Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.), the ranking member of the Senate Budget Committee, said that as of the Friday jobs report, the number of people added to food stamp rolls after four years under President Obama's administration is 75 times higher than the net number of new jobs created.

"Simply put, the President's policies have not produced jobs," Sessions said. "During his time in office, 14.7 million people were added to the food stamp rolls. Over that same time, only 194,000 jobs were created ? thus 75 people went on food stamps for every one that found a job."

Sessions's numbers are based on the 133.56 million Americans that had jobs in January 2009, which grew to 133.76 million Americans with jobs as of October, a net gain of about 200,000. Friday's October jobs report said the economy added 171,000 jobs in October, and because more people were looking for work, the unemployment rate rose to 7.9 percent.

In contrast, Sessions said 31.98 million people were using food stamps in January 2009, and in July 2012, which is the latest data available, 46.68 million people were on food stamps. That's an increase of nearly 15 million new people using food stamps.

The October numbers are the last official snapshot of job growth in the economy before next Tuesday's election, and both Republicans and Democrats were looking to use the Friday numbers to their advantage in the last few days of the campaign.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said the October jobs report shows an unemployment number that is still much higher than what Obama promised after signing the stimulus bill into law in 2009.

"The consequences of failed 'stimulus'-style spending, excessive regulations, and the threat of tax hikes are all around us: record debt, higher gas prices, stagnant wages, and an economy that's far weaker than it should be," Boehner said.

Democrats praised the Friday report for marking the 32nd consecutive month of private-sector job growth, saying that streak is a sign that the stimulus bill did help and that the economy is slowly improving. House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) and other Democrats said Republican opposition to additional jobs bills has prevented greater job growth.

"House Democrats' Make It In America jobs plan, which focuses on revitalizing our manufacturing sector and helping businesses expand and add jobs, is exactly the kind of plan America needs," Hoyer said. "However, Republicans in Congress continue to obstruct, delay, and ignore the challenge of job creation for the sake of short-term political gain."

Rep. Charles Rangel (D-N.Y.), a senior Democrat on the House Ways and Means Committee, said the numbers show the president's jobs plan is working.

"Now is not the time to turn back," Rangel said. "It is important that we work together to implement policies that continue to strengthen the middle class and move our country forward."

Unfortunately, a great many people receiving public assistance are lying and cheating the system among the other crimes they commit.
Gov Rick Scott of Florida has taken a lot of shit for instituting a drug testing policy for those on cash assistance but I for one think it should be mandatory nationwide.
I've seen too much abuse of the system. Criminals collecting our tax dollars...

In Maine's Acadia National Park, bicyclists ride along carriage roads that are closed to motorized vehicles.

WPA lined these roads with the blocks of granite for miles. They could start here http://www.awwa.org/files/GovtPublic...pleteFinal.pdf as long as no workers were being replaced and they earned a fair wage. GSA Offers 30 Federal Buildings for Deep Energy Retrofits etc etc.... If it were focused on things that would save money down the road it'd be win win. Better than getting nothing for all those dollars dished out to able bodied people in areas with no regular jobs. And people that didn't like this deal better find work locally, sign up for WPA, or forfeit benefits.

there is nothing that can be done, there are no magic beans to fix a handful of problems that have existed for decades.

Americans are shooting their own self in the foot by not unionizing, the FED has even been putting pro-union literature on it's website for years but nobody goes to that site and politicians certainly aren't going to bring it up. but even the effects of increased unionization rates would take years to have any real effect on the economy. the low unionization rate in the US has the most effect on the low wage RTW states since high levels of labor union participation brings up wages for all, both union and non-union.

not every problem has a realistic solution, that's just the way life is. so even the left doing "nothing" as you say is better than the policy of the right which only further increases inequality making the economy worst in the long run and the occurrence of overvalued assets bubble/burst cycles more likely.

from post WWII to the 80's when inequality in the US was more equal (but far from being equal) there were high interest rates for ALL and no recessions. when ECONOMIC policy of the 80's and monetary policy out of the FED reversed the effects of the progressive era there have been low interest rates for ALL and numerous recessions, each one being worst than the last.
