    Lawyers are the criminals

Two years ago my mom was working as an overnight clerk at a hotel. The hotel is owned by muslims who don't live in the area. One night, some (mexican) guy robbed the place. While he took the money he held her by her hair and then pushed her down when he ran out.

My mom begged them to add security cameras to the lobby, but they refused. Then it happened again two weeks later (by a white guy)! This time my mom was lightly stabbed, then hit over the head and knocked unconcious.

When she went back to work, no one apologized to her. No one gave her flowers or offered her a day off. Nothing. So she sued.

After two years, she settled out of court for $35,000. Her lawyer told her that she would be getting just over $8000 after the fees. Then the lawyer decided she would itemize her bill after the $8,000 leaving my mom with $2,300!!

Two years = $32,700 to the lawyers, $2,300 to the victim.

    WTF?

She should have researched the lawyers better, and also read the paperwork they gave her. I hate lawyers also, but this was her own fault. She also needs to file a complaint against this laywer, sounds like what was done is illegal.

Sounds like your mom is an idiot for not choosing a lawyer who would be paid via contingent fee.

And you know what? Quite frankly, people like your mom is what's wrong with this country's legal system.

You said it yourself. Your mom didn't sue because she was injured. Your mom sued because no one gave her flowers or apologized to her.

And quite frankly, unless this was a high crime area, I can't see how the employer can be liable. And if it was a high crime area, then why the fuck is your mom choosing to work the night shift? Why did she keep working there after the first assault?

Blame lawyers all you want, blame the system all you want, but the existence of people like your mom with no common sense is the real fucking problem.

edit: Oh, and adding security cameras wouldn't prevent an assault. It would just record the assault. Get your head out of your ass.

I'd gladly receive $2300 if my employer failed to give me some flowers with a card saying "sorry for getting robbed".
I love getting high, I hate getting low, and I like to drive my truck down a muddy dirt road.

I'm a great believer in luck and I find that the harder I work, the more I have of it.

that sucks big time man, glad she wasn't hurt seriously...nothing gets my blood boiling more than when a woman is victimized.

sadly I know more bad lawyers than good, but there's nothing any of us can do about that. I also used to install a decent amount of CCTV equipment and they are only a deterrent for a small percentage of would be "new" criminals, the habitual career criminal cares not about such things.

Report the lawyer to the state bar ASAP, even sue him. What he did was break ethical rules and did so in a BAD way. Lawyers are not suppose to take unreasonable fees and this, my friend, is very unreasonable.

Unless she signed a contract stating that the lawyer could take 90 %, she should seek her right.

There is likely more going on here. Many times settlement proceeds must repay a Workers' Comp lien or a Medicare lien.

People love to jump to conclusions without having all of the facts. This is not Fox News, people.
