Hey Mmafiter (or anyone in the field)

I'm thinking of applying for a Correction Officer 1-2 job. It would be a minim security facility.

What do you like / dislike about it?

Cool

Ok....where to start?

First off, it's a really good paying job with security and a pension plan, so that is very nice. You have the ability to make a career out of it or you can simply remain where you are. You will work with alot of good staff and be exposed to an environment not too many people get to see. If your goal is to help someone, you may get the chance to do that, particularly in a minimum. There's more good stuff, i just can't think of it right now.

The bad. You will change. No matter how hard you try, the environment will get to you eventually and you will turn a little hard and bitter. Not so much in a minimum, cause it's basically daycare for adults. You are working with the scum of the earth. You will be spit at, assaulted, verbally abused (everyday), underappreciated, etc. Then your management team which usually consists of "yes" men and women, won't have the balls to make a decision on your behalf. You will be falsely accused of something eventually and you will be investigated. This is quite disheartening. It makes you angry to know that the inmates can make any idiotic allegation they want, and you will be investigated. We had one officer pulled over at a Tim Horton's, arrested and strip searched, because an inmate said he was bringing in drugs to the institution. He wasn't and now he has to live with the stigma and embarrassment of what happened.

Prison is a negative place, and if you don't have outside interests/friends you are in trouble. I see alot of officers who go to work, have a few beer with co-workers after work, where they talk about work, then a few of them are married to each other, so they go home, and talk about work. That's not good.

I don't want to disuade you, cause it is a good job, but it is also a difficult one. Some of the best advice I got when i first started was; "Just look at them as dollar signs walking by, don't let any of this crap get to you." I took that advice and it has kept me sane, sober, drug free, and alive.

If you want more, I can give you more. I didn't want to bore you.

from owning a toy store to correction officer...logical career step!!

Well, the inmates act like little children, so it's actually not that far of a stretch.

LOL, yeah its a change for sure, I've been in retail from high school till now (16 years) so I'm kind of looking for something "different".

My father started in corrections before I was born, he's in management now and is retiring next year, I asked him what he thought about me doing it to but he didn't have much to say, don't think he wants me to for the same reasons you gave, I remember him coming home in a bad mood the odd time or two.

Thanks for the info Mma

They must pay a lot more in Canada than they do in the US. In NC I think most prison's start out about 22k a year. You couldn't give me that job for that. But once you've been on the side of putting them in jail, I don't think you could work there.
