I was going to say that it was probably a phony SEAL until they said, "A navy spokesman confirmed that the sailor had completed his SEAL training last week and was assigned to a West Coast-based team this week."

Doesn't 22 seem impressively young to be a SEAL? They run 6 miles on average at a 6 minute mile pace or better.

Yep, he was probably assigned to either team 1 or 4. They're the newbie graduates. Team 2, 3, 5, 6 and special ops teams. 22 is young, sounds like he knew someone to get ushered in as quick as possible. Who knows, though? Even if that's the case, he still completed the training. That's comendable in itself. You said it well..22 is "impressively" young.

not at all. most guys that go to BUDs are straight out of A school and haven't even been to the fleet yet and are non-college grades so they are usually less than 22 but in-between 18-25. you see the older guys that are in the late 20's and early 30's (E-6's) and up in teams like ST6, Delta and other elite CIA units, etc.

There are 8 SEAL teams. 4 on the East Coast, 4 on the West Coast. Also, they utilize a SEAL VDT (vehicle delivery team) Essentially making a total of 9 teams. I believe you can't be older than 28 to apply for the SEAL training.

Yes, you can apply at 18, but the success rate isn't as high for recruits who are in their mid-20's. The mental maturity is typically the deciding factor. Even at 22 yo, very impressive.

On the mental maturity scale, where does shooting yourself rate?

Yeah, that's definately something a 22 yr old would do.

But, if you wanna act like Phil Spector, shoot the woman in the head you're trying to impress.

I would have been 19 out of BUD/S if I hadn't had to drop out of Pre-BUD/S in A-School due to walking pneumonia.

I was 21 and the oldest in my class before I dropped, those cold water swims did me in. the oldest guys in the SF in the Navy are usually the CO's and they are typically O-4/O-5s and avg age about 30.

My pre-buds instructors had us doing swims in the freezing cold great lakes waters during November with around 40 degree temps. Only a couple hundred yards with fins. That didn't get me though. It was the working out on my own and walking back to the BEQ from the gym with sweat wet hair in the snow coupled with overtraining that got me sick....

It's just sad that someone that young and with that much potential would do something so stupid after all of the training he received. I grieve for his parents, poor family.

Lots of running, swimming and high rep weight lifting for stamina. I did a lot of leg lifts, scissors, chin-ups and push-ups whenever I had sparetime. I would walk home from school 12 miles 3 days a week my senior year even though I had a truck. The best thing for me was that I had a physically challenging job my last 2 years of Highschool where I pushed 40-80 metal shopping carts at a time 50yards up a 15 degree slope 8-12 hours a day 4 times a week. It was like pushing a car uphill several times a day. I also played every sport I could my senior year. Ironman football, basketball, baseball, track, golf, etc. by the time I got into the Navy my endurance was way up there.

I also did a lot of bag work punching and kicking, no matter how tired I was I did a good half hour beating on my heavy bag....

Did you ever get the chance to try out again? If you knew that you wouldn't have made it what would you have done differently?

I was in college and training (well trying out) for the '88 olympics for TKD. I was already running track in college so I really couldn't have been in any better shape than I was. I was a sprinter and jumper so long runs weren't my forte but manageable.

No the CO of my first duty station said I was too valuable to let me go and try for BUD/S, being a Radioman and with so few in the fleet at the time plus more than half of the older guys were 2-3 years from retirement. Thats one of the main reasons I didn't re-enlist because I'd gotten my hopes up of being in SEALs and then my dreams were dashed, plus the fact that with so many short timers all the shit work fell on my shoulders. It just made my first 4 years hell and like a prison sentence. Then catastrophe hit my family when my step-dad was murdered my Mom became suicidal I started drinking heavily and playing with psychedelics which made me realize I wanted to be a writer more than anything in the world.

If I could go back I would have rested more and not over-trained like I did. Also I'd have showered and dried off at the gym instead of walking around with wet hair in the snow risking getting sick like I did.

I'd also would've done longer distance runs and swims well before I got to bootcamp. I wasn't dying on the 6 mile runs or the 500 yard swims like some of the guys, but if I had trained to go 1 1/2 times or even twice those distances it would have made the seem like cakewalks.... I'd also have invested in a weight vest for my runs and a pair of swim fins. Took me a while to get used to swimming with fins when I tried. Other than that my underwater work was top notch because I'd always loved swimming underwater. My dad said when he first taught me to swim at 3 or 4 I took to going underwater like a fish. He said I would dive right into the pool and just swim around for over a minute and my mom would panic thinking I was going to drown. I love being underwater.

So many cries of inequality stem from one of group

about another group that actually does something
