A good precedent. AL finally gets something right!

Finally, after 168 years of Democratic rule, the AL govt does something right. Ironic thing is, prior to the last election, the AL congress had been controlled by democrats since the Republicans freed the slaves after the civil war.

As a teacher, I see no problem with this. Maybe the I.N.S. should be allowed to check the student records. I'm sick of my tax dollars being wasted. We need to decide if illegal immigration is actually illegal in this country, because last time I checked, it is. Funny how many people act as if it's an affront to individual civil rights. If it's illegal, then the guilty should face the consequences of their actions and not be rewarded with a free education that they have no legal right to receive.

The ACLU is already all over this. But, their agenda is obvious and it will pass any legal scrutiny. If this you believe that this law or the AZ law is racist, then you basically have to believe that federal immigration law is also racist. The AL law goes a little further. But, for the most part, they are both just restatements of the existing federal immigration law that is not being enforced.

for those that believe what they see on tv, it's a good sell but it won't change anything for AL.

most states get the majority of funding for education from income and property taxes. AL only has 3 tax rates for income and is very near the bottom of the 50 states in terms of per capita income and household income and it ranks 50 in terms of lowest property taxes.

    must be the Mexicans fault....

Having taught on the border for a number of years, I'd have to disagree. Despite funding coming primarily from property and income taxes, undocumented students still cost a great deal to educate, and states like Alabama need to cut costs. Eliminating the students who have no right to a free education is a good start, and should actually cost very little. Even if it does not help with education funding, it is the right thing to do. I taught in AZ and Southern California, and the problem is monumental in these areas. We need to figure out where we stand on immigration and back up our laws, or they become meaningless. The situation as it is today does nothing but tell a gereration of kids that they can get something for nothing and that it pays to break the law and rip off the system. Government needs to give up the "war on drugs" and put the money into something useful. Give it up already; it is a war that can not be won. Enforce existing Immigration laws or wipe them off the books and open the floodgates.

the problem existed long before illegal immigration was a problem, before NAFTA. false prosperity created by the opening up of credit markets and the housing boom, etc. obviously made things go from bad to worst, not many would debate that.

Is it the "right" thing to do based on immigration laws of course. if implemented properly it wouldn't even cost that much, only need a secure portal to the uscis.gov website but I doubt it will be something that simple.

but you have to remember, illegal immigration isn't hurting the people at the top. Mexico is the 2nd largest trading partner with the US behind Canada and now the majority of manufacturing for the military complex is located there. based on the past, I don't see much changing in the future. one thing i do know for sure, there will never be any type of structure built, we now live in a world with out walls, it is all part of globalization.

I think you are right about the powers that be not being affected negatively by illegal immigration. Much like the issue of our failing educational system. It actually is in their best interest to keep a working populus who is generally uninformed and relatively ignorant. People who think for themselves and get a real education are much harder to control. Much easier to keep the supply of worker bees coming and keep them ignorant. The people who really run the show are not concerned with solving any of these problems to any real degree. Keep people dumb and happy with meager salaries and few benefits, so busy struggling to make ends meet that they hardly have time to think about the real truth of what is really going on. I must admit I'm getting more and more cynical about this country as the years progress.

    Hell yes!

No part of anything that American provides for its people should be open to illegals.
So many cries of inequality stem from one of group
of people doing little or nothing and then bitching
about another group that actually does something
    to improve their lives.

Why is this not standard operating procedure in every state anyway?
If sense were common, everyone would have it.

it wasn't an issue before but now state governments/budgets are broke from decreased tax receipts from high unemployment, low wages and property taxes and a loss of wealth from decreased home values.

what people are overlooking is that the illegals in the US that are employed send those monies earned back to family in mexico. a good majority of those monies are spent on goods manufactured and/or produced by american company's. so those monies eventually end up back in the hands of us corporation's. the tax laws between the US and Mexico are very confusing but from what I have found it's generally a flat tax imposed on profits made by US company's leaving mexico and going into the us.

so people should not be surprised why the "federal" government hasn't done anything about this, we all know who they work for. mexico has the world's 13th largest economy and has pretty large proven oil reserves.

all you have to do is follow the money...

Yep, always gonna defend illegal immigration. No surprise there.

We should be especially concerned about illegal immigration at a time when US unemployment is at its highest level since the first great depression. GWB used to defend illegal immigration for political reasons, much like the Obama admin does now, citing that Mexicans were doing the work that Americans won't do anymore. If it wasn't for illegal immigration, the "shovel ready" jobs that Obama promised, yet never materialized, might not even be necessary. The fact is, there are a hell of a lot of Americans that would take construction jobs, warehouse jobs, and other manual labor jobs, if they weren't having to compete with illegal aliens. Most contractors who are hiring workers for those jobs nowadays are exclusively hiring illegal aliens, because they are much cheaper.

I actually looked into some temporary work recently, after the tornadoes hit here in AL. I had a few weeks off before starting back to school. So, I was hoping to find some temp work. I called a few landscaping companies to see if they needed temporary help cutting trees after the storms. I was told by two of them that they had plenty of help and "most of our workers are Spanish speaking." Anyone who says illegal immigration isn't hurting american workers is simply in denial. Elderly people, teenagers looking for part time work, and plenty of unemployed workers are being kept out of work precisely because of illegal aliens competing against them for jobs.

I'm not defending it you and many are just ignorant to many of the problems of this country that simply are not going away. everything revolves around money, that's all that matters to those at the top that run the MNE/TNE's, banks, the FRB, etc. they don't care about the people at the bottom of the social-economic ladder. they are the ones that run the country, not the POTUS he represents them.

I've followed the money trails to the company's in mexico and back to US corps, that's why I have come to terms with the problem and expect nothing from the government.

the last report out of the FRB that was released in March was 61 pages out of the whole document there was about 3-4 sentences that addressed unemployment and inflation.

I realize that the POTUS is not much more than a figure head. That's why he's now supporting many policies that he would have voted against when he was a Senator. It is interesting that as soon as NAFTA was passed, the floodgates opened and illegal immigration went wild, around 1997. But, it is what it is and it's not going to change.
