It was actually almost German. That's what a good chunk of our founding fathers wanted, so I say we make switch now.

It should be Spanish since the majority of America speaks it, ie Central, and South Americas, which includes three islands in the Caribbean and of course North America which i believe, correct me if im wrong, Spanish is the second most spoken language here. Not including Canada of course.

America is the short-hand for a citizen from the United States of America.

In the same way that German is shot-hand for a citizen of the Federal Republic of Germany. Or do you call them Federal Republic of Germanians?

ehhh, I'm with OP in this one. Any immigrant (legal or illegal) who resides in USA should make a effort to learn american English for their own benefit.

I find this confusing. Republicans are trying hard to test this woman's English skill to allow her to run for an elected office.

Stopping right there I want to make clear I think everyone is the USA should know English.

However, Republicans are all about not making more laws to encroach upon our freedoms. Yet one of the most basic, important, and taken for granted rights we have is the right to vote. If the majority of people vote for someone to represent them in government, like it or not, that's who they voted for.

You may make the argument that one should understand what is being said and talked about or they cannot really be trusted to do the "right" thing and I would have to agree with you. Many other great arguments can be made as well. I would likely agree with most if not all of them.

One thing I never acquiesce to though is not honoring the people. If they are SO STUPID as to elect someone then that should be what they get. Far to many have given their time, limbs and lives fighting for our right to be stupid not to honor that.

After all it's not like the majority of people in this country even understand their rights. Care about their rights. Are willing to stand up for their rights. Willing to die for their rights. Are not so spoiled as to even know that their rights are fought and paid for by the blood of hero's.

Most people here on IM seem to be much more aware of reality than the average person in this country regardless of their political beliefs. So what should it be? Honor the public will (vote) or not?

I for one say OH HOLY CRUD we are in deep s*** this country has become so stupid. If you don't believe me just look at the last two presidents. The people elect the worst that the republicans have to offer then go right off the deep end and elect the worst that the democrats have to offer.

Don't forget this fact as well...we let our government get so out of hand that corporations are now the real people and power here. Human beings are nothing more than workers to serve the corporations.

How did we get so messed up? Someone running for office that doesn't understand English, corporations are people, pizza is a vegetable, steroids are the evilest of all drugs, and oh umm I guess I have gone on long enough.

Hey at least John Huntsman says people are not corporations. I think Ron Paul thinks the same thing as well. (I am not sure) But because we are so stupid as a people neither one of them has any chance to be elected.

The reason for the law in Arizona is that they're doing whatever they can to stop the influx of Mexicans. If you get some shitty Mexican that got amnesty (in California), hasn't bothered to actually learns the language, and is being voted in by other Mexicans that got amnesty, this is how you stop it.

I was born in sad diego, ca. Sad Diego because of all the illigal's as well as some other things. I only recently moved to the mid west. I lived 35 minutes away from Tijuana for most of my life. I remember the illegals ever since I was a child. Funny thing is that most illegals back then were very hard working nice people. For some time now that has not been the case. They have somehow gotten the idea that they are entitled to anything they want and work is something they don't feel they need to do. You know, like the work of getting into the US the right way.

I grew up in LA, but I've lived in places that were 98% or more white. I saw the wave of Mexicans come in and ruin the places. They turn them from first-world cities into third-world cities.

I actually have heard the same thing. A family friend is an American, but comes from a mexican family and he works on a huge strawberry farm as the cook. he has noted a significant change in the type of mexicans that come here to work. He says that all of the older ones are incredibly respectful and hard working. But, the younger generation is a bunch of gangster wannabes that don't want to work.

The other route is to simply not give amnesty...then no illegal immigrants will be voting; therefore, the chance of a non english speaker winning any election is very very low.

I'm just not a fan of forced English by legislation or legal mandate. Its already forced socially really...unless you agree to be restricted to only work in unskilled labor forever. This elected official won't even be able to make vote or understand what is going on in the debate....she won't understand what motions are going on, what the rules of the forum are...ie she'll just get walked all over and be forced to be wall flower with no influence on the board.

That should come as no surprise. GWB was sucking Vinvente Fox's cock when he was pres. I wouldn't expect the next POTUS to do any differently. I'm not a conspiracy nut. But, I'm wondering if there may be something to the rumor of a North Amrican Union. I can't help but notice that as soon as NAFTA was passed, my hometown of Bham, AL was flooded overnite with Mexicans, 90% of them most likely illegal. It was around '97 and there was a huge exodus of illegals all through the southern states. It does seem that there's more going on than free trade.
