Yeah, having lived in FL all my life and previously on a large tract of land near wetlands I can relate to this personally. For people living adjacent to wetlands and estuaries it’s not at all uncommon to have a gator crawl into the pool during mating season. I use to have to have my wife stand on the bank with a rifle to guard me when I waded into our lake to clean up the cattails and reeds. But mostly they are pretty shy and will flee when they see you – as long as you don’t feed them. I thought I had left this all behind me when I moved to my beachfront property. But, to my amazement I recently saw a huge 12 footer swimming in the surf just beyond a popular inlet to an inter-coastal waterway drains into the ocean. They are everywhere now – waterskiing is even taking on new dimensions of thrill (no one wants to fall and be left alone too long).
