I have a suv(Ford Explorer) a truck(f150 4wd) and a Cadallic. The suv's are great for room, especially with kids when on a trip. But they do ride rougher than a car. So it really depends on if you want the room, need a suv for ground clearance or 4wd or if you want a smooth riding car?

haha, maybe that's why they're driving Volvos, the safest cars in the world!

Lina, I can also recommend Volvo V70, we've had different models of those for years! Very roomy and good for kids

I've had Jeeps for the last 10 years, get a grand cherokee, great car. Don't worry about all the negative stuff with SUV's. The people who complain about them have too much free time on their hands.

I love my SUV. Just upgraded to a Suburban from a Tahoe. The cool thing is, it weighs more than 6000 lbs, so I can write it off 100% this year (bought it through the company.)

That is a "loop hole" I suspect they will close one day.

As a past owner of 2 Explorers and an Expedition, I will say they are completely worthless unless they are used often for what they are designed for. Unless you intend to tow a camper, boat, or other trailer, don't waste your money on one to buy it or put A LOT of gas in it. They totally suck for families. Not enough room in them to make long trips comfortable. Ingress into the 3rd row is very difficult even for an adult. It is very difficult for young kids (I know this from experience). The crossover SUVs like the XC90, Murano, and the new Chrysler are a bit different since they are more car-like. I've driven trucks/SUVs for over 16 years and I've owned my last one.

I completely disagree with this. My Suburban is OUTSTANDING for taking the family on trips. It is even very nice to load the car with co-workers for lunch.

My wife, who hated SUVs, is actually trying to talk me into letting her take mine b/c it works so well with the kids. It works much better than the Town & Country she has now.

I remember reading about that Expedition and how it gets 8 MPG! Can't imagine having to fill that tank on a regular basis. I'm personally looking at small SUV's (Escape, Tribute, RAV4, etc.) because I think they're a lot more functional than your standard car.

I second that! I just traded in my Jeep Grand Cherokee for a Jeep Liberty. I love it!

Jeep Rocks and nobody has built SUV's longer

I think we will definitely go with the SUV Volvo because of this but we don't know for sure if the Volvo qualifies. It is not on the list of vehicles over 6000 lbs, but the list does not take into account that, after adding the 3rd row and the larger engine we will get to a little over 6000 lbs.

The only thing that's outstanding about Suburbans is you beside the gas pump watching the total hit $40+.

We traded our Expy in on a '04 Sienna. This van gets 28+mpg and has a TON more room than the Expy or Excursion ever thought of.

I do have to say that our Dodge Grand Caravan has way more room in it then the SUVs I've been in and it has been a great cost saver when we need to move things. Gas mileage is good too like 28mpg.

I like sports cars, but if you need to cargo haul find something that gets the job done. If 85% of the vehicles floor space is covered with seats and you are only a couple and not a huge family, then look at something else.

The automatic trannies in those cars have a bad reputation, and for 4x4'ing it is not the vehicle of choice, as the rear end is a lower control arm setup which basically says CAR not 4x4.

Fords biggest blunder was underinflating the tires on thier "Exploders."

You're right about the trannys. In fact, all DC products have tranny problems. As for the independent rear suspension, that can be an advantage in 4x4.

I'm going to check out the Volvo Cross Country wagon when I finally decide to buy a new car (maybe a year or so). I need a car wiht a lot of room to carry all my toys.

I don't think people in the U.S. consider Volvo drivers geeks. Snobs maybe, but not geeks.

We own an SUV (Ford Exlporer) and a non-SUV (Acura Integra). They both serve their own purposes in our household. Seems to me that non-SUV owners only get bitchy because they can not afford one.
