BlackBerry maker RIM lays off 10% of workforce

BlackBerry maker RIM lays off 10% of workforce

    By David Goldman
    July 25, 2011: 08:49 AM EDT

Research In Motion, the maker of BlackBerry devices, said Monday that it would cut more than 2,000 jobs as part of a previously announced cost-cutting effort.

The Waterloo, Ontario-based company said the cuts amount to over 10% of its total workforce.

RIM's headcount will be reduced to about 17,000 after the pink slips are handed out this week. Shares of RIM fell more than 1% in premarket trading.

The company also announced new responsibilities for its top management "to create greater alignment of the organization."

The most major change was the retirement of chief operating officer Don Morrison, who left the company after having been on medical leave. He was replaced by Thorsten Heins.

For several quarters, analysts' calls for a management overhaul have grown louder. Many believe the company's dual-CEO model, headed by Jim Balsillie and Mike Laziridis, is inefficient.

RIM's CEOs blasted back against talk of an executive shakeup last month, arguing that they are the right men to steer the company back on track.

RIM was once the leader of the smartphone market in North America, but sales have been waning recently as many other device makers have introduced devices with broader appeal.

The latest, greatest BlackBerry smartphone, the Torch, is nearly a year old -- an eon in the fast-paced mobile device market.

Meanwhile, Apple and Google are now outselling the former heavyweight.

Very disappointing sales of BlackBerry smartphones and its PlayBook tablets during the last quarter led RIM to cut its full-year profit expectations by 30% last month. As a result, RIM announced in June that it would begin a program to "streamline operations," which would include layoffs.

RIM said the job cuts were focused on "eliminating redundancies and reallocating resources to focus on areas that offer the highest growth opportunities."

Last month, the company said that one of those growth areas is QNX, the new operating system that powers the PlayBook tablet.

RIM said its forthcoming operating system, BlackBerry OS 7, is also a core focus. BB7 will enable a slew of sexy, high-end product launches across the globe that some analysts hope will lift the company out of its current funk. But the release of BB7 has been delayed until late August at the earliest. That means the majority of the company's sales in the meantime have been -- and will be for the near term -- made up of cheaper, lower-end devices.

They need a huge change, they just keep grinding on fumes of the smartphone boom. This is one step in the right direction, there has to be several more to even things out tho.

If they took a step back from hardware and focused on software, what really MADE them boom, they would see things pick back up.

all these smart phones are total nightmares for IT security experts, all my clients in healthcare simply dread having to integrate them into the networks.

I used BB phones for years. Just got a Thunderbolt, RIM is way behind the times.
It is taking a bit to get used to the new OS but I like the advanced features.

Rimm is supposedly taking the next step in technology in the next few months but it may be too late. Their stock has dropped so much as of late

Exactly. Although there is a need for that, there is so much more profit to be made. Best example is apple with the iPhone, great for business but also for entertainment as well

Once RIMM started giving nation states (outside the US, UK, and Canada) access to their encryption keys (and thus access to users communications) their corp clients starting looking elsewhere.

For personal use, Blackberry phones are no longer cool. Two years ago, they were all the rage. Now iPhone is what's in. RIMM squandered a lot of good will by not evolving its phone experience. For example, there is no comparison between the browser on the Blackberry Curve/Tour to the one on the iPhone. The Blackberry wouldn't even load most websites properly. Email was great and so was the full keyboard. In hindsight, everything else absolutely sucked.

I feel like RIMM also lost a lot of good will with their apps. Most app developers were going with the iPhone. They should have adopted a coding system that made it extremely easy for app developers to convert their iPhone apps to the Blackberry. No developer wants to have to make the same app twice.

Exactly.. They have bb messenger but you need other bb's to use it. I just think that with all of these other phones coming out and new technology that was being put in them, they should have put more focus into coming out with a similar product.

people are either into technology or not, but a lot buy the latest toy just to keep up with the Jones's. most people don't utilize all the bells, whistles and gadgets on these new phones. they are big sellers for the younger generations. half my buddies don't even email but that seems to be more like a blue collar- white collar thing.

I'm an old school BB fan but I'm also smart enough to know Droid phones are kicking both RIMM and iPhone ass. Over 300 types of phones run the free Droid platform world wide, while only iPhones run that shitty Apple OS. Apple is quickly turning into a Microsoft.

Not only on phones but look at all of the iPad clones.. There's now like 15 different kinds and 13 of them use the droid software. I personally don't have a problem with apple OS but a lot of people prefer the droid

I'll take Apple's OS over anything by MS, but Google was smart in handing out free development software for the Droid platform in return making money on ad clicks. Droid is going to rule the tablet and smart phone world in the next 2 years....maybe less.
