many people are just tuning into the political and economic scene since the banking collapse. a good percentage of the population was under the impression that the economy was "good" before then but not even close. the US economy has been literally sputtering along for a good 30 years it hasn't been good for a long time. this is why many of the "fixes" that people think are appropriate are not as they showed up far too late in the game and are ill-prepared. if a person doesn't know how and when the problems started they are not going to be able to think up logical solutions. kind of like changing a fuse in your car to fix a bad cylinder.
different areas are effected more/less and sooner/later from things like outsourcing of IT jobs, manufacturing, etc. 80% of the US population lives in the metro area and the rest live in the non-metro (rural). it's basically like living in 2 different worlds.

if Obama doesn't get reelected it could pretty much be a wrap for the middle class. given the pattern of economic policy out of the GOP in the past 40 years they will continue to make the economy worst with more supply-side tax cuts that only benefit those at the top with further increases wage inequality and deregulation of the finance sector which was one of the main causes of the banking collapse. this is all they did in the 80's, early 90's and 2000's. top-down grants only make the economy worst never better.
