Gr81 has something on his mind!

I don't know where to post this so I figured that I can't go wrong with the open chat, I would like to get opinions on this b/c this is something that is bothering me. Now I am by no means the biggest man you will see, but I am an extremely dedicated young bodybuilder and am a true student of the game. It seems like I spend more time trying to learn about the science of the sport than I do training. I truly love the sport for everything that it offers as I'm sure many of you guys do. With that being said, I am also very insecure about my physique, which in alot of ways is a good trait for a BB to have b/c I won't be able to settle with what I have accomplished, It will keep me working hard to get bigger. Despite what some people on here would have you think, I am actually a very modest person in real life b/c I am a perfectionist and no matter how big I get , it will never be big enough. So to get to my point, I have been to a few BB shows in the last year including the Emerald Cup in Wa, which is supposed to be the biggest show in the northwest. I was extremely dissapointed with the quality of the athletes on stage. I went into it expecting to see some quality physiques, I am aware that these are just amateur shows and I am not expecting Pro level physiques to be there, but god damn, I saw two guys in the whole show that looked like they belong on stage. One guy I saw that was competing in the super heavy div. was fat, I mean he was at like 25% BF i swear to god. He had a horrible physique, and had no busines being on stage. Another competitor asked me to put posing oil on his back, and I look at his oil to see that it was motor oil! This same competitor wore jean shorts that were cut up on stage, he didn't even have posing trunks! My point is that I feel like bodybuilding was a much better sport when it was less common, when it had a cult following. Nowadays everybody jumps on stage and calls themselves a BB, big deal. Most of these people didn't even look like they knew how to get cut, WTF. It is great that these people are weight training and are pursuing an active lifestyle but getting yourself onstage should be a way of rewarding yourself for the hard work and long time you have put in, time you have spent prioritizing weak points and developing a symmetrical, asthetically pleasing physique to represent that you have accomplished something. Realisticaly anyone can string together a few years of training, but it is truly an accomplishment to put ten years under your belt and perfect your body. I know that not everyone will be as dedicated as me, but I really feel that most of these shows are just a mockery of the sport. No other sport is like this, if you can't put the ball in the hoop then you won't play, if you can't throw a strike then you won't pitch, but with BB it is so impartial. There aren't even any rules or guidlines. It is too bad b/c for a long time my driving force was that I wanted to hop on stage by this time, but now my thinking is that I don't to be associated with any of these clowns on stage. I am not taking anything away from the people that have accomplished things and have made great strides, that's awesome. Also another reason that I love the sport is b/c I am very competetive and this allows me to still be an athlete, but the attitude at these competitions is like everyone is a winner, if you got up there you are so brave and that deserves recocnition. Whatever happened to telling someone that they DON'T look great and they NEED to go back in the gym and work on something to be a better BB. I hate this attitude. If I look like shit and I came in soft and flat, that is what I want to hear, not, "oh you look great, congrats". Where is the competitive nature in that? It is too bad that things are this way and not more serious. Bodybuilding is dead. I know that there are some serious athletes out there but all I seem to see are clowns and drug abusers calling themselves BB. Just because you have been on drugs for 3 years doesn't make you an accomplished BB, and just cause you used to be fat and now you have some muscle tone doesn't make you a BB, where are all the real athletes and T-man and T-vixens at? You must be out there somewhere. Is anyone feeling me?

I've never heard of some of the things you've just mentioned even back in my hay day. motor oil? Posing jean cutoff shorts? You couldn't go on stage with such attire, at least no shows I was part of. The one thing I can say is this,, your competing for you so just look at the jabronies as stepping stones for you to reach your goal. I can promise you that after you win a few of these circus shows the compitiion gets much better. You should enter these shows regardless and get some experience in posing and stage presence etc. Then after a few wins you will qualify for Jr. Nationals and then National qualifiers etc. When you get there,, believe me you will see guys with your same desire and determination to win. So to repeat myself just for my sheer pleasure, these suto bodybuilders will make you look like Arnold up on stage. Take it while you can get it cause like I said when you move up with the big boys, very little seperates the winners from the loosers.

