all language (written and spoken) is inherently flawed as words are merely abstracts of reality which means they must first be interpreted before their meaning can be applied in the real world. that being the case words at best are approximations of shared meanings, all language therefore is subject to the korzybski principle (see general semantics theory). some words are also extremely subjective such as short & tall, poor & rich, etc. the words rich & poor in the US would certainly have different meaning than if used by someone that lives in a 2nd or 3rd world country. just as short and tall have different meanings if used by someone from the netherlands or south east asia.
then when you factor in life experiences, age, and other factors, etc. this further adds to to the problem of interpreting and applying words in reality. the fact that supreme court rulings are almost never unanimous is proof positive of this.
general semantics is why we all see communication problems between people constantly in our daily lives and especially when dealing with others from other country's. this is simply one of those problems that can never be solved, it is impossible.

historical events are what shape the future, they are not to be discounted just because they are in the past (this is exactly how history is allowed to repeat itself).
the US of 2011 is not like the US of 1970, not even close. sure the US is still a great country in some ways but no so great in just as many others. just to name some major problems such as increasing poverty rate, rapidly shrinking middle class, sky high healthy care and education and debt to income ratios to match.
the US was once a great country's in more ways than it was not a world leader across the board, now except for category's in business, technology, etc. the US ranks just about average in the OECD and is steadily falling scholastically. this along with US imperialism is why the rest of the world no longer see's the US as a world leader, that view is only held highly in 3 out of the top 15 country's as was stated in a recent WPO opinion report. this is why other country's are moving away from the dollar as a sole reserve currency along with US history of having a high frequency of recessions and economic bubble and burst cycles. having a non-us based currency reduces their exposure to this along with reducing costs for exchange rates, etc.
the US has the most highly developed mass media outlets in the world. western programing is seen all over the world and conversely there is an utter lack of foreign media available in the US with the exception of what is Internet based, the reasons for this are blindingly obvious. I probably get less than 10% of my information from US media outlets with the exception of data from US gov and state agency's. we live in the same country but get all of our information from completely different sources. I also do not watch main stream tv network programming except for Family Guy and the Simpsons sunday evenings. So I have minimal exposure to the US propaganda machine. I learned my lesson after what I "learned" from tv in 88-89 as it was not what I saw firsthand in the Iraq in '90 and other places in central and south america after that.

Doesn't matter the generations, I go back to the Mayflower and it doesn't matter to me I was born and raised here, what matters to me is where all of my ancestors are buried and that's not here. Speaking for myself, I wouldn't have done what my ancestors did no matter how bad Britain was. If they truly believed in Live Free or Die they would have died there. Ask yourself if you were 5th generation in China or India would you call yourself Chinese or Hindu even though you had none of their blood in you?
Birds of a feather, flock together.
Considering the original "settlers" fled England in the 1600s, I can't honestly say what I would or wouldn't have done. I'd had to have been there to truely know.
As for your example of Chinese sure, why not? If I was born and raised to be a Chinaman, why wouldn't I call myself that? I was born and raised in the United States of American, therefore I call myself an American.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???
Yeah and the Indians came from Asia...the land belongs to whoever's willing (and more importantly, able) to kill and/or die for it...until they die or grow soft then it goes to someone else...ad nauseum.
I'm a broke ass beat down mofo most of the time so I don't care too much one way or the other...at least that's how I feel at the moment. But thank God I live in America because it's the best chance that people have to turn failure and risk into success. It's not a birthright, it's a fighting chance.
Well hello Mister Fancypants. Well, I've got news for you pal, you ain't leadin' but two things, right now: Jack and shit... and Jack left town.
You mean native Americans? Indians, who are from India, did come from Asia. Just had to throw a smart ass comment, even though it basically has no relevance to the discussion, in there to lighten the mood. Carry along with the debate.

DOMS, I'm disappointed in you. Palestine aka Canaan are not the Jews indigenous region, they came from Ur in Iraq. God ordered the Jews to commit genocide on the Canaanites for their promised land and their failure to do so led to their demise and also the book Mein Kempf where Hitler refers to them as the Canaanite Jew. Oh and I wasn't being pro-palestine, just using a modern term for the region that includes Lebanon.

There is an amazing account of all the nations and their characteristics in Genesis Ch. 9. It only interests me because of the date it was written and it's accuracy throughout world history. Biblically the America's are part of Asia and as we learned the Native Americans migrated from Asia but they also include the people of the Middle East under the name Shem, hence the word anti-semitic. Then you have the African people under the name Ham, whose son brings the curse of slavery for his slanderous mouth, nothing seems to change. Interesting Kanye and JayZ have a new song HAM, they know. Then you have the Europeans under Japheth who are the explorers and travelers. Everyone has their place and for those of use that value history and heritage America is not ours unless you belong to a tribe. There's also an interesting prophecy in the Old and New Testament about Gog and Magog that sound an awful lot like Russia and China destroying Israel and the US. Who knows, just sayin.

Well there were Canaanites and there were Philistines like in the story of Samson and Delila, hey the first bodybuilder, but yeah I think Palestine refers to Philistines who were there before the Hebrews who migrated from Iraq to Armenia before settling in Canaan. I think they even went back to Armenia to get wives for the 12 tribes because they didnt want to mix.
BTW it's not something that's too hard to discover when the whole migration is documented in the Bible, that even Muslims accept the first part of.

Bodybuilder...? I don't think so. He was buff, had long hair, and used to grapple. He was one crazy outfit away from being a Pro Wrestler.
The data just isn't there.I find it suspicious that it was discovered after the right with the Israelis started.
- Genesis 11:31
Terah took his son Abram, his grandson Lot son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, the wife of his son Abram, and together they set out from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to Canaan. But when they came to Harran, they settled there.

Not to mention, ex-p I think was in on this discussion as well, so biblical evidence may not be the best thing to rest the argument on (I believe it but I won't use it to argue with non-believers).
It's like trying to convince a Trekkie that a Star Destroyer could defeat the Enterprise...no one can win that argument (without resorting to murder).
My vote's with the f'in Star Destroyer ffs.
edit: okay so ex-p was never in here though I swear I've seen him everywhere lately....but he and his atheist friends could show up any second...

It doesn't matter how you find the pot of gold, so long as you beat the leprechauns.
TJTJ is fictional character and purely theoretical.
