    B-day #45

While NASA's official birthday is recognized as Oct. 1, 1958,
every member of the NASA family should pause to recognize an
important milestone in the creation of this historic agency.
Forty-five years ago this week, the 34th President of the United
States, Dwight Eisenhower, signed into law the "National
Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958," (Public Law 85-568).

This act established the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration. Less than a month later, President Eisenhower
would administer the oath of office to NASA's first
Administrator, T. Keith Glennan, and the agency's Deputy
Administrator Hugh L. Dryden, who had been serving as the
Director of NASA's predecessor, the National Advisory Committee
    for Aeronautics, or NACA.

For 45 years the people of NASA have dedicated their lives and
efforts in pursuit of the original mandate that "activities in
space should be devoted to peaceful purposes for the benefit of
    all mankind."

Additional information about the history of NASA is available on
    the Internet at: http://history.nasa.gov

I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but I think NASA is a massive waste of money that could be toherwise well spent. The economy is falling apart and we absolutely HAVE TO HAVE that rock from mars? I believe the only justified use of this equipment would be to find things that could collide with our planet, like comets and asteroids. We lose like 2 Billion everytime one of those shuttles blows up. Sad.

So many new technologies have come out of space science that it's well worth it. Imagine a world without Satellite broadcasting or cellular phones.

Our economy isn't anywhere near 'falling apart'.

Your opinion seems uneducated and unfounded. Where exactly would you rather the money go?

Many people don't realize how much technology NASA develops... from foam people use in pillows to new plastics used in heart valve replacements to infrared cameras aiding the preservation of the Star Spangled Banner from the War of 1812 to VELCRO!

You seem pretty smart RC, just try to do your own research on subjects from now on so that you can form your own educated opinion instead of going by what other people say and what you sound-bites you might hear on TV. That way you'll have facts to back up your position and they won't seem so empty and unfounded.

I don't know, starving kids, cancer research, military, homeless shelters. They should be trying to solve real problems with that money rather than taking ant farms into space to see what happens then. And BF, I don't really care if the piece of paper the star spangled banner was written on is destroyed or not. There's a million copies, what difference does it make?

They ARE solving real problems with space research.

Albeit hackneyed, do I have to go to the CC example? There were problems in Spain, when they sent Columbus out on his 'insane' journey. They could have spent the money to feed the homeless, or starving children, etc. But where would you be today?

    Gotta break some eggs...

However, there is a big difference between 'finding a pattern', and wisdom.

That's all huh? Seems kind of low from my perspective

Besides, since when does an IQ level give you knowledge, education and understanding of the world... right! It doesn't. The old adage of with age comes wisdom is truer then you'd think.
It seem that teenages thru the traditional college age years makes kids think they know it all... then when you get into your late 20's and up you realize how much is still out there to learn!

Someday you'll figure this out... I hope!

The numbers themselves vary from scale to scale, but on this one they rated me as a genius, top one percent of people my age. And as for people my age thinking they know everything, I'm out of that phase. I don't know everything, I just know more than almost anyone else my age, probably why I can stand to be around very few of them.

Did your parents have you tested?

My dad and his brothers & sisters were tested when they were young and my dad's IQ was in the 200's which from what I've been told is "off the scales"

My parents never wanted us tested... said it put too much pressure on the kids and they wanted us to grow up and fulfill our potential without any additional pressures.

I know my son's IQ but I won't tell him til he's older. No need for him to get all cocky cause he's smarter then the average person.

How is it you came to know your's???

Well, my whole life teachers always bitched that I was to smart to be not studying and not caring about grades. But in 8th grade when they make everyone take the standardized tests they had a main one and the the Ottis Lennon. The Ottis Lennon is one with shapes and every other kind of pattern and what not you find on an IQ test. There were 72 questions and a set time. I got every answer right and finished early. When I got the test back it said I scored in the top 1% of people my age. And then freshman year my football coach started calling me Mr. 137. He always said shit like "You're the smartest person out here, you have learned your plays by now." And then recently I did one of the online ones and it said I was a 142, which was genius level supposedly. I wish I was average though. I hate school, and all my teachers trying to teach me something I understood five years ago. If it weren't for football I would have probably just dropped out. I get like a 3.0 average and they bitch my ear off about how if I put in any effort at all I could easily be a straight A student. But it's not like I could pay for a big private university, so I'm happy just going to the local public state school. Idiots. I'd give it all up if I could play pro football.

Ever thought about making the straight A's to get an academic scholarship??? You might even get a football one too and then you'd be totally set!!!

I bet you hate school so much cause you are so bored all the time. My dad was bored in school too! Don't they have GT/advanced classes you could take that might challenge you more? Then you could take AP classes to get college credit! That's what my youngest bro did. By the time he went to Baylor, he already had 18hrs of college credit!

I have honors college algebra but it's not for college credit. I wanted to take honors history, but since the damn school is so underfunded, theres only honors history one hour and it conflicts with rest of my schedule, so I can't get into it. And my english teacher hated me so even though I got straight B's in honors english last year, and requested honors again, I didn't get it. I highly doubt they'd give me a college scholarship due to my long record of behavior problems there, and since none of the teachers would give me any kind of recomendation. You can take classes at the local community college senior year for the school, but you have to pay regular tuition price for the college too to get any credit from them. I wish my damn parents would pull me out of the gay private school and put me with my actual friends, instead of a bunch of stuck up rich punks.
