    handgun bans

    Leaders agree on handgun bans

More than 300 types of handguns will be banned from July next year under a new agreement between federal, state and territory leaders.

Prime Minister John Howard announced the crackdown today after meeting premiers and chief ministers in Canberra.

Under the new rules, handguns will be allowed only up to .38 calibre, while sporting shooters would be allowed guns of up to .45 calibre.

There will also be tighter measures to ban handguns with short barrels.

"This is a very important step to making the streets of Australia safer," Mr Howard told reporters.

He said state and federal governments would fund a buyback of handguns over the six months from July next year.

He refused to comment on the cost, but said the federal government would pay two-thirds of the cost, with the remainder to be paid for by the states.

Treasurer Peter Costello earlier estimated the cost of the buyback at between $100 million and $200 million.

"So it's quite a significant amount," Mr Costello told reporters.

Victorian Premier Steve Bracks said the decision would cut the number of handguns in Australia by at least 20 per cent.

"It is an important step for the nation and also a very important decision for Victoria," he said.

South Australian Premier Mike Rann said the leaders would have let down Australians if they had not reached today's agreement.

"We would have let down the people of Australia if we'd not cracked down on guns," Mr Rann said.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said every leader acted in the national interest.

"The people who will lose today are the criminals," Mr Beattie said.

Mr Howard said governments would introduce severe penalties, including jail terms, for people who continued to hold onto illegal guns.

i don't know how much a gun costs...but say it averages at 1000 dollars...that means there is around 300000 of those guns out there, not to mention the ones that will still be legal!!!

    Taking that a step further...
What kind of psycological/background check is done if you want to purchase a gun?
What tells the "controling board"(call it whatever you want)that you are not a raving lunatic, that you are not purchasing a weapon for the soul purpose of hurting somebody (you or another person).
A person with those "critarias"can ACT totally normal while purchasing a weapon and even passing the test for the license, call them a Jekell and Hyde.(everybody understands this analogy)
So now you have a licensed "raving lunatic"with a registered weapon,(but the goverment said he's ok)on the street like the Washington snipper.
Don't get me wrong,I'm not saying that ALL weapon users are ALL raving lunatics, but there needs to be a better gun control system.
Max,I'm saying this for you,so you don't think, that I think you are a raving lunatic, simply because you own a gun and do some practise shooting.
    I'M NOT SAYING THAT!!!!!

That is what makes me think twice about having less rules, regulations for gun owners.
Make it harder for those lunatics to procure themselves weapons.
You may say I'm a Canadian and that is our mentality, but I say look at the famillies of the victims from the Washington area snipper, ask them what they think of gun control...

I'm all for more stringent gun laws.

Those are my views and do not expect everybody
    to agree with me...

    Just my two cents.

God I hate getting into these debates but I can't stay away.

Dero, you're absolutely correct in that the Washington sniper was/is a raving lunatic. (Maybe not a clinical diagnosis but my opinion anyway.) Two very important points you're missing are:

#1 He did NOT legally purchase his gun from a licensed firearms dealer. He borrowed/stole it from an acquaintance. It's been said so many times it's starting to sound cliche but I wish people would start listening for a change, GUN LAWS DON'T STOP CRIMINALS! Gun laws only stop people who are pre-disposed to obeying the law in the first place and they aren't the people who are using guns to committ crimes. In simplistic terms, gun laws do NOTHING!

#2 How many crimes were committed in the U.S. that involved guns? How many in Canada? How many in Australia? Don't know? Maybe not but it's sure easy enough to find out, right? Any and every new media outlet will be more than happy to give you those numbers. Now, try to find out how many crimes were PREVENTED when a law-abiding citizen used a legally obtained firearm to defend themselves. You'll play hell trying to get a straight answer to THAT question. Just as a note of info, the numbers of crimes in the U.S. that are prevented by private citizens with legal firearms is estimated to outnumber crimes committed with firearms by 10 to 1. Anybody that doesn't want to own a firearm has my full support and respect for their decision, but please respect my decision to own one also.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???

this needs to be re-written for the current century:

    Amendment II
A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
We no longer have militias, therefore people do not need guns.

We may not have militias, but we also don't have a 1:10 ratio of cops to civilians either. I defy anyone to take my guns away from me!

Tell me something. Would you just sit there and allow some A-hole to rape your wife until the cops came or would you try to do something about it? A gun is a tool that you use to do something about it.

I've got my trusty alu baseball bat in the car/under the bed,
a very small yet sharp-teethed dog,
and 9 years of shootfighting under my belt ..

I'd like to see that. Anyone trying to use their bare hands is at a huge disadvantage. Suppose he had a knife. Would you know how to defend against it? 99% of all assaults are committed with some kind of weapon. I choose to fight fire with fire and not get that close to them.

We do not need to rewrite this. And we do have militia's. Most every state has one. The people in these are the ones that will protect you when the government takes your guns! Our forefathers were years ahead of their time. Most people do not realize how smart they were and what they invisioned. It is just as prevelent today as it was over 200 years ago! And Albob is correct. We have thousands and thousands of gun laws on the books which don't get enforced!! We just create new laws to make people feel good and make them think your doing something good! I know for a fact that it doesn't help. LEts enforce the ones we have against the ones intent on breaking the law. Lam, I think everyone should be a member of the NRA! I am! If it was not for them, I'm afraid we would not have guns.
