Norway killer Anders Breivik carried out slaughter pumped up on steroids and listening to X Factor anthem

The right-wing fanatic listened to rousing violin anthem Lux Aeterna by Brit Clint Mansell on maximum volume on his iPod as he lived out his horrific 90-minute death spree.

Yesterday more than 150,000 came to Oslo for a vigil for the victims of the deluded murderer, who detonated a bomb in the capital two hours before his isle attack killing eight and wounding dozens.

Joined by grief-stricken Crown Princess Mette-Marit, the crowds came in a show of defiance as much as in mourning, almost all holding flowers and almost all with tears in their eyes.

Each was headed to one of many memorials in the city, adding their gift to mass floral tributes.

There were similar scenes across the country, which at noon fell silent for a minute’s reflection. In London, David Cameron signed a book of condolence at the Norwegian Embassy.

As the sombre day unfolded, more shocking details emerged of how the monster who shattered the country’s peace prepared for massacre.

Talking about his favourite song in a diatribe posted online hours before the attack, Breivik wrote he would play the “incredibly powerful song” on repeat to ignite the “passionate rage” within him.

“I will put my iPod on max volume as a tool to suppress fear,” he wrote.

The stirring song is used at the beginning of BGT as the judges walk out on to stage and has also featured heavily at various stages of The X Factor. Breivik said it and a cocktail of steroids and stimulant enphedrine would turn him into “an extremely focused and deadly force, a one-man-army,” adding the track will increase “my aggressiveness, physical performance and mental focus”.

A version of it was used in a battle in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and is the opening for Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday.

Lux Aeterna means “eternal light” and Breivik said he wants his extremist conservative movement, European Federation to use the song as its anthem.

He added: “I’ve listened to this track several hundred times and I never seem to get tired of it. It is very inspiring and invokes a type of passionate rage within you. In Lord of the Rings, a good version of this track (Requiem for a Tower version which I think is the best) is performed during the most intense fighting of one of the central battles.

“Since it has worked for me, it is likely that it will work for you. An invigorating piece of art.”

Inspired by his chosen anthem, Breivik launched the deadly attack using a semi-automatic Ruger Mini 14 rifle to gun down his victims in cold blood. Yesterday, it was discovered that the twisted 32-year-old may have laced the dum-dum bullets he had bought for the gun with poisonous pure nicotine.

Sick Breivik wanted wounded victims to die later from the deadly poison.

Breivik had practised using the rifle at a shooting range run by Oslo Gun Club and was able to pick off his victims from distance even as they swam out into the lake surrounding Utoya Island.

The gun was legally registered to him and he had added a lightweight folding stock and a sensitive trigger for rapid fire.

He was also equipped with a Glock pistol which he used to execute close-range targets. Breivik also owns a pump action shotgun and a .308 bolt-action rifle, the same calibre as an AK47.

Yesterday, Norway struggled to reconcile the brutal details of his plan with the emerging picture of his normal early life.

Photographs were released of the him as an angel-faced boy among other ordinary children, as class photos from Smestad School show an apparently contented student at seven, 11 and 13.

Other snaps show Breivik as a teen in religious robes and later partying with friends and having fun with girls.

Another picture surfaced of suited Breivik at a family Christmas Eve party in 2005, looking relaxed at a table full of empty wine glasses.

It also emerged that when he was only just into his teens, he began pumping iron and confiding in friends he wanted to be rich and famous.

By his early 20s, the middle-class son of a wealthy diplomat had however lost a small fortune on doomed stocks and shares investments – a reputed two million krona, equivalent to about £220,000. Yesterday it transpired that vain Breivik had plastic surgery in a desperate bid to attract a girlfriend – but it failed miserably.

The part-time model travelled to the USA in his early 20s for work on his nose, chin and forehead.

One friend said: “He was very satisfied with the results. He said now he had had his face fixed, it would help him get a girl, but I never saw him with one.”

Breivik – who had sunbed sessions and applied make-up before his pre-slaughter photo-shoot – certainly had no luck when he met five Swedish blondes at the Norwegian ski resort of Hemsedal in January 2005.

With two pals, the weirdo shared drinks with the Scandinavian beauties – and he even got a kiss from one for a photograph.

One blonde said: “We were about 18 years old. We met the Norwegian boys at a party where we talked and drank beer. We moved to another bar and continued. The Norwegians were boasting about parties in Oslo, and how it was better than in Stockholm. We had great fun.

“At the end of the night they tried it on, but we were not interested like that.”

A family – who recommended Breivik for membership at his local Masonic lodge – said: “He was a polite man and always very well dressed.

“We cannot understand why he did this because this is not the way he was brought up. He looked after his mother and she was dependent on him.”

But despite his normal upbringing, the fanatic ultimately snapped and became hellbent on murder.

Experts say the lethal dum-dum bullets he used to inflict maximum pain on victims during his killing spree are a major indicator of his need for extreme violence.

Dr Colin Poole, head of surgery at Ringriket Hospital in Honefoss north-west of Oslo, said surgeons treating 16 gunshot victims have recovered no full bullets.

“These bullets more or less exploded inside the body,” Poole said. “It’s caused us all kinds of extra problems in dealing with the wounds they cause, with very strange trajectories.”

It also emerged that the killer ordered pure nicotine from China to put into the tips of the bullets.

In his diary marked October-November 2010, Breivik wrote: “I’ve now ordered 50 ml, 99% pure liquid nicotine from a Chinese online supplier. 3-4 drops will be injected in hollow point rifle bullets, which will effectively turn it into a lethal chemical weapon.”

He also recommended that his followers play video game Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to hone their shooting skills.

In his detailed manifesto, Breivik says he has managed to familiarise himself with “high speed target acquisition” in relation to the recoil by firing one round at a time.

He warns against “spraying” with the Ruger 14 which he says “is more or less impossible to accurately hit a target”.

He adds: “Just ensure that you familiarise yourself with the recoil in relation to swift target acquisition and you will be prepared.”

On the application form for a gun licence, Breivik stated that he wanted the rifle for hunting deer, but in his diary at the time he wrote a sick joke…

“It would have been tempting to just write the truth; ‘executing category A and B cultural Marxists/multiculturalist traitors’ just to see their reaction.”

That is an awesome fucking piece of music. If I had killing to do, I would chose the same piece. I can't even listen to that song very long or the evil side of my mind starts to take over. I'd also throw in Carmina Burana - O Fortuna. I don't even need a motive with those two pieces of music, just hearing them makes me want to kill.
