Joel Edgerton In Talks For Lead Role In 300: Battle Of Artemisia

Joel Edgerton In Talks For Lead Role In 300: Battle Of Artemisia

Word is that the Aussie actor most recently seen in The Thing is up for the role of Themistocles in the 300 sequel. Vulture have the details..

Joel Edgerton made a big impact with his excellent performance in Warrior and after impressing with his supporting turn in The Thing prequel might be on his way to securing his first major lead role and in a CBM while he's at it. Vulture report the following..

Insiders tell Vulture that the studio is entering into talks with Aussie Joel Edgerton (Warrior, Animal Kingdom) to star in 300: Battle of Artemisia, the sequel to the studio's super-stylized 2006 hit. (Noam Murro, who last made the very anti-action flick Smart People, is set to direct; original 300 director Zack Snyder is co-writing the script based on Frank Miller's upcoming graphic-novel sequel.)

They say Edgerton would play Themistocles, the General who led the Greeks to victory against the invading Persians in 480 BCE. As they point out, the story is actually yet to be completed by FrankMiller but some plot details are known. The story is said to take place about 10 years before the original 300 and focus on Xerses and his quest for godhood after the death of his father. There have also been hints that there may be small roles for both GerardButler and Lena Headey who played King Leonidas and Queen Gorgo in the original.

Battle Of Artemisium Producer Says Movie Is Not A Prequel OR Sequel to 300

Battle Of Artemisium Producer Says Movie Is Not A Prequel OR Sequel to 300

So what is it? While speaking to Collider about various movie projects including Immortals , Producer Mark Canton discusses the current state of Noam Murrow's follow up to ZackSnyder's 300..
In the below video interview Producer Mark Canton discusses some upcoming movies such as Immortals, Piranha 3DD and Emperor with Collider. It's all very interesting stuff but what caught my eye was his description of the currently in development follow up to Zack Snyder's 300 which he describes as neither a prequel nor a sequel. Ok, but we know that the story will focus on RodrigoSantoro's character Xerxes who was involved in the battle of Thermopylae. So unless that character can be in two places at once the follow up must happen either before or after the events of 300, thus making it either a prequel or a sequel? I guess he must mean that it won't be a direct continuation or prologue to the story told in 300. Anyway, you can listen to what he has to say around the 10 min mark or check out the highlights below.

Canton says it's "in process". He says the screenplay by Zack Snyder and Kirk Johnson is "absolutely awesome" and they are hoping to get moving on the project with WB and Legendary soon. He then says that the movie is "not a sequel or a prequel", insisting that it is simply "another story in the 300 universe". He then says it is likely that we will see some characters from the original 300 return.

It was recently revealed that the title to this movie would most likely be 300: Battle Of Artemisium, a slight alteration from the original "Battle Of Artemisia". Here we have a synopsis..

Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) is somewhat pushed into the bloody battle with the Greeks by the gold-covered maven goddess Artemisia. Artemisia, witnessing just how much his father King Darius’s death has affected him, persuades Xerxes – with her “vindictive charm” – to go into battle against those responsible.

Artemisia tells Xerxes that he has no choice but to avenge his father’s death and has to man up before becoming king. So, he sets off to become a God because that’s the only way he can win the battle.

Artemisia, on her hunt for a group of men to join Xerxes in the battle against the Greeks, doesn’t stop at brainwashing Xerxes. She also manages to convince Themistocles (the character “Animal Kingdom” star Joel Edgerton is in talks to play) to side with her somewhat. Though the Persians took his family, and he’s spent ten years training the Greeks for battle, Artemisia has such an allure about her that the muscly Greek is taken. Ultimately, she convinces him that his life will be better off if he swaps sides. But this guy’s also as good a liar as he is a fighter.

Variety are reporting that we finally have some solid casting news for the follow up to 300. It seems Xerxes, the villain from 300, will be played by Sullivan Stapleton, who we will see next in a supporting role in Gangster Squad alongside Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin..

"Animal Kingdom" thesp Sullivan Stapleton is in final negotiations to star in the untitled "300" follow-up from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures. Noam Murro is helming, with Kurt Johnstad and Zack Snyder penning the script with plot details being kept under wraps.

Stapelton has received high praise for his performance in Australian crime drama Animal Kingdom. We had heard that the 300 spin-off would be called "Xerxes", then "300: The Battle of Artemisia", but reports indicate that it is still untitled. It's Deadline who are reporting that it's Xerxes that Stapleton will be playing. The character was previously played by Rodrigo Santoro.
