Hundreds of foreign students on a State Department cultural exchange visa program walked off their factory jobs in protest on Wednesday.
The J-1 visa program brings foreign students to the country to work for two months and learn English, and was designed in part to fill seasonal tourism jobs at resorts and seaside towns. The 400 students employed at a Pennsylvania factory that makes Hershey's candies told The New York Times that even though they make $8.35 an hour, their rent and program fees are deducted from their paychecks, leaving them with less money than they spent to get the visas and travel to the country in the first place.
Some of the students were assigned night shifts, and said they were pressured to work faster and faster on the factory lines.
Hershey's said they didn't hire the students when the Times asked:
A spokesman for Hershey's, Kirk Saville, said the chocolate company did not directly operate the Palmyra packing plant, which is managed by a company called Exel. A spokeswoman for Exel said it had found the student workers through another staffing company.
Last December, the AP revealed that federal immigration officials were investigating two human-trafficking abuse cases related to J-1 visas. Strip clubs openly solicited J-1 visa holders in job listings, and some foreign students told the AP they were forced into sexual slavery when their passports were confiscated by a ring of criminals. About 150,000 J-1 visas were given out in 2008. Businesses save about 8 percent by using a foreign worker because of Social Security and other taxes they do not have to pay.

Damn near everyone of you missed the big picture.
First off, the staffing companies are running a scam that essentially brings foreigners into the country to work shit jobs that pay less than what their total expenses are. Essentially, the staffing companies are acting as a proverbial pimp that traps these workers. The staffing companies pocket as much of the worker's money as possible.
It really doesn't have anything to do with the government. It may not even have anything to do with Hershey's. Hershey's is probably paying the staffing company a descent amount of money for each worker, but the workers never see it. I looked up the story, but couldn't find how much Hershey's paid to the staffing company. I also cant; find out who the staffing company is which should be a critical fucking component to this story.

Hershey knows exactly what they are doing...the 3rd party is noting but BS trying to remove "responsibility" from Hershey. it's one of the oldest and most obvious tricks in the book..."we didn't know"...bullshit excuse
if you read the stuff that I posted it explains more about the "lack" of effort on Hershey to identify problems with child labor in it's cocoa supply chain...instead they increased monies for advertising
Hershey has been around since the late 1800's they know exactly wtf they are doing...

Why is it that this is so obvious to a bunch of foreigners but Americans put up with this every day?
There is a collective mentality that any work is better than no work, and that you should thank God you have a job at all and stop bitching. I noticed this three days into my old job at Burlington Coat Factory. There were people working there that started working when the minimum wage was 6$ and some change and had only got a raise when min. wage was moved up to 7.25. Then I get hired and start out getting paid 7.25, which was the same amount as people that had worked there 5 years!
Every morning there would be a staff meeting and every day like they would say something like "it's hard times but we have to be thankful we have a job". Right after saying that they would read the sales numbers and compare them to the same date the year before, guess what, they were up drastically almost every day.
By my 6th month working there I had assumed the responsibilities of an assistant manager's position in the receiving department, when the manager was out I was the one in charge of handling paper work and making sure everything ran smoothly. They never gave me an official title because they didn't wanna have to pay me more and they made sure they never gave me more than 36 hours a week so i wouldn't count as full-time employee.
Finally I said fuck it, my whole check went towards paying for daycare for my son and gas to get to work. I was lucky if I had 15 bucks left by the end of the week. When I decided that I would be better of going to school and save me the daycare costs, people damn near lost their minds. I heard things like " you don't know how lucky you are to have a job right now" and "Men are suppose to be working". When I did the math for people and show them I made 0 dollars working there, they still felt the same way. The company had pounded into their heads that they should feel lucky the company even let them stay and work that shitty job for 7 bucks an hour and if they left their life would be ruined and they would be nothing but deadbeats.
here is a little math
144 (the most hours a non-manager would get a month if they were lucky)x7.25= 1044
1044-650 (cheap rent)= 394
394-400 (food for 2-3 people for 1 month)=-6
-gas
-daycare
-heating/electricity
-water bill
And they should feel lucky? the stockroom I worked in was hard labor, every truck loaded and unloaded by hand and breaks were short if any at all.
Then people wonder why folks stay on welfare.
Almost everyone i talked to there had been in school at one point but when they company found out, their schedule would magically change to the exact times when they were suppose to be in class. This happened to almost every single person that had been in school while working there. They would literally post your new schedule 2 days before its first day so there was no way in hell for you to plan anything more than a couple days in advance. And yeah, no sick days, no personal days off, nothing what so ever if you weren't a manager.
This is how screwed up the company is. During christmas, they have what they call a "coat drive". Thats where people can leave their old coats in a bin by the front door as donations to people that need it. While people gave a coat at the front, we in the back were cutting up brand new "defected" coats and throwing them in the dumpster. The reason we had to cut them up was so homeless people wouldn't come and get them out of the dumpster.
company got a tax break for the charity work and a tax write-off for the "Defected items".
Here is a picture I took one of the days we had to do this.

the national IQ based on PISA scores ranks the US in the lower 25% of the OECD.
the growth of gross domestic product per capita can be derived as a linear function of the percentage of people with an IQ above 105 and its underlying frequency of a hypothetical major gene of intelligence.
in the US the average IQ is 98

I have to find the study but I read a good one months ago where the IQ was measured (in the early teen years) from children that had diets of highly processed foods from the ages of 3-7 vs those with healthy diets in the same time span. the children with the processed foods diets had significantly decreased IQ's and there was no reversal in this even when the diet was changed at age 7 to a much healthier diet. the children with the healthy diets from ages 3-7 had marked increases in IQ.
the old saying you are what you eat rings true in so many ways..
