    Anyone have a Macbook Pro?

So both of my laptops finally crapped out. My 6 year old dell XPS hard drive went out finally and my 3 year old Compaq's battery is shot. I only paid 350 for the compaq and they want half of that for a battery.

I'm tired of buying a new laptop every 2-3 years because they start to fail. I want something that is a quality piece. All of the PC's I saw were over $1000. I've kinda always wanted a Mac and I figured now is the time.

I have about a year left of school and will be using it for that. I will take it to class to take notes on so battery life is important to me. I will be typing papers and presentations on it so that is also important to me. We have Mac's at the college so I don't think there will be too many software/compatability issues.

I'm looking at the 15" MacBook Pro with the 500gig hard drive.

IMHO, 13" is what I use and is very portable. I know someone who has a 15" and wishes they had a 13".

I have the old version of Microsoft works, but compatibility issues have never been a problem.

Oh and battery life is freaking AWESOME!

    Definitely a good investment.

A couple people told me the 13" is where it's at. I could get the top end 13" model with 750gig hard drive and the 2.8ghz processor for 300 bucks less than the low end 15 with 500gig and 2.2ghz.

Ive got the macbook pro, I have watched countless friends laptops get endless viruses, and crash, plus they always seem to have a prob with their pc and have to call geek squad or take it to shop. I have been using this laptop for everything known to man, school, porn, streaming shows, movies, downloads etc lol for 6 years and just had to get the mother board replaced. Apple had it back to me in 3 days for 350$. So in 6 years one prob! I will never buy pc agian, but thats my experience.

This is all you need. All Apple refurbs have a 1 year no questions asked warranty, the only in the industry and they can run windows if you want as well.

    Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.7GHz dual-core Intel i7 - Apple Store (U.S.)

This one is a bad mofo and even if you have to get a new battery in a few years, Apple OS will not be out of date and to update it is only $30 at the most. I will never get another personal computer that is not apple, especially a laptop.

I need to get it locally or I'd jump on that refurb.

I did some research. The 15" model has a quad core instead of the 13's dual core. The 15 also has a much better graphics card than the 13. Looks like I'm going to pick up the 15" model tonight.

Now what accessories are a must for these? I'm thinking I need at least a case to carry it in.

Lol that's because your friends are retarded. Macs can get viruses just as easily. Invest in some free antivirus and malware software.

There's a ton of new Ultrabooks coming out Sloppy, they might be a cheaper alternative than the Macbook, which is always good for a student.

Mac are overpriced and old tech. They do offer some usability enhancements, but it's not worth the inflated price.

Also, going to a Mac significantly decreases your choice of programs and increases vendor lock-in.

I've always found it amusing that so many anti-governance people choose Macs.

I've got a Toshiba laptop now and it works great. My room-mate had a Mac-Book and his 8 year old kid spilled a soda on it and ruined everything, but the hard-drive. He has a Toshiba now too. They are nice, but way overpriced in my opinion.

I'm typing this from my new mac book actually. I bit the bullet after looking at other computers and talking to friends. So far I'm happy that I did. It seems very intuitive and really put together. The trackpad is sweet and I'm getting a hang of all of the commands. So far so good. Was it worth it? Probably not. But it's pretty fucking sick.

I just purchased a new laptop yesterday. (new slim-line HP) 13" and very sleek! I did so much research into purchasing a MAC, but what really turned me off was the fact that you're pretty much locked in to everything Apple. You can get an unbelievable laptop for the price of a low range MAC.

I've heard good and bad about MAC's, but the incredibly overpriced tag, the fact you're locked into Apple and their sponsors...just wasn't for me. I don't know about compatibility issues, but I've always loved HP's.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro and never had any problems with it. No matter what you do, it's always super simple to use. It's more money yeah but the better things in life usually are. I'll never go back to anything else.

I think a laptop should last a lot longer than that and I think you've had bad luck.

I bought an Acer 5670 in the Summer of 2006 and have used it everyday since. I've had it for 5 1/2 years.

I'll use it until it dies, then buy another Acer.

I don't know Macs but they are a lot more expensiive and mainly for people that make/create videos and musicians, IMO.

Don't forget the technology illiterate. They advertised all you have to do is take it out of the box, plug it in, and it was good to go. Because PC's are so hard to set up...

True. Here is the thing with Macs that many just refuse to accept. The hardware in the base models is better than what you get for the same price in a windows laptop. It is as simple as that and all the programs are written in 64bit and optimized for the hardware/OS X that is running on them. That is why a 3 or 4 year old Mac or Mac book can run the new OS Lion without issue even if it is just a Core Duo or Core 2 Duo with 2 GB of ram. Also, Apple was the only company besides Alienware and Asus to sell any laptops with ram that was over 1066mhz in the last 3-4 years, that is what makes the difference. And the system boards and processor speeds are all matched, again making them have no bottlenecks in the system (something so many PC makers just don't ever seem to get cause they are cheap as fuck). Sure, they aren't the fastest on the market but all that means is faster battery usage; don't hear too many complaining about 7 hours of batter life with that much processing power. Oh, and you can run Windows on it if you want the whole time and then there are no compatibility issues.

There are less of them and less viruses written for them. It is simple math but as Apple gains market share, there will be more risk. I would run a simple free virus software in the background to be safe but no one I know with macs has ever had a virus that shut them down to any extent.

Like Oufinny said, there's less out there but this doesn't mean its harder for people to target Macs. Most people are stupid and click on blatantly obviously suspicious links when surfing. Or use shit programs like FrostWire.

It's possible, but with macs the user has to enter their log in information for the program to even install. After that, there is a few screens and clicks the have to go through.

Windows, you just download, unzip and bam...infected.

Just be safe, don't click unknown links and if possible, avoid places like frostwire. Use a free antivirus like ClamXv

After almost one full week of use, I'm in love with it. So easy to use and so many more useful programs than a PC. The appstore is really cool. But so far my favorite thing is Garage Band. I can plug my computer into my half stack and model 1000's of different sounds with zero lag/latency. That alone would be over 2k worth of guitar equipment in order to run all of the modeling software and it came free on the mac.

After learning all of the keyboard shortcuts and getting rid of the windows mentality, I'm truly impressed with the mac. Got microsoft office for it and I've been taking it to class to take notes on. THe battery life is 7-9hrs depending on what you do.

If they were cheaper, they would blow - they'd be plastic pieces of shit.

MBP is a great laptop, I'm fine with the Air (13" 128SSD) for my needs, most of my data sits on a NAS box with 2 drives in it. Yes they are expensive, but they are damn fine pieces of machinery, and dual booting or VMWare with Winders is always an option (one I use).
