Damsil in distress.... Happen to come across you guys while searching for some answers. I have a 1995 3/4 ton chev desiel suburban. Drivin it from the day it was born. Bad thing happened yesterday when the termostate stuck and I over heated it. Thought it was all under control, cuz I thought I managed to keep the temp down below the red. Today I find out I blew a head gasket. Up here in Canada they want a couple grand to fix it, I love this truck. So now I'm wondering do I fix it and keep it? Are there going to be other problems with that engine later if I do? Should I fix it and trade it or drag it to the dealership the way it is? What do you guys know?
Two grand to swap out a head gasket??? That's highway robbery!!!![]()
IF, and that's a huge IF, the head gasket is the only thing wrong with the engine you shouldn't have to pay more than $400 or $500. Now, the problem is, when an engine is over heated it can cause problems that aren't that easy to see. If it were me, I'd get it up and running for the least amount of money possible and drive it straight to a dealership and trade it in. You get a new car and the dealership gets your old problem.![]()

Diesel mechanics do hold their time at a premium. If the engine starts and runs but gets hot fast then your valves probably survived. A compression check would help somewhat if the guy doing the work can tell from a bad valve and a bad gasket. However, no honest mechanic would repair that head gasket with out checking the head for cracks and or being warped. If the head is cracked I'd replace it, if it is warped it needs to be resurfaced. A complete head re-work on that motor would run $800 to $1500 depending on whether you need a replacement head or not. That engine otherwise would outlast any gas motor around by double if you keep it serviced. You never told us the millage. With 200,000 plus millage if payments are not an issue for you than Albob is dead on. If payments ARE an issue then you need and honest mechanic. Just MHO.Originally Posted by Alice
