I've not seen it b/c I don't watch TV, but yes, it's scare - for those who screw up abroad. Seems to be almost always drug smuggling.

Living in South East Asia, I read about this in the news about every 6 weeks. Someone flying into Bangkok with ecstacy pills, or smuggling out Heroin.

Going to a Thai prison for life, or 20 or 30 years.

The average life expectancy in a Thai prison is 11 years.

To get protein, you have to harvest cockroaches, mash them up and eat them for the protein.

    No joke.

There will always naiive, greedy, and foolish people to act as drub mules.

The Bali 9 is a perfect example. 9 Australians in the early 20, and one or two were 19 years old, smuggling Heroin into Indonesia on flights from Australia.

The death sentence was publicly known. They strapped Heroin (taped it) to their bodies.

Doh! I think 2 or 3 have received death sentence, the rest are serving life and one guy got 20 years.

    It ain't worth it.....

I don't know why the short life expectancy.

There is a book out that is semi-famous in South East Asia. It's called The Damage Done and it's written by a man who spent many years in a Thai prison. The King pardoned him a few years ago and he is back in Australia. Some harsh stories. He smuggled drugs quite a few times and eventually got caught.

and i dont see giving somebody the death penalty for smuggling, especially a first time offender. i've fucked up so much in my life i would have been death 3 or 4 times already, lulz.
In Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore you can get the death penalty for smuggling over a minimum amount.

If a foreigner gets caught, they usually do not execute them, except for Singapore. Locals, get the death penalty.

In Vietnam, when you go to death row you just wait. One day, you get a knock on the cell door, and they take you out to the firing squad. It's always published in the newspaper as a way of saying "be good."

Life expectancy in SE Asian prisons is based on people who have no money.

If u have money, its like the bangkok hilton overlooking the water. I love SE Asia/Asia, lived many years there and back again next month, u can buy ur way out of or into anything!
Tell people there, that its almost impossible to bribe police in sydney, their first question "why? australian police dont like money?" the concept is impossible for them to understand lol

A guy I grew up around, and I worked for his brother's business, is currently locked up in Thailand for attempting to smuggle narcotics out of the country. He's been in for close to a year now and goes on trial in June. He's facing 30 years minimum death maximum.

Would you believe my High School yearbook my senior year has me as Most Likely to be in a South American prison in 15 years. Luckily they didn't say SE Asian cause I did a lot of bad shit there...
Coarse edged youth, the irish pendants string from their smiles
not yet plucked as to slacken the seams
and drag down the features of age,
no folds or creases from unkempt wear
    eyes of tranquilty, crystalline-beads
no sign of despair in their hair, nor their hearts
but oh they have yet to be experienced and that makes aging so very worth it...ML circa2012

nope not just the prison population. many country's in SE Asia have high tariffs on anything imported, it's their major source of revenue from taxes. tariffs so high it makes importing the item not feasible for most.

one of my ex-gf's is doing some volunteer work in Sri Lanka and has been there for a good 1.5 years...I can't send her shit and the selections of foods that they have is well, not much of a "selection"...

Well let's see... they only feed you rice with salt in Thai prison. You share a 12' x 12' cell with like 70 other inmates. You do the math.

Sad case. I suppose it may be in the Bankok Post. Sometimes these cases are not. Ouch.
