Very Cool!
I was looking at TREK bikes the other day for a new mountain bike. Any thoughts?

This brings my number of bikes to three (two mountain bikes, one road bike). CARDIO, anyone?![]()

Trek makes excellent mountain bikes. You really can not go wrong with one. My personal favorite is their Trek Fuel 100 mountain bike, but the $4400 price tag is a bit much.![]()
I was loooking more in the $400.00 range

Not many companies make good $400 bikes that can be taken off road, but Trek is one of them.Specialized is another.

$500 can get you an ok MTB IMO, I wonder how often people break the cranks though having real fun on them. My dad has what was once an expensive Peugot bike, not an MTB of course.

Lots of parts will break if you get crazy on an inexpensive bike. If I took a Wal-Mart bike on one of my MTB rides, chances are pretty good that I would break the frame in half. That is, of course, if the wheels, handlebar, seatpost, etc lasted long enough.Originally posted by Mudge

I bought my mtn bike from Wal-Mart!
It's a Mongoose, but the components are pretty cheap, I just use it for "family bike rides".

For leisurely family rides, those bikes are just fine.Originally posted by Prince

Ususally a Walmart or Canadian Tire bike will have a
little WARNING sticker, cautioning you NOT to ride these bikes HARD on the trails!!!The other thing is,would you get a plumber to put your bike together???
I have seen many bikes coming outta of Canadian Tire store,
IMPROPERLY put together.
It's always better to get a bike from a bike shop, they have trained mecanics who do this for a living!!!
B'boon,nice ride!!!![]()

Have you done a century yet???

The Mongoose that I bought came pre-assembled in a box from the manufacturer, except for the front wheel and the handle bar, which took me about 5 minutes to put on.
Prince,if you're happy with it,that is what really counts!!!

Yes,Mongoose are good city bikes, solid frames, but like IAB said,
let me ride it on the trails and I'll come back walking, with the bike on my back!!!
Trail riding is very hard on bikes,I've seen a friend take a spill once and he totalled his bike,it was done over a rooty trail and I've taken worst spill then that one ,it's just the way you fall sometimes.
Usually, when you pay good money for a bike,it has a lifetime warranty on the frame(never buy an aluminium frame w/o a warranty on it)so if there is a defect(a hairline fisure or a bad weld)and you trash it, you get a new frame (and some bruises also, you get to keep those...)

It looks muddy and wet. It would have been hard as hell to watch while standing on slippery, muddy rocks.

We've ridden together on the road a few times....her on her road bike, me on the MTB. I didn't like it because I could not keep up. She'd be riding along at a mellow, easy pace, and I'd be killing myself to keep up. The MTB can go just so fast with knobby tires and only two small rings.

My MTB had near slicks on it, awesome street cornering. I think they were 2.25" wide, they had a wierd lip on them too, really awesome street tires.

oooohhh ... I've been wanting a road bike ... I still need to recover from the initial MTB expenses ...
Be sure to tell us how you like it! I'd imagine it's very different ...
IAB, which TREK model is that one? I have an older TREK 1000 that I dearly love to ride (when I get the chance). Have entertained the thought of getting another one.
