That plane looked ridiculously badass when the boosters fire off. Too bad the pilots broke the place.

They had JATOs on C-130s back in the Viet Nam days, why couldn't they make it work 20 years later?

Granted at the time it was amazing something was put together that quickly, it would be a waste of money now. There is no need with the Osprey to build a specially modified C-130. I am all for making sure we have the best outfitted military in the world but lately things are just out of hand, especially the Air Force. Don't get me started on the F-22 and F-35 when nothing even touches what the F-15, made in the 1970s, can still do. End rant/ very cool video though, thanks for posting!

yes but the Osprey has none of the firepower that the AC-130 has today

AC-130 and C-130 are quite different but you are correct it does not; apples to oranges LAM. The AC-130 is the meanest SOB out there, gun camera footage from it is redonkulous!!!

As an F-15 tech for 23 year I can tell you without a doubt, they need to be replaced. I agree with you that their technology is still the best in the world but, they're OOOOOOLD. It's costing more now to keep them flying that it will to replace them. And if we're going to replace them anyway, why not use the latest technology available?

affordability...which is why they won't be replaced for a while still

Those platforms are used in combat (unlike the Hercs which are transport)...which means they are susceptible to SAMs. Even with countermeasures like flares, chaffe, and DIRCM, they fact is those planes have the radar cross section of a baseball stadium and are not as mission ready as they used to be back in the 70s.

They'll award the modernized plan after the tanker production line from Boeing gets hot and heavy...that will allow for maximum economies of scale for the DoD.
