I've been harping about this a long time. I'm glad the chinese system rammed the fundamentals down my throat so that when it came to experimentation as a chemist I wasn't playing catch up. I came to America just in time for my scientific eduction, but the article doesn't address the fact that these rich chinese are funding international private schools in china that have the western influence. ( I know because I have toured these schools and been offered a teaching position) . These guys still get the fundamentals very well, ( calculus by 9th and 10th grade) and the innovative approach of the west....they will be unstoppable. Now on our end, get our americans up to speed on the fundamentals, because lots and lots of research positions are being lost to foreign educated like myself because many americans don't want to ( because scientific research positions don't pay as much as CEOs or malpractice lawyers) or cannot do the high level science and mathmatics ( I've never understood the american propaganda that calculus level mathmatics cannot be taught earlier than college or AP classes)....
also, it's not just that the shool system teaches by rote, some of our subjects were less "rote" than some american studies ( social studies etc.) but the tiger mom mentality is dangerous. The traditional chinese upbringing where a child is not allowed to fail produces kids who cannot be innovative, since innovation is creative failure that later produces a novel, untried way of doing something, and you can't always succeed at it the first time around.
