    Where to stay in Vegas

So this is going to be my first time going to Vegas. There is a badass hard rock music festival scheduled for October that I wanted to see. I've wanted to see a few of these bands and I've always wanted to go to Vegas. Killing two birds with one stone.

Here's my question. I'm trying to stay close to the venu which is at Luxor Festival grounds. So I figured I could stay at:

    The Luxor
    Mandalay Bay
    Excalibur
    New York New York
    Monte Carlo
    Tropicana

I've always heard not to worry about getting a cool room cause you won't even be in it that much. But obviously I don't want somewhere shitty to stay. I'd rather save some money for drinks and gambling if I could so I'm not looking to break the bank on a room. What's my best option?

Ive always had good luck with last minute sell offs. You dont get to pick and choose but like you say you arent going to hang out in the room anyway. You can usually get a killer deal on sites like expedia, or sell off vacattions.com. I havent used them for vegas but I have for Mexico and the deals are insane!

I stayed at the Luxor about 4 years ago. It was more than nice and was a good deal. Pretty much its just like you said, you wont be in the room that much at all so it just comes down to how much you wanna spend. Most of the hotels have nice websites where you can just click book now and they will show you a calender with the price for every different night. I think we paid 60 for night then 75 for the next. or you can use the Hotwire type sites for good deals also. I have gotten freat flight rates that way.

    The buffet's are AWESOME!!

Just make sure you have some cash cause nothing is cheap there except for drinks when you sit down in the casino. My gf is there right now for a work trip, said her sandwich, drink and chips was $18 bucks. She sent me a pic last night of one of the buffets, fucking ridiculous.
Back when we went, we would hit up the buffetts about 20-30 minutes before the lunch buffett ended and load up on everything. Then eat all the goodness and wait for them to restock the dinner buffett with all different stuff and pay the lunch price which is a good bit cheaper.

anywhere but the Excalibur that please is so fucking cheesy! and the rooms are beat up and smoky... the 2nd worst on that list is the Trop.

no problems at any of the others

I'm leaning towards the luxor. I've found some pretty good deals there and haven't heard many bad things.

LAM is right on about the Excaliber. Don't even bother there. I don't think the Tropicana is all that bad. Yeah, it's showing it's age but, I've always found it to be clean and hospitable.

If you stay on the Strip you're gonna pay, that's all there is to it. So just pick whichever one looks best. If the venue is the Luxor, stay at the Luxor. Even if it costs a couple extra $$$ per night, the convenience is worth it.

Now if you really need to pinch pennies, look at some of the off-Strip hotels. They're less expensive simply because they're not on the Strip.

IMO Luxor, Mandalay or NY NY.

    Reminds me of a story:

I was on a bachelor party back in '99 and we stayed at the Luxor. After coming in from clubbing at 5am, 3 of us hopped up on this wall on the front side of the Luxor and watched the sun come up over the desert while we were rolling balls. Fucking incredible.

You can't go wrong with either. I've never stayed at the Luxor but I've been there plenty of times. Mandalay bay is awesome though

Only 1 place to stay if the buffet is important. Circus Circus.

then that is you list. NYNY is the most central and you can walk the most from that location. Mandalay Bay is on the south end of the strip so you have to take a taxi from there.

the less you spend on taxi's the more you can on having fun, IMO...

Being on the strip near the train/tram thing is convenient.

I said at the Luxor once, it was pretty nice.

On a more important note, the girls serving on the casino floor next door in Mandalay Bay are hotter. Much, much hotter. Just saying.

No gym for home, work out floor with 30, but is it for 20 like 30 lb when you no lift it to be for men, for 30 lbs instead? or half is 10 for 20 pounds?

If you like food, try the Orleans. The buffet is awesome and if you like to play Texas Hold-em, they have a really nice poker room. Its just across the freeway from the strip and easy to get to the Luxar by car, taxi, or free shuttle.
The Orleans offers free shuttle service to its sister property the Gold Coast Hotel and Casino as well as the Las Vegas strip. The shuttle operates 7 days a week from 9:00 AM to 12:30 AM and picks up guests approximately every 30 - 45 minutes from the hotel's Tropicana Avenue entrance. The last shuttle will leave Bill's Gambling Hall at 12:30 AM. Coast Casinos hotel guests will receive priority seating on all shuttles.
I have relatives in Vegas and this is the hotel we all use when we visit.

for a place off the strip the Orleans is the bomb. you never know what they could have at that place, boxing, dirt bikes, circus, etc. it's a kick-ass venue. one of my buddies used to win big there playing black jack all the time late night. almost a handful of $30K nights out the door

You can't go wrong getting the trolley for the strip either. I believe it's $12/ 24 hours of unlimited use and it's well well worth it, or at least I though so

^^^^ Because cabs are a fuggin rip off.

Also, if you fly in and plan on taking a cab to the hotel, they have limos available at the airport where you would get a cab and you literally can take limo for $5-10 more than you can take a cab. Why roll in a smelly minivan with worn out struts when you can take a limo?

IMO the last good decade Vegas had was the 90's (probably peaked in the 80's). After 9/11 Vegas tried to reinvent itself into becoming a family destination like Disney/Orlando. Kids everywhere in a sinful town. Not to mention post 9/11, every mofo you would make eye contact with had his hand out for a tip regardless of if he did anything for you.

I remember me and my dad went to Vegas October 2001 and there were 11 people on our DAL 767 and once we got to Vegas there was barely a soul there. That particular trip was fun because every employee was super friendly and accommodating.

The young accounting Jews destroyed Vegas.

That was a grand experiment gone horribly wrong. They've since learned their lesson and gone back to catering to adults. Notice the most recent, highly successful ad campaign, "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas."

I flew to Vegas from San Jose in Oct '2001 for a bachelor party myself and all my pussy ass buddies from PA were scared to fly out to Vegas. Only like 8 out of 30 people showed up. Vegas was a ghost town for a good 2 months after 9-11.

Why would anyone want to go to Vegas and eat at a buffet? They have some of the worlds best cooks, kitchens and restaurants in the world!!!!!! Don't skimp out Sloppy! haha.

Mandalay Bay would be the best place out of your choices, hands down (even though it's at the end of town). If at all possible, stay at Caesars Palace. The place is unbelievably gorgeous and they have the sickest shops in their mall. I travel to Vegas about 2 times a year, so let me know if you need some good places to hang out at!!!

luxor and excaliber are both fairly cheap to stay and there right next to each other, otherwise the best places to stay are the hard rock or the palms

You're going to Vegas, huh? Here's a tip for you and all the other IM members here. If this works out for you, this'll be the best advice you receive for the trip.
Las Vegas Hotels: How To Get Hotel Room Upgrades - scroll down, look at the upgrade rate and click the names to see reviews of how people did it
Our Users Greatest Hits | Front Desk Tip

Be nice with the clerk, and slip them a $20 or $50 wrapped around your ID and ask if they have any special rooms available. Read the above and see how it's done, you have to be very particular about it. I've had friends get amazing suites worth hundreds of dollars more that are usually comped to high rollers because they were nice with the desk clerks, made small talk, and tipped them a little. I'm talking marble bathroom and 50" flatscreen suites here.