270 pounds, 10% bodyfat, national competitor never over 1.2g - your using too much man, it wont promote faster gains, period.

Yes, we spend more time learning/studying and eating than being actually in the gym.

I have one question: What show was this and by which organization?

All I go to locally are NPC sanctioned shows, and for the most part the competitors are quality, and as far as jean shorts, that would not be allowed.

but I do agree with the majority of what you said, except I do not think that bb is dead, it's bigger now than 10 years ago, 20 years ago, etc. It will always be a subjective sport. However, it would be nice if there were some type of "qualifing round" where the judges say you can or cannot compete. That will never happen though because it's a business and the more competitors that enter, the more money for the organization that is holding the show.

My advice to you is go to a national level show, like the Junior USA. In these shows you have to qualify to get in by winning your weight division at a state level show. So, you will never see any competitors that should not be on stage.

Good post there big guy. I dunno about one thing though,, bodybuilding being bigger now then 10 years ago. Body building was pretty damn big in the 80's and 90's throughout! It used to even be on ABC or CBS. I'll say that "fitness in general" is bigger now then ever before!!!! But bodybuilding in Jersery and PA was actually more popular in the 80's then it is now. We also had some big names in the sport back then. Maybe its a Jersey thing. We may be backwards. hahahahaha

    ya think?

hmmm...maybe it seems this way cause fitness has grown so much the last 2 decades. in fact, the damn bodybuilding shows seem like a side event now compared to the figure and fitness!!!

one thing I have noticed is there used to be a show on ESPN, I think it was American Muscle, can't remember, but it was a cool show that covered local bodybuilding, and some other stuff, it used to be on at odd times, like 1am, but I used look thru the T.V. guide to find it and I would usually record it.

not sure what happened to that show.

Yeaaa See my point? You just proved everything I just said Prince. Fitness and health has sky rocketed and BBing has taken a back seat. I also remember that show American Muscle. THAT SHOW ROCKED!!!! I MISS IT. ESPN (thank god) still airs contests from time to time. So there ya have it, 80's it was ALL bodybuilding and even a remake of Pumping Iron but with women. Anymore,, it just doesn't seem the same to me.

The guy with the jean shorts wasn't actually let on stage, it was the fact that thats what he was wearing to a comp. That was the 2002 Evergreen State in WA. the Emerald Cup in WA had the super heavy that was fat. I know that I can't expect too much from an amatuer show, it would be stupid to. Just those experiences have made me think twice about competing. I don't think I want to get on stage for like ten more years, just so it is absolutely clear that I am bigger and more dedicated than these people. It really isn't as big of a deal as I have made it out to be I'm sure, It just bothers me. It is just a shame that BB is such a subjective sport. Lately my interest has been turning more towards powerlifting just b/c of how manly a sport it is. It isn't who is holding less water or came in bloated or missed their peak, it is straight can you lift this weight or not. I know BB isn't dead, as long as their are people who love the sport. Whenever things go more mainstream then something is lost though. I wish I was alive in the 70s when BB was more of an underground thing instead of the hippest new fad. Whatsup with the hardcore lifter gyms with platforms to deadlift and squat on and syringes in the bathroom, whatsup with the 100lb plates, whatsup with the chains and other such training devices. Instead I train at 24 hr fitnes where I am kicked out for deadlifting b/c I am making people uncomfortable. It is just frustating that there are so many clowns surrounding the sport in all aspects. It is liable to suck the T-levels right out of your workout. I stay strong though, that is why I am here bitching to you guys. Thanks for taking the time to read and listen to my BS, I appreciate it fellas. I know all the real T-men can feel me.

Kicked out for deadlifting LoL, I heard another story similar. Some guy was working out at a gym that was more of a "club" for older people, and was asked to leave.

Yep, same down here, pickup joint. I was a member last year, and I could only go between 12am-7am if I didn't want to wait forever for equipment, it sucked. I am glad to be out of there.
