He was, but then her sold out. He hasn't been funny for over a decade. It was pretty sad, too. He was both me and my brother's favorite comedian growing up.

    Anything specific?

The Dr. Dolittle, Nutty Professor, Shrek movies?

Fwiw, I don't consider him a sell-out. He's a comedian making bank. He could be in kitchen cleanser commercials and I'd be cheering him on.

Well, first of all, Eddie Murphy Raw was the last stand-up he did which was in 1987. This was when he peaked, in my opinion. He did about 4 or 5 really good movies around that time like coming to America and Harlem Nights. Harlem Nights is the funniest black comedy ever made, by the way.

Then around the earlier 90s, he started to go downhill doing low budget corny movies. By the mid 90s, rather than try to rebound is comedy career, he sold out and went the family film route with stupid shit Dr Doolittle and
    Shrek.

Too bad the "Raw" Eddie couldn't do this gig. He'll do okay, I guess. But that soft soap show will not let him perform at his best. This will sadly be just another boring Oscars.

I can see him now in his fat suit from the "Nutty Professor", " I'm fattered"!

Richard Pryor thought so. He even said in his stand-up that he didn't understand why people liked the movies, because he thought they sucked. I thought that was cool that Richard just told it like he saw it. Also, Pryor kept doing hardcore stand-up even when he was doing to goofy family flicks, so he was just exploring all avenues.

I cut Rich a lot of slack, because he had a lot of coke to buy. I'm sure he needed all the money he could get.

    He spent those checks, though.

Coke-snorting hyprocite > Comedian who doesn't explain his actions

    Got it.

But, seriously, both men serve as examples of entertainers—sell-outs or not—who have brought a lot of joy to their fans lives.

I was a fan of him in the eighties, then he decided to make his extreme racism towards white people known publicly, since then I cannot stand the guy.

I don't take away anything Eddie did. He was great. He was so great that it hurts me to see what he has become. Richard stayed funny until the day he died. I haven't heard Eddie say anything funny in over a decade.

I love Eddie, his stand-up is always something I think of, and listen to far too often. I have also enjoyed his movies, but I agree some of his family-type films have been subpar to his talent. The greatest disappointment I have in him is that he keeps saying he will get back on tour, but hasn't; and this, is what I find, makes him a sellout. Touring isn't easy, new city every night, being away from friends and family, but shit if you're gonna tell us you will go back on tour, damn well do it.

Til then, I will just have to settle for Chris Rock

Eddie Murphy has sucked for a while now. The last funny thing he did was get caught with that trannie in his car.

I was sitting in the waiting room this morning while my car was getting repaired. The View started and Barbara Walters nominated Whoopi to host the Oscars. Whoopi said that the only way she would was if Billy came back. Funny how things line up in a matter of hours.

Billy Crystal Alludes to Hosting Oscars in Tweet | XFINITY TV News

    Billy Crystal to Host Oscars

    by Joel Keller
    Nov 10th, 2011 | 5:10 PM | Comments 0

UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter got confirmation on this from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Looks like Billy Crystal will be the host of the 84th Oscars, replacing the departed Eddie Murphy.
PREVIOUSLY: In the “what are we supposed to make of this?” department, this tweet came across our screens from none other than Mr. Oscars himself, Billy Crystal:
“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up my prescriptions. Looking forward to the show.”
It’s pretty cryptic, but it gives us something to talk about, doesn’t it? Does this mean that new Oscars producer Brian Grazer and the academy have gone the nostalgic route to replace Eddie Murphy? It certainly seems that way, if you believe Crystal’s Twitter feed.

In addition, academy president Tom Sherak indicated to The Wrap that Crystal is a fine pick as host by implication, responding to their question about Crystal by saying “Bob Hope did the Oscars to his sixties.” Deadline says that the veteran comedian is in talks to host the show. Finally, for more evidence, let’s not forget that Crystal told an audience over the summer that he’s “itching” to do the show again.
Stay tuned. This is getting pretty interesting…

Murphy is out for the Oscars.

Funny that you posted his gay comic standup.

“I appreciate how Eddie feels about losing his creative partner, Brett Ratner, and we all wish him well,” Academy president Tom Sherak said.
Ratner, who directed Murphy in “Tower Heist,” resigned from the Oscars on Tuesday after coming under fire for using an anti-gay slur at “Tower Heist” screening.

i remember an interview with murphy where he talked about wanting to do movies his kids could see. how is sticking to your values despite the public's opinions and desires being a sell out?

Whether it's a actor, band, singer, or comedian, talented people grow up and change their style. It's not necessarily selling out. It could be trying a new style, it could be mellowing out, or it could be not wanting to have their children see them as they used to be.

As for fans, some will go along for the ride, and some will be disappointed with the new style.

Personally, I don't think Murphy sold out, but I don't find him funny anymore. I guess because I'm not a child, I am not in his target audience for movies these days.

I believe that his most recent movie geared towards adults was "Norbit," and that was a steaming pile of shit. "Tower Heist" looks promising, though.

Sounds good out loud, but I call bullshit. He was already starting to do shittier movies before his kids came along, and he was getting busted with tranny hookers after his first was born. Does a person who humiliates their wife and family sound like the same kind of person who gives a damn about making family friendly movies for their children to watch?

I think not. It doesn't matter anyway, because everything said in this thread is irrelevant except for one thing: is he still funny? Not to me. I think he is lame as hell.
