AIR raid sirens have been heard over Central Baghdad, CNN and al-Jazeera television reported.
Reporters in Baghdad have reported large plumes of smoke and the smell of oil in the air.
A White House spokesman said action had begun. He read a one-line statement, saying: "Hostilities have begun." President Bush is expected to speak about 2.10pm (AEDT).

THE United States has launched its war against Iraq and President George W. Bush will address the US at 2.15pm (AEDT), the White House said.
Moments earlier, air raid sirens and anti-aircraft fire were heard over Central Baghdad.
In a two-line statement, White House spokesman Ari Fleisher said: "The opening stages of the disarmament of the Iraqi regime have begun."
Reporters in Baghdad reported large plumes of smoke and the smell of oil in the air.
