Beastie Boys, De La Soul, Digable Planets, Pharcyde, Aesop Rock, PM Dawn, Tribe Called Quest. I like some of the new stuff Kid Cudi, Lupe Fiasco, N.E.R.D..... Wu-Tang is probably the only hardcore hiphop I can dig. I like some old school gangsta rap just for the nostalgic value of having grown up with it, but I'm more into the positive more humorous and witty stuff, with great wordplay and more poetic....

Slayer are my favorite rap band!

Okay, I was being a smart-ass, but Kerry King (Slayer's guitar player) did play on a couple of Beastie Boy tracks.

I find the early 90's "gangsta" rap very boring. However, I find the current main stream rap mostly talentless and shallow. Drake is a really good rapper, his problem is over-exposure.
I live in the south which is not the best place for hip hop scholars, the "dirty" south rap bullshit is cancer to the industry with the exeption of a few. My playlist will contain neither 90's Ice Cube nor will it contain Lil wayne. Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Brother Ali, Murs, Strong Arm steady, Jay z, Eminem, J Cole, to name a few, would all make it on my ipod if I had one.

That's not accurate at all, all the rappers I mentioned (the ones I would put on my playlist) have been known for exactly that.

Social commentary was hip-hop back in the days, whole point of hip-hop is to express whats going on within the minorities. Todays hip hop has been destroyed by loud electronic beats and mercenary type lyrics. Rappers you've mentioned are mostly underground rappers ( OLD school rappers) in addition there is no new blood doing the social commentary now in hip-hop.
    Main stream hip-hop is Garbage.

i prefer old school hip, it doenst have to be gangster rap. Back then the mosic had soul, it had a message or a story behind it. Old school nas is the shit stuff liket that. Also today there are many many great hip hop artists, some who tell stories, some who speak a message and some who are just lyrical insane and some who do all three. I like j cole, cassidy, papoose, joey jihad much more underground. guys who realease more mixtapes then albums stuff for the streets and real hip hop lovers. 99% of the time if it plays on the radio i dont listen. Point blank

Sir, your statement was (look at highlighted), you didn't say mainstream rap, in which case, I almost completely agree with you.
However ,none of the rappers I mentioned would be considered old school rappers, the "old school" refers to the earliest wave of rappers (late 70's-mid 80's) . As a matter of fact, Run-DMC are considered to mark the end of the old school.

J cole, Eminem, Jay z, and arguably Mos Def (with his recorded billboard success) are not underground rappers.

And yes there are new rappers that talk about social issues, J cole being one.

If you dig no deeper than what they play for you in the media, everything will look watered down. Do some research.

so are 99% of rappers in the beginning, every rapper is underground before being discovered.... He has been signed with Jay Z since 09' at which point it would have been very hard to consider him underground.

And just to be an asshole about it, social commentary will always present itself in Art, music especially. The rappers rapping about cars and chains and becoming successful by doing so, tells the listener ALOT about the society of which they pander to. society today revolves exactly around that, material possessions. So if you ask me, today's commercial hip hop is pretty damn accurate in their presentation of the minority group mentality.

If you travel to places where material things matter less, you will usually find little interest in commercial hip hop.
