a prophet by many of his followers.

While other family members insisted it was crazy to let her aunt give all that money to a radio station, Heuwetter didn't initially contest the conditions of the will. She knew little about the Christian radio station, but knew her aunt, Doris Schmitt, found comfort in it.

Schmitt had lived a tough life, struggling with alcoholism and losing her two children to drug addictions before dying alone at 78 on May 2, 2010 in her small home in Queens, New York.

"This was not a woman who had anything. She literally had Family Radio on day and night -- she went to bed with it and woke up to it," said Heuwetter. "That was all she had."

It wasn't until recently that Heuwetter learned who was really getting her aunt's bequest.

She said she first realized this was the same group when she saw buses driving around New York City the weekend before the supposed end of the world, spreading the doomsday message.

"I'm looking at these brand new buses drive around with Family Radio's name on them, saying 'Doomsday is May 21', and I said, 'Oh my god, this is who my aunt gave all of her money to," Heuwetter said.

"I didn't know he was so crazy, and at this point I was incensed that this man was going to get everything my aunt had left." Even worse, Heuwetter said, his prediction never came to fruition.

Heuwetter's family members were just as angry when they learned about Family Radio's failed prophecy, so they brought the case to several lawyers, who sympathized with the family, but agreed they had no case.

Family Radio did not respond to requests for comment. The estate is within weeks of closing, and Heuwetter knows it's a lost cause. "It's just so frustrating because I know there's nothing I can do about it -- this man is going to get hundreds of thousands of dollars from my aunt," she said. "And she wasn't a rich woman."

Though Camping later clarified that his prediction actually extends until October, many followers were disappointed when the rapture didn't happen on May 21.

Heuwetter said there is no way her aunt would have given the money to Family Radio, had she lived to see Camping's doomsday-gone-wrong. "She would have been devastated," Heuwetter said.

"Listening to him say things would be better in paradise made her feel better -- she totally believed she would leave this world on May 21, and she needed to believe that." If she were here to watch the world continue after May 21, she would have likely given her money to other family members, said Heuwetter.

"It was a good amount of money that would have helped a lot of people live better today -- but now it's not helping anyone."

CNNMoney staff reporter Annalyn Censky contributed to this report.

    Holy fack.

These people should be brought to trial and prosecuted.

Why the fuck can someone go to jail for yelling false bomb threats on plane,
Yet someone can go around parading that the world is ending and we're all gonna die.
And totally get away it, and MAKE MONEY OFF IT?

    Fuck those niggs.

Why in the world would people listen to a crack pot, warning them of end times, and get rid of all their wordly possessions.

When the phuqer that told you that shit doesn't get rid of his!

I disagree. The dumbasses who believe these loons should be committed or jailed. If one is so stupid and gullible as to buy into this shit, he/she should not be allowed to live among the rest of society.

    $18 million in contributions
And just think, our government protects these type of money scammers but then they spend millions going after the international scammers that get away with around $20,000 a year.

It's these bible thumping, JESUS FREAKS! This is what happens when you throw everything out the window for some stupid religious radio station, and I don't feel bad for any of them.

If your folks believed in it, and donated your inheritance money to this organization, I bet you'd care then.

It's hard to imagine how in this modern age, people are still gripping onto an ancient belief that was conceived during a time when rain and lightning were inexplicable acts. Today's basic 4th graders have a deeper understanding of biology, math, aging, disease, lifecycles etc than the most informed human had back when this notion of higher-power started to spread to knowledge hungry minds.

It is in our nature to search for answers, but that doesn't mean the answers we've CREATED are the correct explanation of why and how we are here. A lot of people need emotional salvation and will cling to anything that gives them hope for a happy ending...a lot of other people are fully capable of dealing with life and keeping their morals in check without the bribe of a glorious after-life. The first group will always be targeted by opportunists who recognize an inability to think rationally.

A lost inheritance is nothing by comparison...the true loss is how many people have had their lives go by with their heads in the clouds.

    Tax the churches!
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

Their inheritance? You make it sound like they were entitled to that money. Did they earn it or somehow contribute to it? I doubt it. So why should they get anything. Hell they were only that woman's nieces, I'm sure she had other closer relatives or friends that would be more deserving. But even if this woman were crazy and believes in that crap its her money so she can donate it to who ever she wants to.

It should have been immediately obvious that something was up when Camping's radio show was still scheduled for Sunday the 22nd.

This is the sad truth. Just how fucking dumb can people be? Making life decisions based on religious belief is the epitome of stupid. They deserve to lose their money. And fuck those crybabies who lost their inheritance. They should make you own fucking money, and stop being little bitches. Inheritance is nice, but it isn't a right.

Fuck those doomsday religious crooks, but I don't think they broke the law. Every chuck in America preaches salvation and ask you to donate to the church to get it. The doomsday folks are no different than Joe Bob the small town Minister.

Why did a radio program provide such relief and attachment/importance for the woman?

Where was her family when the woman was making out her will?

Each received several thousand while the lion's share went to Camping and company.

    How often does that happen?

Seems like some open communication and/or familial support, love, and caring might have increased the amount of money set aside for the two ladies.

But the part I laughed about was when the one family member expressed her dismay over Camping's prediction not coming true. lulz

I'm looking at these brand new buses drive around with Family Radio's name on them, saying 'Doomsday is May 21', and I said, 'Oh my god, this is who my aunt gave all of her money to," Heuwetter said.
Like she was ticked about it. Wtf?

Otoh, people are victims of scams all the time. Shame if the aunt was "victimized," but the impression I get is of a lonely woman contributing monetarily to an organization that brought her comfort and companionship via their radio broadcasts.

Family Radio -- psychos/failed prophecy or not -- provided something of value to this woman and is being rewarded for it.

Notice how catholics make a big deal over over little shit like a women being able to be a priest and use contraceptives, but there is little or no outcry about fucking the children. Even the law doesn't hold them accountable.

I heard about tons of people that quit their jobs, gave all their possessions and money to this organization. How can people be so naive is totally beyond me.
